It just dawned on me as I was listening to this for the millionth time this morning, Not only the good traditional country sound is being forgotten, but there is another aspect of the art that has fallen by the wayside... spoken verse. I LOVE IT when an entertainer would break off into a verse or two of spoken word in their songs. It takes a lot of talent to put the right amount of emotion into their speaking voice when doing narration during a song. I love it! Jones did it flawlessly here.
Man I know it's been 4 years since you left this comment but I hope you receive it cuz you hit the nail on the head buddy I can tell by reading your comment that you feel towards George Jones as I do and many others do you're right my friend he was absolutely the best and he was flawless
Merle and George both called each other the greatest country singer to ever live. As we are the audience, I think we can all agree they are both the two greatest country singers to ever live. Will never be another like them! RIP my friends.
I believe that George Jones is Country music. His style, voice and ability to deliver is better that any one. May GOD bless him and receive him into to heaven.
For those unaware, this is actually the title track of George's final studio album for Epic Records in 1990. That album was severely under-rated and the label didn't promote any of the songs from it. Although this is a great song...the album's opening song, "Hell Stays Open All Night Long", is also wonderful.
I have that LP, and I've always been in love with George's rendition of "Ol' Red"... George recorded that song before Blake Shelton had a hit with it... Jones should have had the hit, not Shelton! If you listen to both of their vocals and compare them, Jones performance blows Shelton's right out of the water! They aren't even in the same universe!
Merle called him the Greatest Country Artist to ever live and I'd say that's something coming from someone that George Jones considered his favorite country artist.
Merle Haggard was the master. He could write, he could play and he could sing, he could do everything. His life was a country song. George Jones may have been Merle's favorite, but Merle's lyricism alone puts him on another level.
With all due respect to Haggard. Jones was on a different level as a singer than he was. Nobody and I repeat Nobody was even close to his talent level. The absolute greatest singer to ever walk on this earth.
@@dennismosley717 you listen to Haggard when he was younger and I'd have to disagree, Georges voice got better with age Merles didn't go listen to holding things together,
to the 5 thingys , who hit the dislike button on here, dont be coming around country music at all plz , cause if ya find fault with this , its you who are wrong , this is an AMAZING vocal , and anyone with a minute knowledge of singing, would not knock it , this is a one off MASTER at work , and i dont know anyone who could match this , and certainly not out do it ,GEORGE GLEN JONES , was the greatest country singer/stylist , that country music will ever have
pat hayes Different people have different tastes in singers and there are different styles of country music and have been in the past few decades. I like this song but others can love country music and not like it. My favorite of the old timers is Conway Twitty. I'd love to have heard him sing this.
You got that right Pat anybody that would give George Jones a thumbs down or to be took out back to the Woodshed and the hell beat out of them they must be a damn communist
Amen to that. No more of this "country pop". I hate it. I'd rather listen to classic country and The Possum all day long, than put up with what's on that radio now, and I'm 19!
don,t get any better than george played his 23 years on my radio show, biggest thrill him an nancy spoke with over phone sent me a picture and book why baby why and he autographed them wow, thanks klunket for putting this great song on the tube
I'm only 16 but I raised myself off classic country because I hated what the claim as "country" today but I've listend to classic country for 9 years and George jones has always been my favorite. He inspired me to sing I learned how to sing by copying his vocals. I'm so thankful to have George as my idol I still remember the day he passed R.I.P, I sang tramp on your street in class and my teacher started calling me possum that literally made me smile being nicknamed after the person I look up too and love so much
This was my uncle's favorite singer he passed away the day after Father's Day we played this at his funeral Fly High Uncle Kenny up there dancing with George Jones your mama and your papa until I see you again. 😪😪😪😪😪
I LOVE this. I am going to be an assistant director for the musical "BIG RIVER" in the Spring of 2012, this song is sung by the character Mary Jane, it's beautiful when she does it, but it tears my heart to pieces to hear George sing it!
His master voice speaks louder than all before him, and those on their way. His voice , songs, and music will live forever; real and genuine Country at it's best.
this is a real good song espesially when george sings it im 13 years old and i dream to bring country music back not this new country rap stuff this is country the way its meant to be
Hi, Tony. For me, George IS the greatest. I can't think of anyone that is greater, although we know there are a lot of great ones. Best wishes, Helene.
The Possum in my opinion is one ofthe greatest examples of the Heart of country music outside of Hank Sr. The 'Pop Country ' of today isn't Country. .and that's really sad.
George is the king of country music. Personally, I think he was at his best in the 90s. Country has turned into crappy rock with a fiddle in it. All these Luke Bryan and Taylor Swift fans don't know what country music is. If it don't got fiddle and steel guitar, its not a country song.
It's been a little over 5 years now American people have lost not only a great singer but a great man rest in peace George we all love you and Nancy may God be with you and may God bless you
"If teardrops are falling where you are tonight, then"... you're probably listening to George Jones sing a country ballad to absolute perfection. I could listen to George sing this song a thousand times and he could still make my tears flow a thousand times. No one will ever come close to Geroge's voice quality and the emotion he put into a song. I've never seen or heard anyone truly be in the moment and "be the song" any better than George did it every time he sang. I believe he was able to do this because he had lived every song he ever sang. He lived a lot of lives in his time. George will never know how much his family, friends and fans truly miss him but I hope he knew how many people he made smile, cry and even laugh (he had a great sense of humor). I hope he knew how much he was loved by so many.
Another great song that didn't see air time. I highly reccomend this album if you can find it. The album/cd is named after this song. Very hard to find. Thanks for posting!!
George Jones was arguably the greatest country singer ever. I think he got better as he got older. He could squeeze more emotion out of a lyric than anyone I can think of. (And Roger Miller was underrated as a writer of serious songs. Tremendous talent...!)
Yes sir!!! When the BEST of the BEST would call someone the best, that is really saying something! I've said this a thousand times but when asked, almost every single legendary artist in and outside of the genre, folks who were considered the very best of their field, people like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Dolly Parton (the list goes on and on) would say that they WISH that they could sing like George Jones. It is hard to grasp just how prolific it is when someone who rose to the top of their fields and are loved by millions would say that they wish they could sound like someone else... I don't know that any other artist has ever been so admired and praised on such a level. Waylon Jennings quoted during an interview many years ago "If we could all sing like we wanted to and sounded like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones". That quote just about sums it up for me! Sadly, the ONLY performer on EARTH who didn't appreciate how insanely good George Jones was, was George Jones himself. He never understood all of the "fuss" as he would call it. My wife would always say that "George Jones was proof that God loves Country Music, why else would he put all of that talent into just one man?"
KLUNKET completely agree. Even Frank Sinatra said of Jones "He's the second greatest singer in the world." (obviously referring to himself as best, mostly in jest)
George Jones can tear your heart, stomp all over it but you always come back for more, lol. Greatest voice in music history!
Amen. this song was meant for Geo Jones.
Ha. Good description. : )
His harmonies and vocal range in one breath is like no other. I miss him.
Rest in peace Dear Heart.
So true.
Amen
NOBODY BUT NOBODY SINGS EM LIKE GEORGE JONES
Amen to that!!!
Rest In Peace George, Say hello to Tammy
I miss George Jones so much more than I can say, my heart is so broken.
Me too love George R I .P ❤❤😂
Wow! George is and always will be the golden voice of true country music.
The BEST EVER!!!
The haunting emotion of a true master. This is country as it should be. There will never be another like George.
AMEN ... Truer words were NEVER spoken

Merle was the better song writer, but Possum had Merle in the voice category and the emotions he could bring to a song. Love them both!!
I believe that George Jones is Country music. His style, voice and ability to deliver is better that any one. May GOD bless him and receive him into to heaven.

Robert Reed... George was a gentleman and had alot of respect for Merle Haggard... Haggard was one of his favorites still living to that day
George Always sing from the Heart.

I DID NOT KNOW ROGER MILLER COULD WRITE A SONG LIKE THIS .LOVED IT. GEORGE JONES AND HANK WILLIAMS CAN BRING YOU TO TEARS .I LOVE SAD SONGS.
Barbara McBee From Roger Miller’s musical, Big River. Quite a few songs from that show which are just as good.
Roger Miller wrote one of my very favorites, HALF A MIND.
