This is most likely one of the reasons why item spy is gone. You could potentially have two chances to successfully pull a shock dodge if you were cheeky enough to item smuggle all the way to the front with a boo and a star.

The reasons item spy is gone is because the Gamepad is gone. Every game that had item spy had a second screen, unless I'm remembering incorrectly.
No, you're right. Still, a missed feature but it's gone for the better.
I found it both annoying and useful, mostly because I play a lot differently with item spy.
predicting shocks its kind of easy in this game tho. the game most of the times aligns a shock, bullets and stars at the same time so people can Dodge (as an example this video on the first and 3rd race) so if you see in the map 1 or 2 bullets and 1 or 2 stars. use whatever you have to dodge even if it Is not the best place to use the ítem.

A: Item Smuggling is bringing the best items to 1st.
For example, Mankalor is last place. He gets a Lightning Bolt. He saves it until he gets to 1st and uses it.

I like to smuggle stars in Shine Thief. Wait for the opponent to drop it, pick it up, do a little mind games, and when I'm about to get item spammed, I use it. This has won me a couple games.

This whole time I thought the first game that introduced a way to avoid the blue shell was Mario Kart 8, but you could use Star Power the entire time!

All the way up into Double Dash (because after that I haven't played any of the Mario Karts), I would find ways to either kill, glitch, or out maneuver the blue shell. My friends and family hated playing against me because I could do miniboosts on long straightaways, break blue shells, and knew all the shortcuts. They always wondered why I almost always play on Time Trials... In Mario Kart 64, one time my cousin was about to beat me in a race, we were close (about 2 karts behind, I was), so I did what any person that knows the game does, I spun myself out for the minor speed boost, and timed it so that when it stopped me, I was already across the finish line. She tried to say I was lucky, but then she saw me do it to out run a ghost, it was then she noticed how it worked and knew, I don't spin out unless I want to, and when I want to.
Thinks to myself "Oh I see, just sandbag to victory. Interesting method at winning"

Holy balls, that better method of huge shortcut on first clip tho! I remember someone done that few years ago on Wii U version, but the opposite way of mid-air drifting, and I could never pull it out. xD
