I really just like big twist living yarn texture but i agree that the pride collection isn't the most accurate. I think they might be trying to make it more "subtle" pride themed than the straight up correct flag color order like how they dont name them after the flags also. Who knows tho 💚

I made a hexagon cardian with the lesbian yarn and my mom told me it was "nice fall colors" 💀 she means well, she just doesn't know the flag colors. But yeah, it's definitely more "subtle" than a literal flag.

I’m very happy that Big Twist did the pride collection. I don’t even care that the colors aren’t “accurate” to the flags; I’m happy for the representation. It also helps folks who are not out or are not in a safe place to be out. I bought the ace colors not knowing it was a pride collection but thinking it “hey those are ace colored!” It wasn’t until I saw another video talking about the yarn that it clicked. It’s subtle. It’s good yarn. It’s good representation. It doesn’t need to be literal to the flags. They got the colors right. I’m using the ace yarn for a hexagon cardigan and it looks so good. I wish people wouldn’t nitpick on the order of the colors.

I was the same! At the time when I first saw them, they had trans, pan, and gay/rainbow, so I chalked it up to coincidence. But when they restocked with ALL of them, I was like, okay, this is definitely on purpose LOL. I love it :) And the subtleness works! I've had family members compliment the bags I've made with them who would definitely not if they knew otherwise x'D

I feel like these skeins are MADE for scarves. Like when you work up a nice long scarf, it implies all of the colors and has this weird feathering into the other colors. Not a dedicated flag, but still has the spirit... Probably best for skinny long projects, anything too wide might lose the pattern entirely.

Exactly. Depending on what you’re making, the color changes will probably look better in a more random way. If you wanted to make an actual flag stipe it would be easier to use different skeins of the solid colors.

I wish the colors were a bit more even at least, even if not the exact flags. I made a bucket hat with the trans flag yarn and there was so little white, it almost looked like there was an issue with the yarn dyeing. The white didn’t feel intentional because it was about 5% of the hat with the rest of it pink and blue. Noticing the same issue as I use the yarn based on the ace flag, hardly any white at all.

I mean, to me, of course the yarn isn’t going to work up into the exact look of the flag, if you buy “American” red white and blue yarn, it doesn’t work up into the flag. The whole thing is about the colors included not the fact that they straight up turn into a flag. If someone wanted that they could setup their own pattern to do it. It’s not on the yarn. Not everyone wants to have a flag. This has more subtlety and therefore appeals to a larger audience and therefore might sell more. Some people might buy that yarn just for liking the colors in it. I don’t think the way these work up is a problem imo.

    • @meganlaynecrafts

    • @testosteronic
      @testosteronic 2 месяца назад

Yeah, and if the yarn did follow the flags in the proportions and order the colours were in, most ppl would still make projects that dont actually result in a flag pattern. I think the expectation of the dye following the general order and proportions of the flags is pretty reasonable. And how would you make yarn that would work up into a flag that has stars in the top left corner? That would be the most specific yarn for one set of instructions to be followed perfectly, the American flag is not a good comparison when we're talking about simple striped flags.
Anyway, expecting the yarn dye to actually follow the flag they're inspired by =/= wanting a flag in your final work

As someone who has used all their Pride yarns, I was very hype to hear your thoughts! I love how soft and stretchy it is, and the colors are so vibrant. I don't mind so much that the colors go back and forth. But I DO mind that the color amounts are inconsistent. With every skein, one color always shows up less than the others, and it's frustrating. And for the ace and enby, the white and yellow parts have a lot of dye stains, which I don't like either. I still really like them though, but if they could touch them up a little, put a little more effort and care into them, they'd be perfect. Cheers for the video! ❤ Happy Pride! 🌈

As a member of the LGBTQIA (Bi, Demi, Ace) I totally agree they need to do it book right but at the same time as an avid crocheter I understand that yarn is 100% dependant on what you are making, using the same color lot, even if the colors are completely dyed the same and in the same order, a granny square will look different to a double crochet or any other stitch blanket so there really is no way for the creator of the yarn to make it 100% accurate for everyone yk? Yarn is yarn so IMO getting really worked up about them not being accurate to our flags isn't a good thing yk?

This yarn is produced in Turkey, a conservative country. Joann orders yarn, but doesn’t own the manufacturing process. Nowhere has Joann claimed these colorways will replicate the flags. This is really inexpensive yarn produced in a country not known for its sensitivity to the LGBTQ+ community. If we were truly community -supporting, we’d stop buying yarn originating in homophobic countries like Turkey and China, don’t cha think?

I kinda see these as color representations, like sports team colors, or Hogwarts school colors. Even the red, white, and blue is often (in the USA) just assumed to represent the American flag (probably Union Jack in Britain). HOWEVER, I got some skeins of the rainbow for a top and my dye lot was not great. Looking at the skein, it looks great, but after crocheting, the reds are on the burgundy side, the yellow and orange has a bit of brown (so, mustard and pumpkin), the green is just a touch on the forest side, and the blue is just a little navy. It's so, SO faint, but it's enough to look a bit more circus clown than the LGBTQ ally I was going for. 😢 I hope your dye lot is better and can't wait to see what you do!

  • @sealpup9341
    @sealpup9341 2 месяца назад

I've tried two skeins of the gay pride yarn and my issue was that the color order swapping back and forth!
Like, example, it went red, orange, red, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, green, yellow, green, blue, green, blue, purple, blue, purple. etc!
Like they dipped back into the previous color after swapping, same issue that you had!
It's a little frustrating because i was just trying to make a cute little gay pride fidget slug and the colors kept pooling strangely because of that. I'm a bit picky, and I'm not extremely used to the concept of having yarn that specifically goes in an order but i wonder if it's really that difficult to just make a gradient that just works red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple??
I tried the non binary colors as well and they had the same issue, the color would kindof "bleed" back into the color from before for just a few stitches.
I'm not concerned with flag color order because of subtlety but it was more like if a color is going to change, why does it "flicker" back to the previous color?
I ALSO had issues with all the skeins I've used so far with them just cutting and tying the yarn together and it totally messes up the gradient. I had to cut and do a Russian join for the rainbow because it was just SO noticeable!!!
I really liked the texture of it for smaller stuff but I couldn't imagine having that many color changes so quickly for a large project. Super fun for small little amigurumi though!
Nice video though, the fact that you made a shirt with one just to see how quick the colors changed really helped me make decisions on what I'd like to do with the rest of my yarns from this line. Thank you!

theres two different versions of the lesbian flag, one has just 5 colours and its the one i focus on for like, projects using the flag, cause 7 colours is A LOT to fit into a project, and colourmatch. Most pride stuff that references flags doesn't take them 1:1 afaik, and the bi one definitely has very bisexual lighting vibes. Flags are really more used as colour templates for a lot of things, just like rainbow stuff isn't always perfectly proportioned and in perfect order (my favourite colour purple always gets the least amount of space!!) I've also never seen varigated yarn that was perfectly consistent, it kind of feels like you want this yarn to be self striping instead. I'm pretty happy with this collection, the yarn is soft and not too expensive, and it works up beautifully with lacey projects. I don't love how varigated yarn comes out in very solid projects, and the complex nature of pride flags makes these yarns come out pretty whacky in SC solid proejcts, so I've been sticking to mostly lacey stuff that spreads out the colour transitions and obfuscates the unpredictable colour transitions.
I do appreciate this review, whether I agree with your conclusions or not, its nice to see how they all crochet up. My best friend is making me a lesbian granny square cardigan for my birthday this year (also in pride month) and I specifically asked she not use this collection, and instead buy the colours separately so that she could stripe them hereself. I really like this collection for a more subtle varigated pride, but I think the lesbian and nonbinary colourways are two of the best from this collection, so I understand how we'd have different conclusions. I've been thinking of getting some of the trans colours, to make my girlfriend the same butterfly vest I'm making myself, and this video is so helpful just to see how the colours crochet up, although admittedly i've already seem some projects made from your patterns that my best friend made out of that colourway.

i agree with you when it comes to these yarns! LOVE the texture and concept, but i wish the color changed more quickly and consistently. i bought it hoping to make scrunchies to hand out at pride, since i hate using individual yarns for each color on small projects. however, it’s impossible to get all of the colors for the rainbow and trans flags onto one scrunchie due to the inconsistent changes ;-; that being said, if you’re looking for a quieter way to show pride (like in circumstances where people around you are less accepting), the subtle names and color changes could definitely be helpful! :)

Maybe it’s not meant to be the actual flag/follow the flag but rather just be a combination of the flag colors, which personally I’m quite fond of the idea as allows for a nice blend of all the colors rather than just having blocks of each color. Truly to each their own, as I personally quite like them as I try to not be so nitpicky when it comes to companies providing stuff for the mass where it’s meant to be used by everyone rather than focusing on catering to a specific handful of people who would’ve preferred the yarn to properly follow the flags.

You could make up really cool beanies with two strands (from different points in the skeins) and I think the pride colours would be so cute!

Your reaction to the color spread is exactly the same as mine 😂 my first skein of the pan flag colorway was really frustrating, because there was almost NO yellow and there were big sections of white that didn't even get dyed! It's a beautiful yarn, and it feels nice, but it's a little frustrating. I keep telling my friends it feels more homophobic than just not making the colors, period. Feels like they didn't put a lot of care into it.

I really love the texture of this yarn and for amigurumi, I have been loving the pride yarns (however sometimes I do have to snip out the large chunks of one color). I appreciate the subtle nods to the pride colors in these collections rather than being outright GAY if that makes sense. The top you made gives lesbian vibes without being like outright lesbian pride flag, which is nice

  • @barijade

in my complete honest opinion, I don't *want* these yarns to work up in the flag color order. If I wanted to make something in the colors of a pride flag, I would buy the single skeins of the colors and purposefully colorblock them that way. I prefer these yarns this way! You get the vibe of the flags without the pure stripes; more variegation.

Okay so Im straight. So I dont really relate to this. However, I think using the colours of a flag like this is nice. It definetly represent the flags.
I feel like it's a nice subtle way to rock your flag.
I'd also like to add that I do know a lot of pride flags by colour, but I wouldnt know what order the colours are supposee to go in. For me, even tho at first glance its a random rumble of colours, it's pretty clear that the colours are linked to a flag.

I had the same disappointing experience after buying this yarn. It’s a gray area for me. Like it’s a bit of a stretch to call it a pride collection but it’s not *not* a pride collection…I don’t *hate* it but I also agree the weird wishy washy color changes are…not ideal. Idk I still have this yarn and I’d like to use it for something but I’m genuinely at a loss. No clue what to do with it :/

I used the rainbow one for my cousins' son. I was at Joann's and only saw the rainbow one. I didn't know they had other colors as well, though that does make sense. He's trans, but I don't think he would wear something with pink in it. Idk. I wear pride stuff myself and I'm a straight woman married to a guy. Hopefully he doesn't mind that I used the "wrong" flag, lol.

despite it being not 100% accurate I think I actually prefer this somewhat more abstract look over the accurate flag stripes at least in clothing. Personal preference tho, I get that you're disappointed with them..

im currently making myself a bi pride top using the aboc studios crop shirt pattern :) the colors dont line up its moreso little sections of each color and mostly pink…but its a more subtle design and i wasnt expecting it to look exactly like the flag so im still happy with it. its kinda a bit rugrats colorblock 90s vibes. also my yarn goes from pink to purple to pink to blue to whatever…it doesnt really make the classic flag

I think it's definitely a more subtle pride theme. I'm actually using the trans flag colored one to make some fingerless gloves for my trans partner. I have thought about getting the asexual one to make something for myself, but i'm not sure what I'd use it for yet.

Honestly I like that it doesn't keep the ratios, I just want the vibe of the flag not the flag. I'm not too big on the blatantly gay pride merch personally, so I'm okay with them being just the colors.

the first skein of the trans yarn i used barely had any white in it and it made me so upset because i made a cute headpiece for my boyfriend but it was really only blue and pink :'] I also tried to make a matching one for myself with the enby yarn and I just thought the colorway was honestly so ugly when i started working it up T_T I have three skeins of the enby yarn and I have no idea what to make with them because the colorway is just so unflattering to me unfortunately

I kinda like the abstractness of it, but I hate how some colors have way more or less than others. I use the trans yarn to make a bucket hat and maybe 10% of it is white, half is pink, and the rest is blue. I also noticed there was very little white while using the ace yarn, so maybe it’s intentional if they think the white looks boring in the mixture? I’m not sure.

I don't think its to be intentional flags..... its idea's of flags.... which will sell more because not just lgbtqia people will want it so in a way they are just selling but they are intentionally making it so more people will use the colors of the flags.

The look of disgust when pulling out all the pink and purple is how I feel about the colors in these skeins 😂 I feel like they just made the outside of the skein look like the flags and then throughout didn't care as much. Only bigger items show all the colors enough which is a little disappointing.

the colour names remind me of the meaning behind the original 8 stripe pride flag. honestly i prefer them not being perfect flag copies i don't really want to walk around as a symmetrical flag. idk how to explain it but i prefer it being a representation of the colours than a perfect 1 on 1

I feel like if I saw one not labeled pride that my brain would see the colors and think it however I wouldn't be able to tell if it was intentional or not. Which could a be a good thing for some people. But for others who want it to be obvious they should have one that goes in flag order. But I think they are really cute.
