What a great video. At first I was put off by the “super fast” idea since I feel YT videos often give the impression that art should not take long and then new artists (like me) have anxiety, but this video was perfect because it provided amazing tips and advice and encouragement for busy new artists (like me) to feel like they can accomplish a month long art challenge like Inktober. Thanks so much! Also you are so talented! Thanks for sharing and inspiring!
This is the most useful guide to a successful Inktober that I have seen. You inspired me to try one drawing per day. All in one day was a bit too much! 😄. ☮️💙🙏
I'll admit - it was a long day doing all 31 prompts at once. I'm glad you found it inspiring and enjoyed the tips. All the best with your Inktober this year!
Wow! If those are your quick drawings your other ones must be absolutely amazing. I only took drawing back up 6 weeks ago, I hadn’t drawn since I was a teenager (about 40 years ago) and also started water colouring 7 weeks ago, it was the water colouring that reminded me I used to love drawing.
Excellent! Thanks. I tend to do small doodles and sometimes combine them. Like you, I just want to participate, not stress about it. It's a fun filled challenge for yourself not a competition. Very helpful. Thanks again.👍
Impressive! Thanks for your perspective! As a beginner, I struggle a bit more than talented folks. I loved your suggestion of just focusing on one aspect of an object (such as the violin) and will definitely apply this in my attempts. My eye is attracted to simplicity and I loved everything you did. While I won't be trying to do it as fast as you did, I will try to time myself to reduce my struggling time and see what happens!
This is a BEAUTIFUL video!!! These tips are going to be so useful, and your art is absolutely stunning!! Not to mention THE OUTDOOR VEIWS!!!!! what I’d give to live somewhere like that, gorgeous!!!!! ❤❤❤❤ congrats on finishing all the prompts!!!!! 🎉🎉
This is super cool! For as many times as I've attempted inktober (5, or 6, maybe), I've never really looked at the Internet and how everyone else does it vs just keeping up with a few friends who have way more time than me! 😅 I think I'm going to try things a little bit differently this year 😊
Thanks for this idea. It reminds me of Michigan character and mural artist Ten Hundred's three episodes of Fiverr art gigs. He aimed for 15 mins per piece and compiled the results into a series of coloring books. My source is 15 images from a Colorado camping trip years ago. I'll probably fold some sketch paper into a booklet to keep the size manageable, maybe add a ribbon tie when it's done. Excellent tip about leaving the image incomplete, allowing the viewer to finish the work in their mind, and preserving the artist's time, energy, physical abilities and motivation to complete the challenge. I've seen the unfinished technique used in prized portraits of the wealthy and powerful and Western landscapes. It definitely grabs the viewer's attention. I look forward to watching more of your work. 💖
Lots of cool ideas. I'm rolling with my first break at work using my .005 micron, 2nd break 5.0 for line work, and maybe brush pens for final fill or watercolor if I'm inspired. That way I can limit to mostly 15-30 minutes a day.
I think I already mentioned it, but I took plenty of inspiration already from your blog and your process here. I've never done this type of challenge before. I'm doing mine on 3x2.5 inch bristol artist trading cards made by strathmore, so I didn't have to cut them, and I can stick them in little gaming card sleeves to preserve them, but I think it was a great idea to do them nice and small, allowing for maximum focus on details in a small area. I've done pencils for eight of the prompts, and aim to have all 31 of them penciled by the time October starts so I can focus on carefully ink rendering and detail in a variety of styles, with a variety of tools. I don't especially like the set of official prompts, but I actually like that I don't like it--it's going to cause me to draw a variety of subjects I might otherwise not have drawn. That said, I've already interpreted plenty of them obliquely, and I did a portrait of Captair Kirk for the "Trek" prompt. I bet we will see a great deal of Star Trek drawings for that prompt this year! :) Thanks again for all the great videos. I'll be reviewing your recent grass video today as I gear up to draw a grassy foreground.
So awesome! I kept saying, "Ohhh I like that the best." And then your next drawing would appear and I would say it again lol. Great drawings and great tips.
@@longstrideillustrationYeah I bet lol. I have had it in my head that I want to do a stippling piece but I know how much that entails so I'm like hmmm lol.
great tutorial! in your next tutorial, do you think you could teach us how to draw clouds? i have trouble how some pen and ink artists draw clouds. a lot of them dont include them in their landscapes but i think that if clouds are in landscapes they can improve a piece greatly. thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion. Clouds are challenging, likely why most of us avoid including them in our projects. More the reason to practice ... I will 100% do a cloud tutorial.
if you are not an established artist / you are still learning to draw / you think you have room to improve, don't bother trying to do all 31 prompts in a day. you might as well be drawing 31 stick figures in 1 hour. nobody's gonna care, and you won't be learning anything out of it. the aim of doing 31 days is to balance between challenging and finishing. doing this balancing act for 31 days straight will yield rewards from a lot of areas, not only having mediocre artworks laying around.
my thoughts exactly. the point is to do something every day. improve skills. establish discipline... doing it all in one day defeats the purpose and the spirit of the exercise / challenge.
@@sharonolsen6579 Last year, when I saw that Kelsey had done the challenge in 1-day, I had the same reaction that you did. This year my circumstances are different, and it suddenly became a less ridiculous option. Maybe some day in a future Inktober, you'll recall this video and find it more appealing then ;)

I really enjoy going through your videos, and I am picking up some very useful tips. Thank you. But I think your misinterpreting inktober. Doing the prep and planning is a great idea, but predoing drawings or doing batches in one day is wrong. The challenge is complete a drawing everyday. That means sit down and draw a picture everyday. You don't need to follow the guidelines posted either. They originally were meant as a guide not a requirement, just to help in a dry spell or block. Elaborate composition is not necessary, it you draw a cup you don't need the saucer and spoon or the donuts if your time constricted. The challenge.... It's a challenge to you as an artist, not to anyone else, your not in any competition. I've have completed inktober challenges and never posted a drawing online. I think your doing a great job, wish you well, and look forward to seeing more of your work.
Glad that you're enjoying the videos, and thanks for sharing your perspective. My thoughts on that are that: Whether in art or life, with goals the first step to a challenge - is to be clear on your reasons for wanting to complete it. Sounds like you are clear on why you’re participating in Inktober. Other approaches are not ‘wrong’ they are just different goals than yours. Art challenges offer guidelines for individuals who want to participate as well as grow skills - the path to get there will be as unique as each of us.

Hi! If you're new to my channel, welcome. I draw every day, as full time artist. I've taken different approaches to Inktober in the past. This year, my October month is full-booked with other projects, but I still wanted to participate in the ink challenge. I saw that Kasey Golden did her Inktober in One Day, and wanted to try it too. The key takeaway of this video is that it's possible and an option if that fits your goals. Cheers
