Thanks so much for the review. I'm building out my own enclosed cargo trailer but your comments really help me consider various aspects I would not have thought of otherwise.
Huge selling point of the Explore that wasn’t mentioned enough is its off-road capabilities. You buy this camper because you boondock and get off pavement for most of your excursions. It’s built to travel on gravel and dirt. The new OVS 270 awnings they are now using are easy to setup and can deploy without support when wind is light. Yes, a little stool may be needed but it’s really pretty easy. I have a friend that had a GO! and they sold after one year due to the amount of setup time needed to create the covered live space. In his words, it was a lot of work!
I always felt like the setup was part of the Zen of camping. But I like to set up for more extended stays, so extra work setting up is just part of the Zen of camping.
My first step up from tent camping was a Sylvan Sport Go. I love the versatility, build quality and sleeping room. I ended up upgrading to a nüCamp 320S teardrop for completely contained camping. I love them both and still have the Sylvan for when we have a bigger group going. The teardrop just opens up where and when we camp because we’re not so beholden to the weather. It’s also great when we’re driving for two days to visit family - no hotel room needed!

Some really neat trailers featured here. I've come to love the simplicity and low maintenance of a teardrop, I cringe at all the moving parts and the fact that it might smell like a mechanic shop after a year or two. Something for everyone though! Thanks for helping show us all of the options available! Congratulations again guys!
We have a 2017 Aliner Classic Off-road and I love it! The inside footprint is actually smaller than my previous trailer (1987 Colman Columbia Tent trailer) and it sleeps less people, but the inside “lives” better for us. We have the hard dormers on ours and people are always surprised how roomy it feels, considering how small it is. It’s super easy to tow, tracks great,has real tires on it , it’s wide enough to sleep across it (the Columbia was too short for him), has plenty of outside storage and we can even pack a lot inside while traveling and not deal with the stuff in the Honda Pilot. It can fit in the garage easily, and then we can open it up once inside the garage. I always cook outside, but it’s easy to just heat up water inside. The stove can sit on the counter or on a rail outside, however I tend to use my one burner duel stove the most. My Aliner sleeps 3-4, we have a queen size on one side an a twin on the other, so 3 adults or 2 adults with 2 little kids (you could probably make a bunk bed over the twin too). I like to camp and don’t mind the extra work of a pop-up trailer. It’s probably actually less work than folks towing a 30 ft travel trailer and dealing with the wind, switching lanes, slow up hills, swaying, large water tanks, parking and maneuvering. When we want amenities, we just get a hotel room, lol. It’s still cheaper and easier than those 30K+ rigs with a lot less headaches.
The "Lives" better is a big thing to us as well. We find a camper can be tiny, but still live better. You seriously have me interested in an Aliner for our family. We are going to have to start researching them again. It has been a while.
I have a 2018, Ranger 12 Aliner. I love mine ! I chose it over teardrop cause I can stand up in it for same price. It is turnkey ready. The more I look at what others have, vans, class B & C, etc. mine has lots of room. And, it takes 30 sec to set up! Check them out. My lithium batteries on solar last forever. It carries 17 gal water. Furnace. Stove. I carry another to cook outside when hot. My Jeep Wrangler TJ pulls easily.
We constantly hit the ‘get a truck’ point but have kept our V6 Santa Fe which seems capable with the 7-Pin Setup. We typically haul 2-3 kayaks and 2-3 mountain bikes when camping, so we looked at the Intech trailers for a while. I liked the box on wheels idea but my wife didn’t. We’ve recently gone with a reno’d ‘76 Surf-side camper. Kayaks go on the car roof and bikes inside. Works ok.
Thanks for mentioning the Go! Just got back from a trip where we were able to take our dirtbikes and camp comfortably. Being able to bring the toys, not having to have a big tow vehicle, fully stand up inside and sleep all 4 of us comfortably was huge! Also if the backing up skills are new, one can always move the GO by hand, it's that light!

3 things I’d like mention regarding this review of the Explore.
1. Deploying the tip out beds takes a little more time than was displayed. In your video the inside casing and windows were already unzipped and rolled up. Sure it only take a few more minutes to do these but still worth noting.
2. A 2nd tip out option was mentioned but with the explore you do lose the side entrance door and the back ramp gets replaced with double barn doors when the 2nd tip out is included.
3. The tongue weight on these are very heavy (appx 350 lbs on the explore if I’m not mistaken). You will most likely still need a truck to haul these units. Although a heavy duty suv may do the trick as well.

Yes!! Thank you for once again broadening our horizons in the small camper life scene. When the boys and I got out of school a couple weeks ago, I took the family on a road trip to McCarthy and Valdez. Our friends happened to be in McCarthy the same time and let us borrow a couple of their ATVs to ride up to the Kennecott mines. It was amazing. Since then, I've been trying to figure out how to A) convince my wife that we "need" a side by side, B) figure out the logistics of transporting the side by side and our teardrop simultaneously (preferably without having to buy a truck), and C) did I mention convincing my wife of our family's need for a UTV?
Anyways, who knew toy hauler-type trailers came in such small packages?! Also the transforming cargo trailer is definitely an option too--we burn with wood basically year-round so have been wanting to get a big trailer to haul wood with since we moved up here. We shall see.
Now that sounds like an amazing trip. That is something folks pay thousands of dollars to come up here to do. So neat that you get to do this in your own back yard. Yes, the cargo trailer idea has been in the back of our minds for a while as well. We have put ours to use a bit lately and it really is great. One day it hauls, the next day it camps.
Thank you for the honest review!You surely know your thing and you pointing out pros and cons that most of the people would have ignored.Just one about the explorer,the tip out bed is 46''x81 and the salesman said that it can sleep 2-3 adults.I believe that at that width(46''=117cm,i'm watching from Europe) there is only room for only one adult or two small kids.

I like it.... The Flyer Discovery is just about everything I'd want!
One valid point made, loss of wall storage space or windows having a pop out bed. I have a 6x14 cargo to haul an 1800 Trike and I've been searching for a pop out bed, no more because of that reason. No tent trailer is comparable to a hard sided enclosed trailer, not for noise, heating or cooling and no canvas lasts as maintenance free like a hard sided wall. However, Jumping Jacks are a great choice if you can live with a tent trailer.
I love my SylvanSport Go. I should add that their customer service is top notch. I’ve even had their engineers work with me as I’m working through some modifications for more overlanding type usage. If my Subaru Outback can clear something the trailer will clear it. It gets plenty of utility usage too. I call it upperclass tent camping.
Hopefully they take your ideas and incorporate them into a product offering, or option. Not having one with a high clearance articulating suspension when "Overlanding," and "Softroading," is at a huge peak, seems ridiculous

I personally love the batwing awning, in the winter especially if you enclose it by purchasing the walls. The downside is the price of the walls....sheesh.
You guys are at a crossroads that we all hit sooner or later. Your family is growing and you need a bigger trailer but you don't want to buy a bigger more expensive (to operate and to buy) vehicle. I camp alone these days (I'm 70) but I have a Casita 17 pulled by a 6 cylinder basic F150'. When I camp, I am frequently surrounded by enormous 5th wheels or trailers with huge 1 ton diesel pickups. I sympathize with your dilemma. There are 6 cyl SUVs and trucks out there that you might consider that would be good daily drivers, too. Good luck on your search, going fairly small is working for me. Safe camping!
Thank you for sharing this information. Yes, we love the feeling of tiny campers and the ability to tow easy. But, at the same time we are starting to bring quite a bit of gear. Backpacking gear, boating gear, etc. I like the idea of looking for a 4 door truck that could be our daily driver.

You brought up great points. I have one more to add. Pull out kitchens. With a clam shell style you have only the bottom edge to deal with mud and dust which I have a strip of old shower curtain and magnets that shield my shins from dirt and mud. As for the pullout kitchen the whole side of my trailer is muddy or dusty and ya cant use the wheelwell for prep space. That help make my decision on my trailer.
That is a really good point. I never even thought about that. Similar point. We were really interested in the Jumping Jack trailer a year or two back. But then when reading forums you find with the open design all your gear gets covered in mud before you reach the campsite. Obvious, but for some reason it never came to our mind.
I drove through the north roads of Neb. CO. And UT. They use a slurry on the roads in winter. My ARB awning aluminium zipper was tough to work free. I now coat it with Beeswax. I use graphite spray in my locks too once a year.

That is us too. It really checks a lot of boxes for our family. Think how many electric bikes you could store in there! Love the electric bike content by the way. We are in the process of looking around for our first bike.
I wanted this one SO badly, but I couldn't pull it safely with my Jeep. Also, what you said about the awning is spot-on. I'm your height and couldn't deploy the awning alone on such a tall camper. So, I got the next size down and have been thrilled with the batwing. My Pursue isn't much bigger than most of the teardrops I see in your vids and I love small campers.
We have been using the batwing awning this summer on a teardrop that has 15" of clearance. It has been great! But, if it was just one inch higher it would be such a pain. I am becoming a batwing awning fan. I'm going to have to take back all the negative things I have said over the years. I just haven't used it with the right trailer. Your Pursue sounds perfect in terms of fit for the batwing.

Great video. Very informative. I NEED to have the ability to haul two full sized dirt bikes. I’d love to see a video of how much space is left when two bikes are loaded in. Id also like to see how much floor space is left when only one bike is loaded. Light weight, off-road (bad road) capability, Boondock-ability are all what I’m looking for. Two adults, two bikes and a dog and a half (catahoula and beagle).
We have a 2020 Intech Explore with double tip outs and absolutely love it!! This is our third camper and by far our favorite. It’s sturdy and perfect. We do not have a batwing awning on ours. Just use a pop up canopy. It’s what works for us.

@@PlayingwithSticks My main beef with any attached awning is what do you do when the sun moves across the sky? Spin your trailer around twice a day? What if you want to sit beside a campfire on a drizzle day? Do you want to put a fire that close to your trailer or just move the 10x10 over a couple of feet? If only they knew!

I have a Honda odyssey touring elite. It has roof rails and can tow up to 3500lbs. I can remove the center console, and the 3 seats in the middle row. The rear seats are stow n go. Due to latches and slope on floor, a mattress helps comfort if used for sleeping. It is deceptive as far as how much it can hold. I think the sienna- Toyota version, has awd option. They may help add storage/space options. Peace.

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to know the negative associated with a trailer. But if you want a salesman telling you only the positives, yes there’s a ton of videos out there like that.
I used to own an Intech Luna Rover…we sold it because we decided we were too old to crawl in and out of it…(I’m 64 and a little overweight). We rented it out and man was it popular! We ended selling it for more than we bought!

I’m a wheelchair user and looking at options how to camp by myself but also bring a scooter
@@dedclownsRfunny Right now I use a minivan with a ramp and a hatchback tent. That tent basically adds a large room to my van and allows me to park my wheelchair in the cab, while moving my sleeping area to the tent. I require personal assistance, though, so I never do that alone.
One of these days, I'll probably upgrade to something like this, though.
I am a wheelchair user as well. I would need some after market additions for accessibility. I definitely would be able to pull this with my mini van. I have factory tow package. I do love both Explorer and Disvover.
I love the idea that a towable trailer can be pulled with a minivan. So far after your research, what do you think are the best trailers for people with a wheelchair?

Thanks for another awesome video Drew, the trailer looks like a great hybrid of a tent trailer, cargo trailer and toy hauler, however not sure if I'd feel safe sleeping with such open sides in bear country! A powered batwing or traditional canopy would be a great feature to add
Yes, it does leave you a bit more vulnerable doesn't it. Yes, a powered version of either would be great. The jumping up and folding wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. Haha.
IMO it's a handy design because you could sleep 2 or 3 in bear country if you don't utilize the tip outs

You told me earlier this year you were going to do a review on the Explore...And here it is!! We love our Double tip out! And like you said in the review, this trailer has become our truck. I use it to haul things when not camping :) . Didn't have to get a new tow vehicle (use our Jeep Cherokee or Toyota Sienna). Haul our 5 bicycles, sleeps all 5 of us. We lined our tip outs so warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer (and darker which is important when up north with an 8 year old that wants to get up with daylight lol).
5 Bicycles! Now that is impressive. Great idea lining the tip-outs. I had never thought about that before.
What did you use for insulation in your tip outs?
How cold did it get and everyone was still comfortable?
@@patrickio8084 we used insulated black out curtains. The wrap nicely over the bars of the tip out and clip them to the entrance of the tip outs.
We have been out a couple times where it has gotten down to -10 to -15C (5 to 10F) overnight. So not extremely cold. Once we were plugged into shore power, the other we were not. Condensation does happen between the tip out and liner. Less with an electric heater vs propane lil buddy (water is a by product of propane burning). Just have to wipe down good. So currently looking at installing a propane or diesel heater that can vent out so less moisture. Someone also told me to try using some DampRid and that it helps. Never a problem outside of winter.
I also know owners that have used Reflectix insulation from a hard ware store to put along the sides as well.
Nice thing is there is no worrying about any water line freezing up or anything :)

Toy trailers look great we seem to be far behind idea wise in Australia only thing I’d change on some of the toy trailers are flyscreens

I do a lot of kayak fishing and I’m looking at this to fit my kayak inside with all my gear
I had a trailer by Lifetime years ago very similar to the Jumping Jack and we loved it. One off the problems with Jumping Jack and Sylvan Go is security. All of our camping gear was stolen including the tent portion leaving me with a utility trailer. 🤷🏻♂️

My 2021 RAM 1500 4x4 ecoDiesel North Edition get an average of 27 mpgs! We are pairing it up with an AT Overland Habitat.
Amazing what some trucks can get for gas mileage these days. I am having a hard time choosing a camper that lets me keep much of that high gas mileage. I have been doing lots of research on possible gas mileage for each camper and camper-type via anecdotal accounts and drag equations. Your camper pick should be about the best mileage you can get with its low front profile and light weight. Nice!
I think the Colorado trailers would be a better trailer to show for something which is comparable. A tent trailer maybe an option for some but they are not similar in many ways at all. Love your videos thanks again
Drew, apologies for the late comment. I've found your channel, heard several comments reviews about the batwing 270 pro's and con's. What about an 180, they're quite large for coverage, easier to operate etc in higher winds (that seems logical to me) you have the clamshell kitchen coverage and if one wanted to spend the money they could have one on both sides of a teardrop. Any thoughts?
Been following the groups of owners of the intech trailers that have the pop-out tent rooms and it seems that they can be a pain in the butt to keep clean/maintain/and keep dried out. Some people have experienced some equipment failures with the pop out tents as expected with soft materials.
I would really hope for a hard-walled pop-out tent solution someday.
Thank you for sharing this. The water issues with canvas make many of us a little nervous. However, after seeing how well my dad took care of his 1970s pop-up it did give me a little more confidence that with the right tlc they can stay looking new for years. BUT, that TLC takes work. And sometimes it is just nicer to get something with low to no maintenance. Like you said a hard-walled version sounds great.
Have you done a video of your cargo trailer conversion? Many people like CTC because they double as toy haulers too. It sounds like that could check off all the boxes you’re looking for.
Still using my 1986 Sunline Camper - 15 ft, I've looked at other campers, they just don't have the cozy feel.
When you find cozy, stick with it! We just sold one of our favorite cozy campers. I'm still wondering if it was a bad idea.
never a fan out outside kitchens, now sure you can put up a tarp when the rains coming sidways and you have 50mph winds to help... or when you have heavy snow drifts, you can dig an area out around your trailer... but the black flies...

Having a SAFE place to cook and eat...
Truck's though also opens the option to mix and match. You can run out with a truck bed camper, come back drop the camper pull the truck out, load the back, and tow the tear drop with gear in the back of the truck... or come back drop off the tear drop load up the bed camper, and hook up a cargo trailer to it, now you have the toys + the bed camper. OR come back and drop off the toy trailer and bring the scamp with the trailer, set the scamp up as a kids bedroom, with the adults in the truck trailer... do the cooking in the truck bed, and spend fun time in the camper with the kids.
Its not like you need a Toy Hauler.
The typical teardrop galley in the back does not work for me which is why I like the Flyer Pursue I bought. Having that back door to load bikes when on the move work great.

Which do you prefer a Jackery or Bluetti portable power station? I've seen reviews on both. It looks like the Bluetti is about $100.00 less when you compare like with like. I love your videos. Thank you

Seems like something you would see up here in Alaska. But, most Alaskans would probably find this too small.
The explorer should come with a option of a inside kitchen. That whole inside shelf could store it.

Great video. I was between a AntiShanty, InTech, and like models. Went with an ATC PLA350 just this month. Already have my 3 likes and dislikes:).
We have a VRV Flyer which is very similar to the Intech Chase. The guy who built VRV campers actually worked for Intech for a while. The VRV is all aluminum just like the Intech. Unfortunately VRV campers are not built anymore. The owner/builder started another company building a different type (more off road I believe) trailer. Sorry, I cannot remember the name of the new company. If you can find a used VRV, that would be an option very similar to the Intech Flyers.
Very good and impartial comments and reviews. I am using a pop up camper called Lees-Ure lite (now known as the Excel II from SLT trailers) which allows me tow it with my SUV or motorcycle. It has a double side bed and is very light. I got some videos on my channel if you’re interested. Well done mate ! Eddie

Are the prices that you mention in Alaska or lower 48th? We bought an older Toyhauler few years back that is 19 feet, 2700Lbs dry weight, has small bathroom , small kitchen, foldable bench that can sleep 1-2 people and queen size pop up. We are pulling it with our Chevy Express Van. My husband wanted to get rid of it when he got larger Travel trailer envy but I think we should keep it and remodel.
Where do you find places to purchase items for possible camper remodel in Alaska.

We use a 2018 Nissan Frontier 4 x4 to haul our GeoPro 12SRK. It also serves to haul firewood and other handy “stuff”. We can tow close to 5,400 lbs. The camper is 1800 lbs dry weight. What gets us is the payload of the truck which is approximately 1200 lbs. Buck has calculated our payload at 1000. So getting a truck? You really have a lot to consider because if any one of those weights are off (towing and pay load) insurance may not cover an accident. All of this really makes me want my tent back....okay just kidding!

Come and see! Love it! For the toy hauler types, please mention the dimensions of the cargo area. Bikers need space for big bikes but might want a small camper.

Wanted to comment that the Batwing awning is quite amazing. We had one on our Nobo 10.6 and we purchased the walls to enclose it. Made for a GREAT outdoor space in 30F temps with a propane firepit running inside. There was still plenty of ventilation for those concerned. That said, The Nobo 10.5/10.6 is a fun toy hauler/tear drop style trailer. We only took ours on VERY mild dirt trails but it was such a fun experience. The roof tent was great too. It was our gateway into trailers and we used it so much my wife eventually wanted the full travel trailer experience so we got the Geo Pro 19BH. I miss the little Nobo 10.6 though but the setup experience was much like tent camping since we have winds and the awning/walls takes some setup to stake down properly. It did withstand 40mph winds but a lot of work for that.
Great to hear about the batwing awning. Sometimes I make quick comments on these videos without the entire story. It is always nice to get a comment like this that fills in the gaps we left out. Also good to hear about the NOBO. We have had questions about it. But haven't had a lot of feedback from owners.
Are there any hard side campers like this one with a pop top roof besides the taxa cricket? I looking hard for one that I can stand up in and not pay 30k+.

I like that idea. You see them make a lot of tents that connect to the back of a truck but none that go inside the bed. Well, at least none that I know of
I prefer side-slide kitchen that's usable from inside or outside.
Me too, but nobody seems to make that anymore. The last I remember seeing was from the old Apache hard sided pop-ups from the 70s. There is a European model called the Carapate that does it today. But for some reason everyone's seems to be slide out use only, no indoor option.
The Knaus YAT (Youth Activity Trailer) launched years ago was a far better design for the dual roles of hauling vehicles and camp living!
Knaus made a positive effort to attract younger buyers whom wouldn't ordinarily consider buying a caravan/travel trailer/hauler by giving their YAT a modern 'industrial chic' style, tough, capable and different!
That this was aimed at the rather staid (at that time) European market made it even more remarkable!
The huge rise in popularity of cargo trailer camper conversions shows that buyers want vehicles that can take harsh treatment rather than having a set of knobbly tyres and a wrap featuring mountains, rivers, etc.
The comment about preferring a hatch over a rear traditional galley for simplicity is valid. However, it eliminates the rear cargo door and thus the toy-hauling capability. As for the height, I’d rather be able to walk around crouched than not walk around at all like in most teardrops.

Unfortunately not. I thought we would be seeing more. The only other route I’ve been seeing is converted cargo trailers. Or tent trailers like a jumping jack, Sylvan sport go, etc.

What are your thoughts regarding longevity/ durability of aluminum cage construction vs a full fiberglass shell?
You know in my mind I consider them to be pretty equal. The only thing I would ask the manufacture about is materials used on the interior. Meaning, if there was a leak you can be rest assured that the bones would stay intact as they are aluminum, not wood. But because there are seams on this type of trailer you want to be sure the materials used for cabinets, interior walls, etc are not easily damaged by water. But, again if they were, it would be a much more simple repair than structural damage. Hope this helps. So I think as long as you keep an eye on your trailer I think they would last equally long. At this point it really comes down to the manufacturing process. Basically are they considering high and frequency vibrations and have they taken the necessary precautions to ensure everything holds tight for the next 20 years.
@@PlayingwithSticks looks like the Luna is azdel, the Pursue is 3/8 plywood. I’m used to maintaining trailers and like the price of the Pursue but the fiberglass exterior, rear galley and azdel are tempting on the Luna.
Why does the awning go over the tongue? Why does it not the other way over the doors where it would make most sense.

Unfortunately it does not. However there is ample room on the floor to spread out multiple people. I would bring my inflatable camping mattress with me for this trailer for those situation‘s
Pulling an Explore w/a 4cyl Matrix is a review I'd like to see.
I miss our Matrix! It can definitely tow a Scamp. But an Explore, probably not the right vehicle for the job.
