Saw these guys in the Edinburgh University Union in 1970.....something. What a brilliant performance. The music the singing the energy. A clear memory is John leaping high to headbutt a beer glass thrown by a non-music fan. That got a HUGE Cheer! And being amazed that WWB could play bass, rhythm, and lead on the same home made guitar, all at the same time! Just brilliant.
I always thought that he was outstanding and I fail to see how anyone could be critical of his singing or his music. He’s got to be the first punk rocker to bring about new wave. I totally love his songs.
I was probably there too and the Kings Head In Fulham, which was on the circuit. I saw Otway with Robin ( of ‘Middle Of Winter’ fame) and then Ronnie during this period. I also got to Otway and Barrett in Birmingham at the long gone Breedon Bar In the 90’s.
I remember watching their appearance on the Whistle Test, and was hooked. Saw a lot of Sight and Sounds. This is one of the few I remember very well. I will be catching their farewell tour {?} next year!
An criminally underrated classic. Otway, in his prime, was a very pretty boy (not putting him down, just recognising the bleedin' obvious), a prerequisite for a front man, who reminds me of Bruce Robinson, another genuine original.
An awesome, raw 'Love Song' (Geneve)...and then channelling his inner Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger!!! (Cheryl's going home).. Saw these guys at Bath Pavillion late 1977 !!!
Watched this on it''s original broadcast - thought (dim memory) that it was a Rock Goes To College show, with AC/DC when Wishbone Ash were ill and the other bands in the area were asked to perform as a substitute. Have seen the complete AC/DC performance on YT, so the Otway/Barrett whole show should also exist?
Otway and Barrett, I am glad that I was, and am, on planet earth at the same time as these boys
.
Geneva always brings a tear. A beautiful tune that reminds me of being young and having great music to get me through life.
*Geneve

Brilliant. There should be more people like John Otway.
Geneve - Otway's masterpiece.
My favourite John Otway song!

Brought tears to my eyes!
The only song he doesn't mangle live.
Beautiful song
Wot a legend, used to see him at The Cricketers in Kennington and The Half Moon Putney when I was at college. Just loved him....

I saw john in belfast along with a a few good mates, many years ago, and even a bombscare did not deter him from giving us a night to truly remember.
Otway's finest moment!!
A beautiful rock classic.

Love Otway, must be the hardest-working musician ever to have existed. Quintessentially English without apologies- same as Roy Harper.
sublime
Thank you sooo much for sharing this :)
'Deep and Meaningless' was a great album.
Couldn't agree more. Still is.Not a weak song on it.
Still gets played regularly in this house.

Hi.. it was sight and sound in concert with AcDc and they replaced Alex Harvey band. Alex had just announced his retirement.
Lost count of how many times I've seen this guy injure himself for his art!
Precious stuff...got any more from the same gig?
Cheryl's going home, or is it sheryl?
This isn't funny like the one on that TV show. The jump off the speaker was kind of amusing.
