My biggest mistake was upgrading my Mac to 10.15 - it borked a bunch of stuff and made my old MidiMan MIDI converter unusable. The solution was to downgrade back to 10.13.
There are always tradeoffs. My home studio has the washer and dryer in it as well as the water heater, plus several other tradeoffs since it's a single car built in garage. But I can still get some killer recordings in there. It's not perfect, but it more than gets the job done. Your screen mount was the ultimate DIY hack!
I have an all in one room home studio. I love the workflow of having everything in the same room since im usually tracking myself. I have a sidecar rack in a roadcase with my pres and interface and its a life saver. Plus its portable so i can take it to bands practice spaces to record demos or do pre pro. My main issue in my studio is the room mics will pick up noise from the furnace and air conditioning and plumbing that are right outside the door but i make the most of it. Even if i have to turn off the heat while i track in the winter lol.
I also find that having my drums in the same studio space as the 'control area' causes some acoustic issues. Same goes for acoustic guitars. I'll have to live with that though. Thank you for the insights in this video! On a side note: the lower third at 13:01 says 'constulting'.
Honestly, I have the same setup (making my big detached garage 2 rooms soon for tracking and mixing). Put a flat black blanket over the drums and turn off the snare head when mixing. It makes it so you don’t hear ring out from the cymbals if you’re listening to takes/ mixing. If that is your issue of course.
Just redid my studio, and got rid of the stuff that was bugging me. So much better now. In my case, as simple as getting rid of a couch, creating more space, rearranging, rewiring, etc. definitely worth the extra effort.
I have had similar issues and fixes in my room. Totally relate. About the same size as yours. Suggestions would be: 1-Replace fridge with a good vintage cooler. Ice packs last a long time, and you could paint up a cooler to fit room. 2- Get rid of chair and replace with a funky old trunk with a flat top, put casters on it and a nice pillow to sit on. That way lots of storage and a seat. 3- Buy a office chair. I used a drum stool for a long time [drummer] and realized sometimes sitting back in a chair while working switched my brain just a bit can punctuate mixing decisions. No going back for me. I also built a drum riser [4 inches off floor]. It can be moved if need be, but like the chair it puts the kit into a different perspective. It is subtle, but it lends to performance based takes. For my videos I have been bringing my kit into crazy outdoor locations, culverts, creeks, forests etc, and was surprised how the environment changes the approach to the playing, both sonically of course, and atmospheric. My studio 'B' is a mobile Airstream trailer that I use mainly for the Adventure Recording, but I also use it as a control room for my studio 'A' with a snake that goes through the outside wall into the room. Park a little trailer outside? I live in rural Canada so I can get away with it from a security perspective. So these little things we focus on are indeed important. Great videos mate. I'm going through same placement processes now. About to do rock wool baffles. On your fridge situation, look at a square plastic moving dolly at local HD or Lowe's. They have 4" steerable, locking wheels and you can roll it back and forth. Just an idea seeing you video. Thanks for your show.

Bro! Great channel, I have a space about the same size and have made very similar decisions. 1. Recess the Fridge or put it on a small dolly. 2. Make your Bass traps hinged and store things behind/inside like mic stands (acoustic guys please don't murder me for this suggestion). 3. You ceiling can be used to mount lights and could be totally flexible.. look up some grip gear. It would totally clean up your floor.

Also, hard drives (the spinning kind) should not be anywhere near any magnetic fields, which means putting them by a speaker isn't a good idea, even if the speaker cabinet is shielded. Fix for this AND noise is to go with SSD drives, but they are more $$$.
I feel like calling my space a "studio" would be an insult to real home studios... Basically a bedroom with gear strewn around so I can hack together some semblance of a recording for RUclips videos. The biggest oopsie is probably that my giant Fender Super Reverb is sitting under a triangular ceiling (bedroom under the roof type thing). The feedback is very real sometimes, I definitely have to move everything around.
For the fridge you can place it on a small 4 wheel dolly so it can be rolled around easily. The are not too expensive at hardware stores. The only concerns would be adding height to the fridge/coffee maker and levelness.
I have 3 wall hangers but 11 guitars. I keep the ones that are most in demand next to me so I can stay as out of shape as possible. Also I love your channel! I learned how to stream with my EOS R thanks to you. Good stuff.
I used to have everything in one room, but it was so tight for space. I eventually took a sawzall and cut out an opening for a sliding glass door, the new room became the control room. The biggest oopsie overall was similar to one of yours, I wish I had my snakes and panels built into the wall. Totally agree with needing a neat and tidy space, no visible clutter.
Have you considered using gels on your hot lights to balance the color? That what us old photographer/videographers do. Just grab a gel that matches your background color and the white balance your camera for that. Everything will match. Granted color matching with adjustable color leds are more high tech... but in the meantime, gels could help your problem. Fwiw. Love your channel.

FRIDGE problem: put the fridge on a little dolly with wheels (like a moving dolly) - then you can easily move it when you need to get to that extra storage. one tip that I can give is: put everything on wheels. I just have a small room at a second floor. it not just help to isolate te vibrations from de drums and the amps to the floor but it is also super helpful to easily move things around and adapt to different studio situations.

I work in a pretty peaceful neighbourhood with a setup very much similar to yours. Noise during recording has been a huge issue for me. Can you give some suggestions to deal with those?

Just a thought, why not get rid of the mirror and build nice looking shelves in its place for more storage. Also, i know the cost is probably astronomical, but you said you wanted another room. Why not eventually take your patio/deck and build that into another room for your drums? My room is terrible, My cats live in it and thats why I cant put fabric on my walls, they will tear it up.
I have some plans for more shelving and DIY furniture. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs, amazingly I've only had my cat mess with the fabric once due to a fly that got in and landed on it.
Yes, the Appolo interface can be warm that's why UA advocates leaving some space above and below it. Personnaly I leave a 1U empty space above and 1/2 U below my X8.

If yo have not already fixed the door issue I put a drape across the two doors with windows. Slide the drape across when you want light and slide the drape across back when you don't want light and you want sound isolation. I suggest a heavy sound absorbing drape too.
This may be more trouble than its worth but could you rebuild the wall panel where the fridge is so that the fridge sits back in the 12in gap where the outside wall is? This would recess the fridge slightly so it doesn’t sit out as far from the wall and take up as much floor space?
Ideally that's what I'd do. I also like the ability to be able to access every space to clean and maintain. Maybe I could do that and put the fridge on a little dolly or something.

We actually live close to the distributor, so at the time we purchased it we were able to just drive to pick it up ourselves. There was no wait time. Unfortunately, since the brand has blown up in popularity, I don't think they allow this sort of 'pick-up' option any longer for us Nashvillians (is that a word? lol). But hey, for the price and quality I personally think it would be well worth the wait if we were still in the market for a desk.

Another great video Andrew! My little home studio is almost finished - only need to finish the diffuser for the back wall. Around 240 small wooden blocks need to be sawn (with an angle) by hand and then painted. But i'll get there :) Also got a arm stand for my monitor (luckily it fits haha). Do you experience any heating issues with the woodenblock and the glue?
Good question, I have not yet. I spent sometime testing where the most heat is generate on the lights first. Then built the little mount according to that.
Hi Andrew, how have you selected the color for your studio? Can I ask what is the name of the grey you choose for the wall? Very cool, nice atmosphere. Selecting the right paint color for the studio is important and not that easy. I also noticed in another video it matches the color palette of your template in Luna, not sure if it is intended tho. :D
Haha good question. I mostly just like neutral colors and didn’t want something close to my skin tone since I film it gets weird when you blend in with the walls. The Luna thing is probably just me picking colors that are also neutral.

I have an insane studio and no musicians....some people just build an Incredible Space...all 24 track (now vintage) hard drive and world class preamps and mic recording gear I believe there are so many dudes that could kill recordings but don't have the the talent resources
Limited space? Vertical storage! :) Put shelving all over those sparsely covered walls. Not bookcases - make or buy racks / shelves you can install directly to the walls. Your guitar stand should only need to be pulled over so that it is closer to the chair - that would give you an immediate solution for your access problem (to behind the desk).
Not always, I have/had that with the desk and still ate up my knees. However my new desk has a better height where the drawer doesn't chop up my legs. It's awesome.
No sheet rock. Basically the walls are all giant absorption panels. Not intended for soundproofing, but for treatment. Design lifted from Eric Valentine. Sounds amazing and mixes translate phenomenally. But I didn’t have the budget to make it sound proof and go all in on that.
Where do I begin for home studio fail? (facepalm). I have a reasonable midsized home studio (film editing and music comp) room where I imported some items from our office studio. It desperately needs more thoughtfully designed sound treatment and aesthetic (the walls are peach - my wife loves the color - I want to spoon out my eyeballs). Because this room is still VERY multi-purposed, it might as well some godawful sadistic nightmare ( more civilly - it's basically a 'multipurpose-too-many-todos' sort of room whose non-studio functions I need to move elsewhere). I've thought that a good interior acoustic designer would be a useful key in righting my cloudy vision of a proper design (and helping convince my wife that yeah, some things just aren't gonna work well there). The big oopsies - well - the entire current setup is an oopsie - quick breakdown (I'll link pictures if interested) :) Left long wall: I have a really long set of tall bookshelves, some of them with glass paneled cabinet doors. Short wall (front): It's a false wall, making it REALLY hard to route power (studs are horizontal on these). I have a bass trap in the left corner and sufficient acoustic paneling in front of my desk. Bass trapping the right corner is challenging due to another workdesk (I had originally intended it as an L-shaped desk arrangement) and some suspended cabinets. I'm lacking some cloud panels - pretty simple fix (the reflections from the acid stained concrete floor become really bizarre at times - but generally maddening). Workstation (front) Using an 80" x 30" uplift desk. Audio monitors are on stands behind the desk and decoupled from everything else. I think what 'saves' the sound from mud are the panels and the fact these are A7x's with front firing ports. BUT my video setup really complicates speaker placement. I'm using a sturdy monitor arm post that supports clamp on monitor arms that hold 1 x 32" 4k editing monitor, and below that a row of 3 x 27" general purpose screens. The grommet mount for the post is as far back as it can go on the desk (about 4" in from the back of the desk). In order to keep the audio interfaces closer to the back of the desk to allegedly gain some space, I raised the 27" screens. And now that interferes with the audio monitor line of sight. Yay. I blew that one. Heh, I also have a 37 key novation midi controller on the desk (center front). To the left I have a Black Magic speed editor. On the underside of the desk I build a sliding shelf to hold a MOXf8. All of this thinking I was putting everything where I needed it and streamlining things. Yeah, that worked out well. Not that I ever considered well enough how I'd SIT at the desk. Since I didn't have a reasonably location to place my PC keyboard, I've put it in front of the desk, atop a spare snare stand clamping my practice pad. Doing this until I can think of a better solution (none of the keyboard shelves/drawers/sliders out there will work the way I have it setup - boy was I a genius). I ended up strapping a mouse pad to the arm of my old ergo chair. That's alot of fun. Overall, the problems with this desk setup are 1) a lack of optimizing space/access to things on the desk, 2) interference with the audio monitors, and 3) ergo considerations given I can hardly get my knees under the damned moxf8 shelf! Right long wall: To the right of my workstation, I have wall suspended cabinets I use to organize smaller items. The cabinet has puck led's underneath and lights an uplift table on rollers. Underneath that is where I have lights, c-stands, clamps, flags, tripods and some frequently used tools - all of this hidden behind several stacked akro-mills organizers (I have fasteners, electronics items, scuba gear maintenance parts, general other crap). To the right of that, I have a husky tool chest which has too many 'todos' atop it. Then there's the large window with a bamboo roll curtain on it, where my wife/kids' desk is. Short wall (back): Back of the room is a combination of midsized shelves, a printer cart, and a corner chair. Somewhere in the middle of the room I used to keep my acoustic drum kit, but that's broken down and stacked for the moment until I can organize everything to bare bones and maybe, just maybe get a better perspective on making this thing work so I can get additional work done at home when I'm not in the office. *sigh* Idiocracy confirmed ......
Everything about this video makes me twitch. Am I right in understanding the only purpose of the fridge is for creamer/milk? Just get a small little thermos like coffee shops keep milk/creamer in for customers to use. The chair is serving no purpose but making the room feel overcrowded and keeping you from putting the guitar stand where it should be. And those front corners...you've filled the space behind the spanning panels, so they're not really bass traps at that point, and you've put a huge flat plank on the front mooting their use as mid/high frequency absorbers, too. Overall you seem to be trying to get the space to do so many things it can't do any of them well. Having worked from home for 7 years, what I learned fairly quickly in the 1st year is that the main thing I needed in a home office was privacy and functionality; and that the main benefit of working from home is that I have my house, garden, front porch and neighborhood right out my office door to access for mental/physical breaks or to have a cup of coffee with a friend mid-day or whatever.
It's all about the client's comfort man. A comfy chair and a hot cup of fresh coffee are sometimes all clients require to get that 'I can be here all day, every day' feeling. Andrew knows what's up.

That’s hilarious. I wound up moving the fridge to a spot that wasn’t being used at all it actually solved several issues simultaneously.
You should get an MX Master mouse. It'll change your world in editing.

I'm about to get a Apollo X6 interface but it doesn't have midi inputs, can you let me know what hardware I need for it to work as I have a lot of midi equipment. Just a thought, why not get rid of the mirror and build nice looking shelves in its place for more storage. Also, i know the cost is probably astronomical, but you said you wanted another room. Why not eventually take your patio/deck and build that into another room for your drums? My room is terrible, My cats live in it and thats why I cant put fabric on my walls, they will tear it up.
I have some plans for more shelving and DIY furniture. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs, amazingly I've only had my cat mess with the fabric once due to a fly that got in and landed on it.
Yes, the Appolo interface can be warm that's why UA advocates leaving some space above and below it. Personnaly I leave a 1U empty space above and 1/2 U below my X8.

Both! Some are HDD and one is SSD
@@AndrewMasters Oh gotcha! That makes sense! I have 3 glyph drives under my raven console that are very loud ha. I try to turn off all but one while recording. Wanting to get all SSD.
Put the mini fridge on a cart/movers dolly roll it away to gain stands etc roll it back when done... Boom Baby!

If yo have not already fixed the door issue I put a drape across the two doors with windows. Slide the drape across when you want light and slide the drape across back when you don't want light and you want sound isolation. I suggest a heavy sound absorbing drape too.
This may be more trouble than its worth but could you rebuild the wall panel where the fridge is so that the fridge sits back in the 12in gap where the outside wall is? This would recess the fridge slightly so it doesn’t sit out as far from the wall and take up as much floor space?
Ideally that's what I'd do. I also like the ability to be able to access every space to clean and maintain. Maybe I could do that and put the fridge on a little dolly or something.
Easy fix would be to put the fridge on sliding rails

Do you deal with resonance woahs having the drums in there full time?
Surprisingly I have never had any issues. I think because of the treatment of the room there is basically no resonance in the room.

Surprisingly enough, I don't have an issue with that. You can use a tape roller or vacuum it. In general this room doesn't get very dusty.

Rockwool isn’t made from sheep’s wool. It’s fiberglass. Made of glass fibers from basalt rock.

We actually live close to the distributor, so at the time we purchased it we were able to just drive to pick it up ourselves. There was no wait time. Unfortunately, since the brand has blown up in popularity, I don't think they allow this sort of 'pick-up' option any longer for us Nashvillians (is that a word? lol). But hey, for the price and quality I personally think it would be well worth the wait if we were still in the market for a desk.

My little home studio is almost finished - only need to finish the diffuser for the back wall. Around 240 small wooden blocks need to be sawn (with an angle) by hand and then painted. But i'll get there :) Also got a arm stand for my monitor (luckily it fits haha). Do you experience any heating issues with the woodenblock and the glue?
Good question, I have not yet. I spent sometime testing where the most heat is generate on the lights first. Then built the little mount according to that.
Oh, rereading that I think. You're referring to the monitor, I've had no issues with that. I've been using this system for it for about 3 months.

Hi Andrew, how have you selected the color for your studio? Can I ask what is the name of the grey you choose for the wall? Very cool, nice atmosphere. Selecting the right paint color for the studio is important and not that easy. I also noticed in another video it matches the color palette of your template in Luna, not sure if it is intended tho. :D
Haha good question. I mostly just like neutral colors and didn’t want something close to my skin tone since I film it gets weird when you blend in with the walls. The Luna thing is probably just me picking colors that are also neutral.

For a small place that I have, have you tried the Iloud micro monitors?
I’ve never owned them, but I know some composers who’ve use them when their monitors were out of commission or they’re on the road. They said that they were surprisingly great!

So what is the purpose for no Sheetrock and 12in deep acoustic treatment other than the obvious as in there is a ton of absorption. What was the reason behind the design. I’m just building a new studio and I’m curious because I’m putting walls up but this is very interesting

If you have two Rooms....don’t do the cable Management into the Floor.....better put it into the wall beside the two rooms. Only Signal Cables.
All the space I have is a 11.5ft.x 12ft room. No matter how I try to figure the layout, there just isn't room for comfort. Maybe one day...
I have an insane studio and no musicians....some people just build an Incredible Space...all 24 track (now vintage) hard drive and world class preamps and mic recording gear

Limited space? Vertical storage! :) Put shelving all over those sparsely covered walls. Not bookcases - make or buy racks / shelves you can install directly to the walls. Your guitar stand should only need to be pulled over so that it is closer to the chair - that would give you an immediate solution for your access problem (to behind the desk).
Actually, that kind of works. The keyboard drawer makes it tricky, but yeah I'm going to roll with this and see how it goes. Thanks!

The keyboard/drawer issue is easily solved with a height adjustable chair.
Not always, I have/had that with the desk and still ate up my knees. However my new desk has a better height where the drawer doesn't chop up my legs. It's awesome.
Careful when leaving the hard drives to close to the speakers! Speakers have magnets in them, which can erase hard drive data!

you built walls 12inches deep all the way around? There is sheet rock up as well or did I hear you say there wasn’t? wow
No sheet rock. Basically the walls are all giant absorption panels. Not intended for soundproofing, but for treatment. Design lifted from Eric Valentine. Sounds amazing and mixes translate phenomenally. But I didn’t have the budget to make it sound proof and go all in on that.
Where do I begin for home studio fail? (facepalm). I have a reasonable midsized home studio (film editing and music comp) room where I imported some items from our office studio. It desperately needs more thoughtfully designed sound treatment and aesthetic (the walls are peach - my wife loves the color - I want to spoon out my eyeballs). Because this room is still VERY multi-purposed, it might as well some godawful sadistic nightmare ( more civilly - it's basically a 'multipurpose-too-many-todos' sort of room whose non-studio functions I need to move elsewhere). I've thought that a good interior acoustic designer would be a useful key in righting my cloudy vision of a proper design (and helping convince my wife that yeah, some things just aren't gonna work well there).
The big oopsies - well - the entire current setup is an oopsie - quick breakdown (I'll link pictures if interested) :)
Left long wall:
I have a really long set of tall bookshelves, some of them with glass paneled cabinet doors.
Short wall (front):
It's a false wall, making it REALLY hard to route power (studs are horizontal on these). I have a bass trap in the left corner and sufficient acoustic paneling in front of my desk. Bass trapping the right corner is challenging due to another workdesk (I had originally intended it as an L-shaped desk arrangement) and some suspended cabinets.
I'm lacking some cloud panels - pretty simple fix (the reflections from the acid stained concrete floor become really bizarre at times - but generally maddening).
Workstation (front)
Using an 80" x 30" uplift desk. Audio monitors are on stands behind the desk and decoupled from everything else. I think what 'saves' the sound from mud are the panels and the fact these are A7x's with front firing ports.
BUT my video setup really complicates speaker placement. I'm using a sturdy monitor arm post that supports clamp on monitor arms that hold 1 x 32" 4k editing monitor, and below that a row of 3 x 27" general purpose screens. The grommet mount for the post is as far back as it can go on the desk (about 4" in from the back of the desk). In order to keep the audio interfaces closer to the back of the desk to allegedly gain some space, I raised the 27" screens. And now that interferes with the audio monitor line of sight. Yay. I blew that one.
Heh, I also have a 37 key novation midi controller on the desk (center front). To the left I have a Black Magic speed editor. On the underside of the desk I build a sliding shelf to hold a MOXf8. All of this thinking I was putting everything where I needed it and streamlining things.
Yeah, that worked out well. Not that I ever considered well enough how I'd SIT at the desk. Since I didn't have a reasonably location to place my PC keyboard, I've put it in front of the desk, atop a spare snare stand clamping my practice pad. Doing this until I can think of a better solution (none of the keyboard shelves/drawers/sliders out there will work the way I have it setup - boy was I a genius). I ended up strapping a mouse pad to the arm of my old ergo chair. That's alot of fun.
Overall, the problems with this desk setup are 1) a lack of optimizing space/access to things on the desk, 2) interference with the audio monitors, and 3) ergo considerations given I can hardly get my knees under the damned moxf8 shelf!
Right long wall:
To the right of my workstation, I have wall suspended cabinets I use to organize smaller items. The cabinet has puck led's underneath and lights an uplift table on rollers. Underneath that is where I have lights, c-stands, clamps, flags, tripods and some frequently used tools - all of this hidden behind several stacked akro-mills organizers (I have fasteners, electronics items, scuba gear maintenance parts, general other crap). To the right of that, I have a husky tool chest which has too many 'todos' atop it.
Then there's the large window with a bamboo roll curtain on it, where my wife/kids' desk is.
Short wall (back):
Back of the room is a combination of midsized shelves, a printer cart, and a corner chair.
Somewhere in the middle of the room I used to keep my acoustic drum kit, but that's broken down and stacked for the moment until I can organize everything to bare bones and maybe, just maybe get a better perspective on making this thing work so I can get additional work done at home when I'm not in the office.
*sigh* Idiocracy confirmed ......
All these AV content creators and none of them have a NAS for there data and backups. Hard Drive crash!

Everything about this video makes me twitch. Am I right in understanding the only purpose of the fridge is for creamer/milk? Just get a small little thermos like coffee shops keep milk/creamer in for customers to use. The chair is serving no purpose but making the room feel overcrowded and keeping you from putting the guitar stand where it should be. And those front corners...you've filled the space behind the spanning panels, so they're not really bass traps at that point, and you've put a huge flat plank on the front mooting their use as mid/high frequency absorbers, too. Overall you seem to be trying to get the space to do so many things it can't do any of them well. Having worked from home for 7 years, what I learned fairly quickly in the 1st year is that the main thing I needed in a home office was privacy and functionality; and that the main benefit of working from home is that I have my house, garden, front porch and neighborhood right out my office door to access for mental/physical breaks or to have a cup of coffee with a friend mid-day or whatever.
It's all about the client's comfort man. A comfy chair and a hot cup of fresh coffee are sometimes all clients require to get that 'I can be here all day, every day' feeling. Andrew knows what's up.
