@@lievevlindertjes.7933 As soon as you start thinking "what people want" it ends up with no substance. When love and passion is the guiding star you feel the difference.
His point on mentorship is *spot on*. I've been in that situation early on in recording studios, and the experience is invaluable. There truly is no better way to learn than to be immersed in the environment.
"There's something very human about it because it can only make a sound with air and it needs to breathe" 13:25. I loved his work on Interstellar. Very emotional and deep.I also love how he connects with his music and puts himself into his work, truly inspiring.
I have played piano since I was five. My grandmother, an accomplished pianist, taught me to read notes before I could read words. I love piano and great music. However, nothing, no composition of any kind of music, has ever touched me to the depths that TIME does. To me, it is the most emotionally powerful piece I've ever heard. I am a senior citizen, and have taught a few students as well. However, to me, I truly believe, nothing else could ever be so powerful in depth and feeling as TIME. I believe Hans Zimmer to be one of the greatest composers that ever lived.
I watched his masterclass course about a week ago, and it was the most inspiring piece I've watched on composing ever. He is consistent in what he says, even here. This video some great rules. I think 1 and 6 come up in almost everyone's video, but people still don't seem to get it and want things handed to them. Maybe you should do a video on just 1 and 6, and show clips of various people speaking loving what you do and working hard/putting in the work?
"Find mentors" yes , find someone you admire and thats better then you at something and try to learn as much as possible. And "put in your hours" and above all "be passionate" . Hans Zimmer is pure awesomeness and his music always seems to pull a strong emotional response from me.
Man, I loved a lot of these. 5, 6 and 7 were my favorites. From 7 "You have to be able to laugh at yourself. And, you have to Learn how to laugh at yourself" 🙏
You can see and know what a movie is just by listening to the score in most of Hans's work. Its almost always paired so perfectly. He really has that part nailed.
FACE YOUR FEARS! That is my biggest time or life. To go ahead and just do it. Not starting young, put doing music now at my stage i have to be fearless. Thank you for sharing.
There is another hidden rule in that clip which he mentions...LEARN TO LAUGH AT YOURSELF! Especially, when you make a mistake don't let it break your spirit.
Face Your Fears!!! More than the advice, I was impressed more from his infectious enthusiasm that you can hear when he speaks about his work and see it in his face. His work has soul and emotes without having to be complicated, though he can be that, as well. He wears his music on his sleeve. The nay-sayers could learn a thing or two from him.
For me, I have never seen Hans talk, I didn't even know what he looked like. I only knew that I was a fan of a great artist. To see him talk and share things, it's like I'm listening to some great friend who I like, a lot. Friends like this are very inspiring.
For me is #2. I've been singing forever but I recently got into producing my own material. I'm having the time of my life but because there is a "responsibility" to keep up with the quality of production, I've spent many moments scared and worried about the end result of the production and how people will react to it. Hans Zimmer is a true inspiration. I found the advertisement for his master class and the advertisement along was a huge boost for my confidence. Thank you so much for providing this video.

Wow man, I am a composer myself. This video is awesome and i soaked up every minute of it, Thanks for making this. My favorite rule was number 2. Have the courage to fail.
I m 27 and in my entire life , I have always considered Hans as my mentor. I like the one which. in interview he says " If you are stuck while writing music , Talk to the director about it and it helps. This has always been my solution when I have some questions. I go back to the directors and discuss to get what exactly the film needs. He is such an Open source Inspiration for who wants to make music.

As a composer for visual media this is my confirmation from one of the best composers I would take seriously . So simple and down to earth and personable in demonstrating the unified theory of life and music , same philosophy !!! Thank You EVAN!!! THANK YOU HANS!!!
There's not a single rule that I wouldn't take as a way of life! All are equally important for me. I wish and hope one day I get to sit with Hans Zimmer in one room! Missed his concert last month in Dubai. Can't thank you enough for making this video @Evan!
This man is just the greatest. His music is so inspiring. Some of his themes are simple. But they sound so beautiful and satisfying. Which makes him one of the greatest composers of all time. Keep being the best Hans!
When he says “i never wrote a note for money” i believe him. Even tho he makes money with writing notes i truly believe he does it because he loves making music and his luck is that he can make money with it as well so why not do what you love and make money with it. I Love his music so much! Music is my oxygen. His music is not only my oxygen it’s my language of my soul specially from Gladiator. Oh my dream is to meet him one day ❤
I've seen this one video where he said: "If people tell me not to do something because it'll sound bad, then K'll take that as a challange. Never let anyone tell you what you shouldn't do in music. If people do so, then they only give you a reason to do it." That is still my favorite quote of him,and that is also what I'm trying to do
"The only thing that can save us...is science. And the only thing that inspires science... is dreamers." "It's something that politicians can learn something from... All politicians should be forced to learn an instrument and have to jam together every weekend... and listen to each other." - Did he realize how prophetic these statements would be given our current political environment? Thanks for sharing! Thanks for all your hard work in gathering this material and presenting it for all to absorb.
Hi Evan - for me, definitely Rule 9 - find a mentor - had the biggest impact, as I realised that is exactly what I've been doing this last 12 months or so. I can count the legendary Man Parrish, and Ian Tregoning (Yello's studio engineer), among the team I've gathered around me. And it feels especially good when, over these last few months, I've moved from studying with, to collaborating with these icons of the industry!
"There is something human about it (the organ) because it can only make a sound with air and needs to breathe. On each note you hear the breath. You hear the exhale." WOW.
The biggest kicker for me is to find that Hans wasn't so great at school either. I have heard this over and over with the most famous musicians I have read about or researched. it seems that the most creative folks I have met in my 40 yrs. in music, are those that do not seem to be animated by the rigid and closed minded education systems of the west, myself included..........and this is something I have been working hard to address as a writer, performer and educator.
Love me some Germans. Grew up in Cincinnati,Ohio where all my friends were from Germany. Have been married to an ex-Miller for 54 years. Thank you for reminding me again how excellent music can make one happy.
Evan ...my nigga, your invited to the cookout. Because of your channel you've allowed me tools to ease my ptsd and depression. Making music has been a struggle due to these two things... but understanding theres others like me who just want to be happy and make shit means a lot. My nigga ... words can't describe how relieved I finally feel .😢
I believe you mis the point, kind sir. He actually meant that when he writes, he does not change the things he do for people's liking, or winning an oscar or an Emmy. He writes what he feels about the work he is contacted for. Obviously he receives payment (and a lot, by the way) for his work, but he does not works for money. Or at least, that is how I understood it.
Fantastic -- this video is an example of the best thing about the internet.... where innovative people share their views and we all get a little smarter and happier.
Super interview montage. Hans is one of my favourite composers of all time. Some of his film soundtracks are just incredible. My favorites; Black Rain, Gladiator, Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Dunkirk...... Lessons for me 1,2,3,6 and 7 are what I totally believe in and tried to do all my working life. 4 and 5 are what we are trying to do now, 8 and 9 is why we will be successful and 10 is the goal for the project!
"use the same few chords in literally every fucking score you make." Thats acutally what Hans Zimmer does :D "time" from "inception" is a good expemle or from "interstellar", but both are incredibly nice made tracks for the movie so hand down. BTW, if u want to hear some advanced Cinematic scores listen to John Williams. (He didnt make only Starwars or Jurassic Park)
My fav: #2 -- Have the courage to fail. This courage was what allowed me to create these: - The Interstellar Experiment (a tribute to Hans' "Interstellar" OST): www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/770 - The Yellowstone National Park Organ Suite: www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/793 - A fair amount of movie sound clips, which may be used freely by anyone: www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/963 Plus, I'm pretty sure the list will not be left that short. I'd like to encourage everyone not to fear failure and experimenting. *THANK YOU for your continuous inspiration, Hans.*
A lot of producers say to Hans Zimmer: "Can't you write the music like that way, so you get an Oscar?" Hans Zimmer answers: "No, I'm gonna do it all differently" And at the end it's a Hit and everybody copys and buys Hans Zimmers Music!
this video has been very inspiring to me as ive been dealing with writers block for quite some time now..i just cant seem to complete an idea anymore and at time feel like giving up but this has helping given me my light in the darkness.

#9 Find Mentors...the part where he mentions that by simply being present in the room, even if you don't say anything, you're part of the solution. Feel that I've been there in productions before..
@@JinTeutonic53 I do not think so, if you have a goal and fail to achieve this goal, you failed, simple as that. you might change your perspective and say, yeah, but the process etc. NO! if you want to belong to the top you have to sacrifice, the "72 hours awake", despite actually happening, is actually also metaphorical, you have to sacrifice smth - maybe having kids and a family for example, and if you do not break even in becoming what you want or did not achieved it this sacrifice was meaningless. The only reassuring thought might be that you tried everything. As an example, think of something scientific, solving some hard math problem, develop a medicine against cancer etc some problem that you might give your life for if you believe in it, but you might fail.
@@Nuss-j4s yes i can whole heartly agree with you!😄i tried to translate a German saying into english.i cant speak english Well but i understand what you wrote
I always wondered what 'Pulling all the stops' meant, too. When a child, I imagined people in an apartment building somewhere all pulling the drain stops in their tubs at the same time, causing an overload on the plumbing system.

BTW, if u want to hear some advanced Cinematic scores listen to John Williams. (He didnt make only Starwars or Jurassic Park)
The main rule: use rock riffs with orchestra. And repeat.
To all those haters of Hans work..
Try being in his position, and see if you'll last a week.
Your ingorance makes me laugh!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching. #BTA436 Shine

My fav: #2 -- Have the courage to fail.
This courage was what allowed me to create these:
- The Interstellar Experiment (a tribute to Hans' "Interstellar" OST): www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/770
- The Yellowstone National Park Organ Suite: www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/793
- A fair amount of movie sound clips, which may be used freely by anyone: www.contrebombarde.com/concerthall/playlist/listen/963
Plus, I'm pretty sure the list will not be left that short.
I'd like to encourage everyone not to fear failure and experimenting.
*THANK YOU for your continuous inspiration, Hans.*
BEST OF THE BESTS.....Danke Hans Zimmer für deine musik

10. Create a masterpiece, is the most important for me. If you're going to create art, if your passionate, only greatness will be achieved.
Totally agree...your passion would help you create a masterpiece. :) Always #Believe in yourself. #BTA447 Shine
A lot of producers say to Hans Zimmer: "Can't you write the music like that way, so you get an Oscar?" Hans Zimmer answers: "No, I'm gonna do it all differently" And at the end it's a Hit and everybody copys and buys Hans Zimmers Music!
Thank you for sharing with us and thanks for watching. :) #BelieveNation #BTA423 Luka

"have the courage to fail" makes me wonder how much actually failed in pursuing their dreams

The way is the destination

This evan guy never cease to amaze me, i expect yanni in the next time
