I was stationed onboard the USS NASSAU LHA 4. I was a Mess Management Specialist (MS). I was one of the cooks, cooking for the crew and the Marine detachment. We also bake bread and rolls and cakes, make all types of salads, and make ice cream. Everybody ate well and we fed anybody that came onboard.
USS America (LHA-6) is comparable in size to the post-WWII rebuilds of the USS Essex (CV-9), a fleet aircraft carrier, and her several sister ships that were upgraded to the new angled flight deck configuration. The point is that these "amphibious assault ships" such as USS America have nearly as much aviation capacity as the U.S. Navy's former frontline aircraft carriers -- and the Navy currently has nine of these amphibious assault ships in active service, potentially providing a significant expansion of its aviation capacity, if needed, to supplement its current frontline fleet of 11 nuclear-powered super carriers. China has commissioned three aircraft carriers, but its navy is still going through significant operational growing pains as it learns how to use them. No other navy in the world has more than two frontline aircraft carriers in service.
Only LHA6/7 (USS America and USS Tripoli) have extended aircraft hangars in this class as purely aviation optimized ships. The rest have amphibious well-decks from LHA8 (USS Bougainville) and onwards.
Unfortunately, this is our only one of its kind the rest are going to be built with well decks me personally I think we need more of the small light carriers
The U.S. Navy needs a minimum of six (6) America Class "Lightning Carriers". These vessels are needed in the aircraft carrier rotation for less stressful areas where a full Carrier Strike Group capability with a full Carrier Air Wing is not needed. The unique and very capable F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter is what makes this possible. A minimum of twelve (12) F-35Bs should be on board for all deployments and more can be accomodated as required. The U.S. Navy should stand-up F-35B Squadrons and mix of Navy and USMC aircrew are used as mission requirements dictate. Presence is their primary mission, and providing Strike/Fighter support with F-35B unique qualities/capabilities make this possible. Rotary wing operations can support ASW and Sea Control missions as well. One DDG-51 and the new FFG-62s will be its battle group with a logistics ship to accompany.
didnt like the robot voice - the question of the video, the goal in life is to learn from your mistakes. So one can do better next time. Welcome to the US Navy. every bolt has a job to do. this ship is not different. It has a job to do, and it carries it out!.
As a recently retired RCAF F18 pilot/instructor I had the privilege of landing on this beast in its inaugural year of 2014 while on joint exercise. She may be the smallest, but to me she was easy to land on and was state of the art. Even a 4 inch penis is a formidable weapon when wielded by the right man and this ship is no exception. The USA has the biggest and best fleet in the world. #LoveThisBoat

I was on the USS Nassau 91-94

Yeah but you have to maintain that fleet

In 86, I was on the USS BELLEAU WOOD LHA 3. Was a great ship for a Marine to have his first float on.
It's awesome to hear from someone who shared that experience! The USS BELLEAU WOOD must have held some incredible memories for you.
My uncle piloted the F4 phantom in Vietnam, I was in awe as a 1960's kid. God bless all who served this great country.🇺🇸
Add to the weaponry, Cobra attack helicopters. Fast response for both attack and defense. A lethal combination of capabilities.
I was A proud member of the crew from 1972 until 1975 , worked in the aft cats 3&4. I was sad to see her go the way she did.
I think that they should make more LHD instead of LHA should replace the LHA with LCV.
Great presentation. Valuable asset.
It's not the best or most complete, but it gets the job done.
The Right Stuff to clear the present Danger ‼️🇺🇸🧬🦅🎢✅🎈
It houses a few of America's deadliest payload
Does the job assigned to it,nice ship

Incorrect. Tripoli has no well deck either. Bougainville onward will.
How about the
USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) lost in port.
There " was" an actual USS America aircraft carrier. But it now part of a series of the deepest ship wrecks! :(

20 knots? Essex class could do 33 knots and about the same size maybe the navy should go back to oil fire boilers lol
Hilll Fork
Amphibious Assault Ship not an aircraft carrier.
Well basically this is a aircraft carrier being that it holds more aircraft and don't have an well deck
It essentially is and aircraft carrier since it doesn't have a well deck

🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
It is NOT an aircraft carrier.
Don’t care what strike group you’re in… If crap hits fan with modern weapons….I would not want to be on ANY ship.
The USS America does not have a well deck but they changed the design after the first or second ship and they have well decks

Wow, what an incredible experience! It's always fascinating to hear from someone with firsthand knowledge of such impressive machinery.
