- This video is the second in a 3 part series to remove the transmission for a clutch replacement on a 1997 Honda Civic. Looks like the civic is similar for the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 model years - Sixth generation - EX, DX, LX, HX, CX, GX and Si. Transmission removal and replacement. This is part 2 in a series to complete the clutch replacement.
Excellent. Very well done and clear to the viewer.
You need to make more videos seriously this video is such a help
Ben hoover - I would love to, I just haven't had the time. thanks for watching.
Thanks to your wife an you, your video gave me an insight into what I was doing, replace my clutch an trans bearings every thing working great, thanks again an merry Christmas
@shapiff
Sorry to hear you have to work outside. Hope you have some decent weather while you are working. I used to have to work in the drive way. I would put a tarp up under the eves of the house and down to the car. Then I could work mostly dry. I need to get some time to finish the clutch wrap up video. But, the thing I worked the longest to figure out was how to get the pilot bearing out. It comes out the back of the flywheel, so take the flywheel off. Good luck, ask questions, anytime.
@shapiff
Thanks hope you have a great Thanksgiving as well. Looks like you are right on removing all the belts to get to the Alternator belt. My car has power steering and A/C so it has 3 belts. The first one to come off is the PS. I would probably just remove both bolts and pull it out of the way. Then, the appears to be a tensioner pully on the A/C belt. Looks like you loosen it with a 10mm socket. Once that belt is loose you will be able to get to the Alternator belt.
Glad I was able to help. Good luck
Do whatever makes you happy. I know the theory of pushing not pulling. But I will do it however I feel like on each bolt. I do have a lot of sockets: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and I actually have 3/4 inch set as well. Good luck with your car projects.
Sorry for the late reply. Either the clutch is not disengaging all the way or the synchros on the 3rd and 4th gears are bad. Maybe check that there is no air in the fluid line to the slave cylinder and that the little slave cylinder rod is in correctly.
@shapiff
Looks like the Alternator on the Civic only has 2 bolts. One is just through a hole and the other is in a slot to let you adjust the tension. You will have to loosen both bolts to move the Alternator. The new belt needs to be tight, but should have some flex.
Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions.
do you really have to do all that to replace the clutch?
Thanx Bugz your video was very well detailed and im getting ready to do it my self but i dont have the comfort of a garage and the weather sucks in upstate NY so wish me LUCK. P.S any tips will be very much appreciated so please check in with me i will be useing your videos and your wife did great with the camera....
i would happily take that bet :) as would almost any other Honda enthusiast. most of us can pull the engine and replace in under 6 hours as long as nothing goes wrong.
Thank you Gail!
Thanks for these vids bro, subscribed.
Your welcome. Glad you like it. Maybe sometime I will have time to create another. I don't have a civic anymore though, so not sure I can do a civic video.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family...
@gareygriffith
I am not really sure what would cause it to grind after a clutch change. It could be something like the clutch is not disengaging all the way. Otherwise the gears grind because the synchros are going bad or something bad like that. So, first check the master and slave cylinders and make sure the throwout gearing is engaging properly. Good luck.
how doo you remember where everything goes
that maybe true but havent had any work related yet from honda cars...some of the car that ive work with were with mazda and mitsu so yeah and the strut assembly from honda really eliminates some of time thats the diffrences between each cars if u just noticed it.
Hi nice Video, I have a Question: @6:00 you remove the Spring Pin under the Rubber Cover... Ok good. Can I use a normal Bolt and Nut? Its easyer to remove.... What do you think?
buy a tie rod/ ball joint separator (i call it a pickle fork)... you can buy them to fit in an air gun or one you can use by hand by simply lining up the "u" shaped slot with the ball joint and hitting the end of the pickle fork with a hammer with a little prying it should pop loose. you can buy them at local automotive stores like princess auto or if your in Canada you can rent one for free at Canadian tire.
Step one in making transmission removal video. Kick daddy and his grinder out of garage lol
@automotiveDIY Ah thank makes sense, Thanks for the information
the "vacuum" hose you took off that had water in it.... thats not a vacuum hose. thats a coolant bypass that goes between the intake manifold and the water runner on the back.
Impractical.
If I do it myself, I would need to buy the two lifting instruments similar to what you have (it will cost me maybe $300 each) plus other stuff like what you have ($500), plus the costly clutch kit ($300 plus), that is already $1100! Then, I forgot to reassemble what I disassembled! Darn! I will need to hire someone to reassemble it (being not sure if I replaced the clutch right), that will cost me $500 labor. Should I go on doing it myself? Any ideas?
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family...I I have a question,, my alternator belt split and I wanna put a new one on but it looks like it goes on before the other belts and im wandering how to do so, I know I can do this but some words of wisdom would help,,,please/
that looks like alot of work!!
Hey Mr. Wyndham i have a question.I noticed in part two of your transmission removal video about 2:00 in you banged the ball joint with a hammer to release the stud you only banged it about 3-5 times and it came out whenever i do that with my car and try to pull it apart it doesn't even move. I have a 93 Honda civic ex. What do you suggest i do ?
You rock, thanks for the info..
if you've done it before you can do the whole job fairly quickly. my best time is just under 2 hours start to finish.
2 hours is easy to do it. half the stuff here he shows you you dont have to do..
you only have to remove the passenger side balljoint from the LCA, because the transmission slides to the passenger side, thus you can take the drivers side axle out. (saves 10-15 minutes) i disconnect the shift linkage from the shifter instead of the pin (saves 5-10 minutes)
and i do everything with impacts and air ratchets. that saves a LOT of time.
thanks for the tutorial. approximately how long it takes to not have professional tools, and could be done with simple ramps??
someone whos done it a lot with tools, 3 hours, someone whos never done it without air tools, 4-6 hours if nothing goes wrong 8-96 hours if you break bolts and have to extract and wait for another set
That should probably work just fine. ** No promises, since I have not tried it. Make sure you have a locking nut so that it doesn't come appart.
I'm trying to watch this, but there's a grinder in the background? You added music but didn't just dub the voice?
you need some gear wrenches . Why did you drain the oil for???
+PullTab Fever - - gear wrenches would be nice, but I never seem to breakdown and get them. I didn't drain the motor oil, but I did let the oil out of the tranny so that it would not leak all over the place when the axle shafts were out.
k. thought you drained motor oil. lol. i looked at it wrong. :)
I'm so nervous about unlocking a bolt I don't have to unlock.
Why did you had to drain the Transmission Fluid?
When you take the drive shafts out all the fluid would come out of the holes any time you tip the tranny. Drain the fluid so you can control the mess.
@Build It Garage thank you for the answer. I already thought that because nothing else would really make sense.
@@bigj3367 if the tranny had the stub shafts that stayed in and you unbolted the axles from them then you would not have to deal with the fluid as the tranny would stay sealed.
@Build It Garage yeah that's how I know it from vw and bmw
Also another ?, is there any bolts that are real hard to get lose that might break? Thanks
Indian Creek - usually the bolts will come undone. But that depends on how much rust there is on the car. Up here in Washington most cars just have minor rust on the frame bolts. But in Boston where they salt the roads I hear they can get a lot of rust. The only place you are almost definitely going to find rusty bolts is on the exhaust. Water likes to sit in the cracks around the flanges and I guess rust likes getting warmed up.
I can't remember if the exhaust has nuts and studs or nuts and bolts. If they are bolts they can be replaced with any thing that is a similar diameter and length.
when you unbolt the slave cylinder is, it going to realease fluid, i would like to know so that i dont get air in the system.
Sorry for the long delay in response. There should not be any fluid from the slave cylinder when you unbolt it. If there is then you have a leak and you need to replace it. There are seals in the slave cylinder that keep all the fluid pressure in.
I have a 2000 Honda Civic , I just noticed it sounds like the input shaft bearing is going out you can here it at idle and a little while driving but not all the time in gear, ?? How long you think I could go on it before it needs fixed, is this something that progress quick? Or slow , thanks great video
Indian Creek - that is impossible to say. That input shafts has side loads due to the interface between the shafts. It could last a long time but might go tomorrow. I would have to say, You should fix it as soon as you can.
Paul Wyndham thanks
do I have to remove t bracket.?
Nice video, what's the name of the song.
James Holcombe - I don't remember, it was included in the video editing software I had at the time.
the pin that hold the shift rod, where can i get a new one?
Napa or an auto parts store might have one, or a honda dealer. you might also be able to use a snug fitting nut and bolt
true. i only have experiance with 88-00 honda civics in doing clutches. all cars are generally the same, but i've done so many honda's that i could probably do it with my eyes closed haha
Does this work on a 95 civic
But Just Wasn't This A Great tutorial In A Way Lol.. I Appreciate It
Glad you liked it in a way. Thanks for watching. Sorry I never finished the reassembly.
You want to make sure your fill plug comes out before you take out the drain plug.
On a 2000 civic do you need to remove axel nut and axel from hub to pull axel out of trans for removing transmission , any advice is greatly appreciated thanks
Indian Creek - I am not positive what the suspension is like on the 2000. I would assume that you could remove the lower control arm bolt and pull the hub far enough out that the axle could clear the transmission. I have done that on many cars.
Paul Wyndham thanks
Are you the original owner?
Nope, we got the Honda very used. I have never been the original owner of anything (car that is).
And what if the pins or castle nuts don't just come right off? Been turning this damn castle nut forever
Ben hoover - that means the ball stud is spinning with the nut. sometimes they have a small internal or external he that you can use a wrench or Allen tool on. Otherwise you have to figure out how to hold the bolt still.
what cause a nissan sentra 04 model 4 cylinder idol high in park like it will be up in the 2 on rpms and i smell antifreeze every once in a while too
Sarah Good sounds like you smell your problem
HELP part 2 is not loading!
Sorry I don't know what to say. It loads on my machine. Hopefully you got it working since you posted.
This car is exactly the same car I have, and needs clutch replacement. Actually, the clutch release fork snapped. It is broken. Replacement the clutch and the flywheel is not an option but I will replacement anyways. I have watch this 10 times already. The camera lady had hard time getting the shots on the bolts and I find it hard to follow what was remove.
What time on the video are you trying to figure out?
Why did i just watch this, i dont have a Honda lol. Good info tho
I got lucky someone already punched out the pin and put a bolt 🤷♂️
Informative and well explained. But the music was terrible. Seriously awful.
Sorry, I will remember not to put it in the next videos. I lost the sound clip anyways. Glad you liked the rest of it though.
You forgot to remove the front glass window!
2 things ,,whenever possible ,,,like on the castle nuts. push on a bolt ,not pull, less likely to damage your face it it suddenly lets go, which it did both times, and both times yoou came within millimeters of racking your nuck\les,
also, buy your self a 1/2 inch drive set.. my god only 30 dollars and you get a lot more leverage,
would be simalar, but thats a different gen civic.
well if you have all the tools and the power tools i would agree you can do it in a matter of time but 2 hours thats no way even with the work of profesional unless you have someone helping you
hehe
youve gotta be kidding me..i would bet 1gran if you really can do it under 2hrs of work.
do you have to take out both axles?
