Pressure Cooker Explosion - Lid Opening Under Pressure

  • A test we conducted on a stovetop pressure cooker as part of the investigation on a case where we were trying to help a little girl that was terribly hurt. You can read more about the case and the result here: flarecord.com/...
    In this test we bring the pressure cooker up to operating pressure then slowly release the pressure simulating a side vent release. At 3 PSI a pneumatic arm activates and opens the lid. The lid is not supposed to EVER open under pressure. If you're short on time jump to approx 55 seconds in.

    • @MrRolandOchoa
      @MrRolandOchoa  2 года назад +14

      So glad to hear she only had mild injuries. Pressure cookers are not supposed to open when there is pressure. But many still do. And even a small amount of pressure can send the hot contents flying. Be careful with pressure cookers. Or better still…find another way to cook.

      Pressure cookers should be designed so that it's impossible to open when on full pressure. I have one and you have to press the lid on first then turn the lid around like 10cm, there are these cogwheel like extensions on the outside and on the lid too and you have to turn the lid until these extensions overlap and then the lid is secured. When it's on full pressure it's impossible to turn the lid and open it due to the huge force pressing against these extensions.

  • @zakzwijn8410

    How is this even possible? Pressure cookers should be designed so that it's impossible to open when on full pressure. I have one and you have to press the lid on first then turn the lid around like 10cm, there are these cogwheel like extensions on the outside and on the lid too and you have to turn the lid until these extensions overlap and then the lid is secured. I have mycology as a hobby and use it to sterilize grain spawn jars, when done sterilizing I open the pressure release valve and the steam escapes violently via a small tube. When no more steam escapes, it's safe to open.

    • @MrRolandOchoa
      @MrRolandOchoa  3 года назад +3

      You are right, when its on full pressure it can't open due to the friction between the lid and the pot flanges. But when the pressure begins to drop there comes a point when it can open. For this particular model that pressure is 3psi. This experiment trys to open the pot when it reaches 3psi. Because this one has a defective locking mechanism it can open.

    I have an instant pot the lid twist which which secures it and when it is pressure cooking it automatically locks the lid where when the float valve rises The thicker part of the bottom valve automatically pushes out the locking mechanism where the lid cannot be turned which keeps the lid on a track and it cannot be pulled off until it’s twisted counterclockwise which that locking mechanism stops that from happening when float valve is raised up hearing pressure mode. However people need to be careful when they buy some of the stuff on Certain web sites and you see it really cheap because some research has shown with anything there are counterfeit items and you want something that is going to be sturdy and actually made by Annie manufacturer who makes the product which is laboratory tested. Sometimes people make a mistake to try to pick one up and move it while it’s cooking as I said mine has a locking mechanism but if that mechanism for some reason was to fail and you accidentally twisted or drop it while you’re moving it ain’t no telling what could happen. With that being said I’ve never had an issue with mine it’s pretty safe.

    • @MrRolandOchoa
      @MrRolandOchoa  Год назад +2

      Good points. You can't always trust the lock. Also keep in mind when they "test" these they don't test every one. Just a few samples at the beginning of production. That means, in effect, you are the one testing the one you buy. Be careful with pressure cookers!

      Most of the pressure cooker accidents happened in the same way. I have met some people during social work project who sustained burn injuries after they tried to open a pressurized cooker. Unfortunately there's no safety mechanism used in locally manufactured pressure cookers in poor countries which can prevent a cooker from opening which is still pressurized.

Don't opening a hot pressure wessel is just common sense as "don't eat the glass" "don't stub yourself in the heart with the knife". You can blame it on the company, but then you can blame everything on some company. "Oh I killed someone while tryin to rob a bank? Blame it on the knife maker because it lacked safity stickers." Wow. Be careful. What my experiments showed me was that at full pressure most are very hard to open because of the friction on the locking lugs (tabs on the side of lid and pot) but as the pressure drops there is a point where you can open it. The only thing that stops you is the lock. If the lock is faulty or not there like in some models then it can open. Play it safe.... use a microwave. ;)
