This is most likely going to be my last public video of 2021. Thank you to all of you who have subscribed, liked, commented, and supported throughout the year - Hugs and high-fives to all of you! Have a safe and happy holiday and I'll see you in 2022!
Imagine a Gothic cathedral in the middle of the night, completely dark and empty; then your suddenly hear an old clavichord and rusty bells starting to play by themselves and the low nice bass starting to sing out of nowhere. The St.Elmo lights are winking from side to side and this ghostly dark but extremely nice voice is singing and echoed back from the high cathedral ceiling vaults.
It's singing the old carol, older than the cathedral itself, older than its bells, equal in age to the oldest of ghosts.
The carol is ending in an earthy low note, lower and deeper than its dungeons. This note remains underneath forever, bouncing from the old walls and repeated by all the underchurch inhabitants.
That's such a good image! ;)
@@youtubingjaguar5082 Thank.you! The arrangement and magical singing, and the lights here are playing with my mind :)

The way you take what is normally such a simple melody and twist and layer it into something that is both familiar and enchanting is wonderful. This will be on repeat for some time!

Oh hello Stupes, what a pleasant surprise in the comment section
I love it when Geoff and his three twin brothers get together and release a banger
😁
Lol😂🔥
That third brother is such a diva! Did you notice how he hogged the camera?
I hate to sound dumb, but are they brothers? Quadruplets? Quintuplets? I thought it was camera work where he multiplied himself and re-recorded himself several times to make it seem there was more than one. Which is it?
@@AMC1623 pssst. *takes arm and walks to the side so no one hears. Pats arm supportively.*
Your right. That's the joke.
Conducter: Which part do you sing?
Geoff: Yes.
I never was proud of my lower register when i was growing up. I always wanted to sing high like the rock and metal singers I listened to. Now though, I'm proud of my bass range and almost all of the credit goes to this guy. Thank you, Geoff, for helping me realize that being a bass is cool.
I always wanted to be a rock tenor, too. The only reason being a bass is "cool" now is because of folks like you. These videos could just as easily get 6 views and go completely unnoticed. Thank you for being here!
@@GeoffCastellucci my impression (also from my own standpoint) alot of people find deeper voices calming, comforting, and safe. So I think that those who come over basses that feel that way will like bass covers like this one, and the rest just wont bother. Hope this comment made sense, I just felt like I had to throw it in there from my standpoint as a woman ❤
@@idaengest4069 I have to agree with you about calming, comforting, and safe. That's a major part of the draw for me. Geoff also has a warmth, ease, and joy in his tone that can't be faked. I say that about all the singers in VoicePlay too, but it's the combination of that and bass range for me.
@@joyfulyes Glad im not the only one who thinks that 🥰
@Wayne I am one who has always, ALWAYS preferred the richness of a good bass voice over any of the higher voices. A good bass voice will literally give me the chills and make me shiver. I freaking love it. It's a beautiful, warm, earthy sound that I have always been drawn to, and it always elicits a visceral response from me when I hear it. Yes, there's a safe and comforting quality to it, but for me it's that earthy rumble. Geoff's voice also manages to carry a gentleness in it, even in his lowest sub notes without losing the earthquake rumble. And that is just completely enchanting for me.
There's a place and time for the higher voices, too. There is. And I do also enjoy them as well. But for me, nothing quite compares to the velvet wrapped in honey of a good bass. :)
I'm a female low contralto, so I sing basically the tenor range (but being female, I don't have that lovely tenor bright AND full timbre). If i had a penny for every time I've been told to force my voice up into the alto range or that I "just can't sing" because my range is inconvenient for what they were doing, I'd have a mansion on a private island somewhere. LOL. I've tried to reach the alto range... I can't. Simply cannot do it without causing injury. Heck, some of the higher tenor range is hard for me to reach! I've had a much easier time coming to accept my voice as it is, since getting into the acapella groups over the last five years or so. Learning that people DO actually appreciate the whole range of voices, including those of us on the bottom ends of our respective voice groups, has gone a long, long way towards reigniting the actual desire to sing again.
All this to say... you don't ever need to be ashamed or shy about your bass range. Take what nature endowed you with, care for it, and let it blossom. There is something a bass voice adds to music that no other voice type can. And it's the soul of the music; take the bass line out of anything, and all those higher voices leave you with a piece of music that sounds empty and hollow.
Geoff seems way more comfortable within his vocal range than he used to be. Awesome to see him constantly improve, as hard as it is to imagine him getting any better.

Genuine LOL at that matey matey. Thanks for cheering me up!! I'm having a bad day but not so bad now!
As an English and etymology nerd, the fact that he rhymed "mind" and "wind" in the original Middle English pronunciation just warms my heart. The "Great Vowel Shift" messed up English lyrics, poetry, and Shakespearean dirty jokes. Also, you can see just how much he loves this song, and I don't blame him. This and "Oh Holy Night" are my favorite Christmas songs. What a great arrangement.
epic point, more etymology here though, it is O Holy Night :). "O" and "Oh" have different meanings. i can edxplain more if u want
@@blitzpianistI'd like to hear it!🙋♀️
@@anna-a33allrighty
ok so oh is generally used as a sign of exclamation or awe, whilst O is actually a call out to or cry out. As in O Lord i cry to you versus Oh wow that is amazing.
its not a crazy difference and O is rarely used anymore, but if you wanna be correct O is used in these terms \o/
Yes, as a middle-schooler as I read and learned Shakespeare, I tried to always rhyme his couplets: love and prove, wind and mind. I figured I should stick to the original pronunciation. Not everyone liked that.
@@blitzpianistI think 'O' is one of the last few modern usages of the vocative case, whereas 'Oh!' is an ejaculation, as we were taught in the olden days of my schooling. I believe Latin was still considered a modern language, then.

First time hearing Geoff Castellucci - I heard that all the way to my toes. Wow.
Geoff has that effect on people
I love listening to this over and over. Not only is it one of my favorite carols but it reminds me of my childhood. My father was a bass baritone and every year the whole family would gather around the piano and singe Christmas carols. That was 60 years ago. He's been gone for nearly 40 years now but I'll never forget.
It is not an easy task to express "comfort and joy" coming from the Bass register! WOW you were able to capture the uplifting and welcoming ideal of the song perfectly! Great Job Geoff!

Geoff's voice brings me all the comfort and joy I could ever need. 😊❄️
We all know that Geoff's singing is out of this world, BUT
The rhythm in this is extraordinary! The mix of swing and straight phrases is amazing!
I always love his arrangements from a harmonical view (and of course the bass... And the subharmonics), but this one shows that Geoff's musical ability stretches so far beyond that! Just.... Awesome!
Amazing Job!!
I know all decisions were deliberate, and I just want to praise him for that.
I hope, that Geoff reads the original comment - so he knows his efforts are appreciated! :)
Even if he does not react to my comment in any way.... It is enough that he might read it :)

I want an entire Christmas album sung by Geoff 😮 what a voice, it's so soothing, like a lullaby, so gentle on the ears, no fatigue from listening at all (I can't handle high notes for too long...but low notes, all day every day, so nice on the ears).

God has blessed you with a magnificent voice. Share it with the world.
What I most enjoy is that you don't just "perform". You project a song, with feelings, enjoyment and emotions. You put your heart and soul into your music and it shows. I came here to say this. Geoff's joy in making music is what makes it magic. His warmth and personality just glow to both sight and hearing.
Actually I think this is true for all the members of VoicePlay and especially in their musical alchemy together. I've loved everything of theirs that I've heard as well.
This guy made this song so much better. He added such a 'dangerous' feel to the song, while keeping the same merriness and displaying his vocal range. I had no idea Geoff could get better. and then he did
Geoff's genius at arranging is front and center. If you need a detailed breakdown of why this is so amazing, Peter Barber does an excellent analysis
Geoff, I appreciate the music, from the bottom of my heart, because your voice is literally smooth like butter and just glides from note to note, especially those low subharmonics. Merry Christmas Geoff

practically for a year listening this track and "White Christmas" every week and sometimes every day, over and over again, they are so cool, thank you very much!
Your arrangements and voice always make every song outstanding, so when you announced this on Patreon I thought that this would very probably become my new favourite. My expectations were certainly high, but once again you’ve exceeded them by far! The arrangement, your voice, the drums (I love drums!), the strings, the bells, everything is just right! Thanks for turning this Christmas carol into something extraordinary! Merry Christmas!
Starts traditional, then morphs into an audible rendition of the joy proclaimed in the lyrics as the Geoff clones bounce melody, harmony, and phrases around between them. Ends with a bass underscore that gives the ground itself a shiver. I don't always like it when people rearrange some of the traditional songs, but that was a masterclass in how to rearrange without losing the original feeling of the song! Thank you sir!
True 👍
This sounds absolutely phenomenal on Bose noise, canceling headphones. It gave my throat a massage!
The ability to go from bass to tenor is amazing.
This is the first time I've seen a video by this guy, but I've got to say I'm really impressed! Not only are his lowest notes still clear, but he had a very impressive range in general!
Have you heard him sing Sixteen tons? Oh my gosh!
I'm teaching myself to perform 16 tons with his karaoke track. Fellow bass singer!
This is the song that started my recent obsession with the music of Geoff Castellucci and VoicePlay. I haven’t heard much new music to get excited about in years. In November 2023, I decided my old holiday playlist was getting a little tired. Since radio playlists are dreadful, I scoured Spotify and RUclips looking for new recordings. This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas carols, and Geoff’s version came up during my search. I was wowed by his gorgeous, deep voice and the beautiful arrangement! Within a couple days, I had watched nearly every video and mini, bought multiple songs, and joined Patreon. What a great holiday gift this turned out to be!
One of my favorite Christmas songs. This is an excellent rendition. 😊
This gesticulation is on another level
1) The combination of such an arrangement of music and such a voice (spoiler: there is not only bass) gives me goosebumps the size of an elephant. 😳
2) 2 points for diction: I heard the lyrics of this song clearly for the first time. ☺
3) the arrangement of the version reminded a little of the music of Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean) 🤔
The overall score is 7 out of 5 (yes, I'm greedy). 😎
I have to agree with You on all points.
Also Hans Zimmer is a good comparison, I love his music for the emotions he evokes and the goosebumps and tears to my eyes effect it often has and it is the same with Geoffs christmas song or the Misty Mountains one. His arrangements are something else.
And I don‘t know why but in the beginning, I always hear „My Jolly Sailor Bold“ in the back of my head, but that might be because I am old, boring AND chronically confused....

Hi
I've only recently arrived in "Geoff's World" and am loving every minute. I've listened to this so many times that I'm now hearing a lot of the not-so-obvious things - in particular, the instrumental hits during "high Geoff's" solo really add to the excitement. Bravo!
Based on the timbre of his voice I don't know if his voice is much lower than most choir basses, but his control over subtones is just really powerful
He is lower.
@@bobstr6224 I meant in natural range, and I wouldn't dare claim he isn't a really low bass, but I think a big part of his lowness is subtones (a technique) instead of natural range

Geoff this is a unique and beautiful version of the song; I always love your arrangements. More importantly though, to me, was the fact that so many of your friends & Kathy, of course, were there to help you put it all together. That is what this song and this time of year is all about. With the very recent loss of my Dad I am really struggling this holiday season to find that peace & joy I normally have so I find it truly heartwarming to think of you, Kathy, Eli & the PattyCake Production guys - Layne and/or Tony - working all together. To anyone reading this comment, no matter what holiday you celebrate, I wish you peace & joy this season and to anyone struggling along with me, may you find someone or something to warm your heart & help you through.
Damn! You are the most awesome voice I've ever listened to. Greetings from Spain. You rock!
That was such a beautiful arrangement. To find someone with a vocal range capable of doing all those parts so beautifully is so amazingly wonderful
This is the second time Geoff has done a cover of a song with a high reputation and in my opinion has completely made the song a totally different thing of its own and made it arguably better than the predecessors. Needless to say I love the song and even though it’s a Christmas song I will be listening to this until June have a good day❤️

Geoff, what a stunning arrangement and performance! I’ve been listening to the King’s Singers, Dale Warland Singers, and Chanticleer since the beginning of Advent this year. Your arrangement brings to mind contemporary classical composers/arrangers such as John Tavener (The Lamb), Stephen Paulus (Evensong), and even the great John Rutter - such beautiful and tight harmonies. The modulation from minor to major at the end was so incredibly joyful and exultant. Thanks so much for your lovely and heartfelt rendition of this traditional carol!

It seems like you had a lot of fun with this one, which is always great to witness!
The difference in range from backing vocals to lead vocal.. so interesting as it is all the same voice.. there are so many details in this to pick up on.
I love the change in camera movements, drawing inspiration from the rhythm, tempo and vibe of different moments in the song and making it dynamic.
I also really like the backing track, it fits really well, but your voice and harmonies are still the star of the show. It complements really well and adds to the overall end product.
Simply marvelous! Happy Holidays to you and yours, Geoff(s)!
So good!
