Union Pacific 1989 Pulls Heavy MNYRO on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision

- In this shot, we see Union Pacific 1989 and seven other units drag a heavy MNYRO up the steep grades near Coal Creek, CO on the UP Moffat Tunnel Subdivision. Union Pacific 1989 is the Denver & Rio Grande Western heritage unit, which is very appropriate for this area, being it was the old D&RGW line. This area between Tunnel 1 and Clay has a very steep grade so westbound trains, like the MNYRO, have to work hard to bring heavy trains through. I had to wait a long time to get this shot as the MNYRO got caught behind some MOW workers and had to wait at Arvada for about 2 hours. I also had to climb a very steep hill, which also had barbed wire... So my efforts were large in order to get this shot. I hope you enjoy!

Your hike yielded a very Unique photo location. I lived in Colorado for many years and seen countless photos and videos, but never this perspective. Good work!
That must've been a bit of a hike to get it. Good to see some more from the Moffat, very nice!
Great job, Jake from an appreciative railfan in Orlando Florida.
That was hard core! The last 4 units there in the head end must only have been a part of a power move. Very nice video man.
@cagorrie Yeah my guess was this was also a power move to Grand Junction. Those units would probably be set out there but they could also serve as back up units as needed.
Fabulous scenery! nice UP1989!
and pulling 93 cars(+DPU), for if they want to tell.
Well worth the effort! I hope the cuts from the barbed wire have healed. My friend and I shot some video near Coal Creek Canyon in 2010 but we stayed down near the fire station (Blue Mountain Road?). CO is terrific. We try to get over your side of the ocean every second year. We are aiming to get to UT, ID, MT and WY this year.
AWESOME!!! Well done!!!
Well done, well worth the effort, were the rear units working, they sounded like the front 4 were but the other were at idle ???
Nice job, i would fire those last 4 up, and use the power.
I missed it too Benjamin
i missed it.
