I live about 30 minutes away and we avoid it at all costs. Crime has absolutely skyrocketed in the past 10 years. Sucks, we used to go there all the time. Unfortunately it's gone super downhill. We will occasionally go there for concerts or conventions or the rainforest Cafe haha but basically we get to where we're going and then go straight home lol

As a NJ native, and someone who works in the City, you definitely came during off season. The entire vibe shifts. The streets and boardwalk come to life. As others have mentioned, AC is much more of an "adult" destination, with the majority of entertainment being the casinos and nightlife. You should come back to the shore after Memorial Day, but I'd recommend Ocean City (about 30 mins south of AC) or Wildwood. The boardwalks there have more activities geared towards families and are even busier than AC gets.
If you're ever in AC again though, you should try out Tony's Baltimore Grill for some pizza, they have been on Atlantic Ave. since 1927, nearly 100 years. Best pizza in the city, imo.

In the summer, the run down nature of the city is somewhat masked by the greenery, blue skies and crowds that visit. But in winter, the mask comes off and you see what AC is: an old northeast city, with a lot of crime and homelessness, wrecked by politicians and years of mismanagement, along with past casino-owners who bled their businesses (and people) dry before leaving. There are some bright spots - the owner of the Showboat is building an indoor waterpark just off the boardwalk; some of the casinos/hotels have invested money in refreshing their properties for the first time in years; Tanger Outlets are usually busy on weekends, even in winter. And in the summer, when the water and skies are blue, trees are green, and sun is warm, the boardwalk gets quite busy. Timing is an important factor in deciding when to visit AC, and what type of experience you'll have.

It's nice to see you in my neck of the woods. I live in a couple towns over and I have to say that Atlantic City isn't what it used to be. The expansion of casinos in other states really put a hurt on tourism and the decline of the city does not make it the destination it once was.
Visiting in the Winter vs. The summer is a bit of a different experience as there is much more to see and do.
I'm not sure how much you know about the town, but a few places you went by are some famous landmarks. The Steel Pier used to be the home of the diving horses that were featured in the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken". The lighthouse is the Absecon Lighthouse and I believe you can still climb the steps to the top. The cheesecake you ate was probally made with an Atlantic City Sub roll, which imo are the best in the nation.
There are many other shore towns that are a better representation of the Jersey Shore and I would recommend coming back during the warmer months. Brigantine (which is over a bridge that connects to A.C.) Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, and the historic town of Cape May are beautiful and better kept!
I don't know how much longer you are going to be in the area but I would recommend going back that way and visiting Lucy The Elephant (the world's largest elephant) in the nearby shore town of Margate and at least going down to Cape May to see the S.S. Atlantus (a concrete ship that got grounded and sunk in the waters at Cape May Point) and to see the historic homes and structures of the town. We also have an old historic town called Batsto in Hammonton that you can visit and walk through all year round that's about half the distance to A.C.
Thanks for visiting. It was nice to see you up this way!

Hi Adam 👋. Definitely the winter and mid-week will affect the experience. But more than anything else, Atlantic City's success in the 80s and 90s was due to the prosperity of those times. Regular folks within driving distance had disposable income that they could afford to risk in the casinos, and AC boomed. Other than a couple years prior to corona, there has not been the kind of prosperity that can support a booming Atlantic City. People have to prioritize their spending, and for most, gabling is a lower priority. It's sad to see it like this. The 80s was the greatest!

At -- 10:50 -- I've been in that lighthouse Abscond. It is really tall !
You might like to make a video on doing the lighthouse tours. You go to each lighthouse & get a sticker for a booklet or whatever. I did it a few years ago.
If you have a frear of heights do lighthouses😊
It was very sad to see Ripley's is now closed.😭. I've been there so many times when I lived in the Pine Barrens. The dollhouse stuff was amazing!!
While getting a slice of pizza at a outside counter a Seagull flew by & sped off with my whole slice ! A policeman was standing next to me & I said that I'd like to report a 'robbery', and folks cracked up. The nice man behind the counter gave me another slice at no charge
Then while walking on the boardwalk a Seagull pooped on my shoulder, which I was told was good luck. Dang! I never really 'gambled' but while in the Trump Casino I was walking around the wall part, folks were gambling in the middle part when I came to see a staircase, went up there, no one was there so I tried a gambleing machine & kept winning-- White strips would come out of the machine. I spent about a hundred dollars the most I'd ever gambled.
You go to a chage to cash your white strips was what I was told to do as I'd never used a gambleing machine that didn't just let you get coins back, so I thought I'd get accupple hundred back....Nope! I was given a black case, then the lady was busy & took care of the next person.
It was getting late so I had to hurry to get the bus & just made it before it pulled out & the bus was full so I didn't dare open the case but just did what the lady in the fage said to do, really hold onto it & that's what I did.
The bus dropped me & others back to the stores parking lot where my truck was.
FINELY...the case opened😳 and stacks of hundreds were inside ! That $100. or so investment paid off in a few thousand.
That Christmas my mom got to go to Williamsburg, something she'd always wanted to do -- then an all expense trip for her & husband to Disney World & she got fixed in teeth instead of her old dentures.
I gave some money to my church & got my truck needed repairs & I saved the rest. Plus I knew where to 'gamble' but kept the winnings down as to not have to sgin tax forms.
    They tore Trump's place down.
I'm still not a gambler type person but if I ever go to a gambleing place again -- check the place on the outter walls-- the machines are in the middle-- if you find a set of steps-- check them out-- and good luck !
    Thank you Seagulls💖

The Crunch of the Philly Cheesesteak got me! You went in bad month, summertime best, but again ALL isn’t what it used to be, I go to CAESars once a month for years on end! 21:06 Best time was before casinos when it was really tourists coming to enjoy the beach, hotels. Husband and I would go horse backing riding in morning on beach.. They had loads of Auction houses with chairs set up outside so you could bid on items, That IRENES you passed was a great little shop for fun items. Grab bags for ,50-1,00, Around the corner was a BINGO hall where I would always be shouting BINGO as I won 5 or 10$, GREAT MEMORIES THERE and still making in casinos, ❤️☕️🐿️

AC's beach/boardwalk, in my opinion, has always been rundown and boring compared to the other NJ shores. AC mainly pulls in an older audience due to the casinos and nightlife scene, which limits its marketability since other nearby beaches like OCNJ are family oriented. OCNJ, my personal favorite, has TONS of activities day and night for all ages, and the island town itself is so vibrant. Great video!

My Grandmother used to rent a home on the Jersey shore every year--it was the family reunion site from the mid 70s to late 80s. You could see the decline--every year more and more places closed, less and less vendors and hucksters lining the boardwalk. Casinos starting to close as they failed one by one. I think it was a simple thing--there were more and more options. When it became cheaper to just fly out to Vegas, or Disney for that matter, NJ just didn't look as good. Shows like "Jersey Shore" didn't do it any favors either.
