    Having to wait 3 long hours for your front man to arrive at such a huge rock concert must have been an absolute nightmare for the rest of the band. Truly terrifying.

      Yeah I mean I didn't used to think it was that big of a deal but after you've dealt with riots I can see why you might be really nervous. Oh - and looking at it from his coworkers perspectives - the musicians were not like the crew. The crew was at least getting overtime pay. But the band wasn't getting paid anything more for waiting three to four hours sitting on their asses with nothing to do. That's extremely unfair because Axl was essentially working less hours than they were. Izzy mentioned that if he wanted to go on four hours late then he should pay the fines. Which really isn't an unreasonable thing to say. If the show went past a certain time they were supposed to stop so they'd have to go longer and pay fines for it. It would especially make me mad if I were Izzy and I was being told my pay was going to be docked for not moving around stage enough, lol. I'd be like 'consider it even when I have to sit and wait for four hours at the venue backstage and can't do or go wherever I want. Sorry but after I've been here forever waiting on you while you were sleeping in your hotel room or watching a movie I'm actually tired and not revitalized like you, lol.'. And all that extra money they were having to pay the crew was eating into their profits. I think Duff said they ended up only taking in 20% but it should have been much more. But between the overtime union wages for the crew, the fees for going later, the wild expensive after parties etc. They ended up making a lot less. I used to feel like man, Izzy - why did you have to go? But I totally understand considering all that now.

      Adam Lands -- you speak for "everyone?" Your comment is unfair and flat-out stupid. Stradlin had admitted that he had alcohol abuse issues, and, that the rock 'n roll lifestyle made it difficult for him to stay sober. So, he left the scene, for his own health and to achieve sobriety. Most rational, fair-minded people rightfully find this conduct to be admirable and laudable. Only a fool would call someone like this a "clown." And, Stradlin is far from "broke," genius -- he receives fat royalty checks from sales of all GNR material produced when he was a member.

    Lizzy stayed at a hotel I worked at here in the UK a few years ago. He is a very down to earth guy and very friendly. I think him leaving the band was why they broke up--he was the Axl whisperer--and once he stopped being the middle man--things fell apart

    • @AmandaLea-bd9pk
      @AmandaLea-bd9pk Год назад +1

      Absolutely. However, his ability to communicate with Axl had already broken down when he decided to go. Axl pulled away from him which was the worst thing for both of them. They were the only completely sober ones in the band at the time so it would have been great if he could have hung out with Axl. But he became extremely difficult to talk to and reason with and started listening to all the wrong people who didn't have his best interest at heart. After he tried to demote Izzy that was the coffin. When he almost didn't show up for a show and there were cops ready in riot gear and guns, etc. in case a riot broke out since one had before - that was the nail. I just hate how everyone blames Izzy for the band eventually breaking up or falling apart. I'll admit I kind of felt like that for a brief moment then thought more of it and realized how ridiculous it had become. Axl going to Paris and canceling the show at the last minute while they were all where they should be ready to go on. Not only did he blow off the show but he gets to enjoy Paris while we're stuck here? That's pretty shitty. Still a fan but it wasn't just that Izzy got sober'. It was mostly Axl. He would no longer communicate with Izzy so then no one else could communicate with him through Izzy.

      This is truth. There is always someone in every band who goes unsung for what they contribute to the sound and feel, just because they dont carry stage presence or their mixed into the background or whatever. With the Rolling Stones I honestly dont believe Bill Wyman got his dues. He was one of the reasons the Stones were so fucking funky. Izzy was another with GnR. GnR would not have been as high octane funky without Izzy, he's one of those guys you dont really notice when he's there, but you sure fucking know it when he's not. Thats the definition of the soul of a band.

    G N' R became a different band after Steven and Izzy left. That classic rhythm section was the heart and soul of G N' R -- the driving force that made everything else possible. • @metalhead9315

    As a recovering alcoholic / addict myself, I can understand Izzy if that is one motivation to NOT involve himself with the reunion. You need to remove yourself from your old environment and associates in order to maintain your sobriety. I know that Slash is also in recovery and now sober, (not sure about Duff or any other members) but it would still be the same people and situations that might trigger a relapse. If that is Izzy's motivation, then i applaud him. Recovery is not easy... but if it just has to do with him not wanting to deal with Axl, I also understand that. I paid for two GnR tickets in my teenage years, and both shows were a major disappointment. Once, Axl walked off stage after 3 songs, and the second time a few members were so loaded that they just sounded awful (Axl was one of those members that time as well.) I wish Izzy the best and hope the band does better this time around.

    I talked to Izzy the very night he left GNR, he rode up on his Harley Softail at the village pantry on 9th street in Lafayette IN. he got stopped by the train that was passing by. he parked in the parking lot and my good friend John new him. he said hello to him and introduced him to me.
    My older brother's best friend used to sell weed to him all through high school. I heard that from my brother and he laughed and said yeah man. then John asked him what's been going on with the band, he told us that they just played Chicago and then they were heading to Japan to film the concert but he wasn't going to be there, he said I quit". I said you quit"?
    GNR is one of the biggest bands in world right now, why would you quit? he said guns is going to be breaking up anyway, probably right after the Japan concert. I said then you should have stayed for that, then quit. he said, I was going to, but then when I got so close to home being in chicago, I decided I would just quit now and head home. I asked who is going to play guitar if your not there? he then said some great words about Gilby Clark. I could tell he liked him, thought he was a great guy and very good guitar player. I begged him to go back for the filming but he wasn't going to budge. I even told him all the fans would really want to see him in it, and it was just one more show, but he said I am not even positive they is going to be a show. they may not make it. Axl said he was tired of all the drugs and alcohol , he told me he was clean and been to rehab, but everyone else was out of control and they were not even seeing each other until right before the gigs, a lot of arguing and he wasn't wanting to be part of that another minute. I couldn't blame him. we all smoked a cigarette then the train cleared the tracks, he said I got to go, I'm heading to a friends house. he doesn't even know I'm coming. I didn't even know until I hit town. you guys take care. and he left. I saw his brother Joe riding his Izzy bike about a wk later but never seen Izzy again. he was a pretty cool guy tho. no ego and was really laid back. he didn't act any different than any guy that plays guitar in a local bar. I felt I met a real class act.

    It's just sad that the greatest rock band of all time (in my opinion at least) went down like that. Purely dysfunctional. When they were their most successful they were their most dysfunctional. I think Izzy isn't part of the reunion for several reasons: money, being in the limelight again (which he doesn't seem to be fond of), GNR is bigger than life with so much crew and staff and equipment. Izzy is one of those unpretentious, soulful rock dudes who stays true to his craft without wanting the glitz and glamour of it. I'd love to see him with them again. GNR to me will always be those 5 guys. Everyone else is a stand in or extra.

      No offense but I never understand that attitude towards the original lineup. Yes Appetite was awesome, but the band released more albums without that lineup than with, just the 1. Although to be fair they haven't actually released very many albums especially if CD is looked at as an Axl solo project which it really is since the lineup isn't consistent from track to track. I also don't think GNR can be considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time, favorite sure and I share your love for the music, but they only released 3 proper albums and one was a double album. To me a greatest needs to put out more material. It is very sad though, but some of these stories about Axl make him sound downright psychotic.

      Daniel Jackson thank God for opinions. None of this is fact lol. It's just my opinion, no offense taken. They are to me the greatest band and those 5 are what constitute the soul and power of the band. Matt Sorum or Ferrer don't bring the same thing to my ears as Steven did. Izzy and his writing is incomparable. I fell in love with them in '87 and that's what's nostalgic to me. The number of albums or other stats are irrelevant to me. MegaCrasherMusic yep very true. Axl was a complete mental mess back then. I kinda wish he would write a book to hear his side of the story because I’ve read Slash’s, Duff’s, and Steven’s and they basically say the same thing about him. You’re right that the stars were aligned for them back then. They’re older, more mature, and sober so the same energy won’t be replicated. Also about the Illusions Records, a lot of those songs were written during or before Appetite. Goes to show they had so much magic and chemistry they were able to create a lot of amazing content during that time.

    • @unwinsis
      @unwinsis 7 лет назад +8

      Appetite was pure magic. It that moment, those 5 rockers came together to make one of the best albums in rock history. At a time when most of the music world thought rock/metal was dead. Even if Izzy had stayed, they probably would have never recaptured that same energy. The other 4 were all on the fast track to self destruction. Lies was ok, but you can tell the money and success already destroyed whatever magic they had when making Appetite.

It completely defines for Me not only why Izzy left Guns but also what Rock n Roll means to Me. I hope all members of GnR see this doc because this could be the one thing that brought Axl back down to Earth fully & made Him see reality as it is. It would be great for Slash to see this now He's sober, although I'm sure by now that Slash understands why Izzy had to leave. If this doesn't help Axl find the humility He needs to balance His soul, nothing ever will. Guns were the best band that ever was & still could be. If only egos didn't get in the way.

Not saying they're supposed to walk around with a bass or guitar all the time, lol. But it just showed that it was about creating music and playing for him. Summer of 91 was my personal highlight of the Band. The worlds most dangerous band was back on road causing mayhem at every show. I think i got my tickets for the Wembley show late May early June of that year hearing the stories of the tour on mtv and rock magazines like Kerrang we didn't know what to expect for that show a 1hour set,3hour set a riot anything could of gone off but thankfully nothing did it was a great 2 hour show. Then the following week or so we got the news of Izzy quitting the band.For me that was a massive loss to the band such a shame Izzy brought just as much as any other to the table with his laid back,rhythm and songwriting skills . I was gutted i thought GNR was going to be my Rolling Stones but when Izzy left i kinda knew that was the death of the band.

      And of course, there’s a lot of pressure. Imagine staring at a blank piece of paper with deadline looming, and you have to produce something that people love. Then do that over and over again multiple times per week.
      Drugs provide an escape from all that. A couple hours of euphoria, where you can slow your racing thoughts and just exist without stressing. You also convince yourself that it helps with your creative process. And maybe occasionally it does help you draw outside the lines. The final straw was the contract that Axl tried to force on Izzy that would have demoted him to hired-hand status in the band Izzy had helped build. That, IMO, has a lot to do with Izzy's refusal to partake in the 2016 reunion. If his solo career is any indication, Izzy clearly does not need or want money - he just wants to know whether his old Indiana buddy would finally pull his head out of his ass and treat him with some dignity. The fact that Axl reportedly never even contacted Izzy about the reunion in the first place AND THEN spoke for him in the press probably rubbed Izzy the wrong way. Plus, Izzy hasn't really toured since 2000 and was clearly uncomfortable with the idea of Velvet Revolver being a huge band, so he probably wouldn't do the reunion - a huge commitment in and of itself - for anything less than an equal share of the money, which he definitely deserves as a key member of the band.

    I was in one of those crowds waiting for Axl to get on stage at the Forum in L.A. Skidrow opened on time then the wait was on. When they finally got onstage I was dragging ass tired after working all Day and then driving in from San Bernardino. I remember Axl going into the intro to November rain and threatening to walk off if we were bored. After reading Slash’s book I can see why They broke up.

      AGS 15 the point is, as Slash said in his book, he had all those people, including his own band, waiting on him while he was throwing one of his bullshit rockstar theme partys. That affected the crowd mood not to mention the roadies who had to tear down after the gig and get on to the next town. Don’t get me wrong, I saw them open up for the Stones a few years earlier at the LA coliseum and they were great and the same thing when they opened for Aerosmith. But at that point I thought AXL was taking the whole Rockstar thing too far. You don’t shit on your fans, they are the reason why you are there. As history showed, they weren’t around much longer after that’. That’s all I’m sayin

    Much respect to Izzy. After Appetite (before, too), all gnr has going for it, is the hype from that debut carrying it all this time. Difficult to work out why they cut shows or start late after all the work that has been done to build the stage and the fans travelled to see them the bloody least they can expect is to get their show. I also saw them in Norway years later when just Axl was the only original member left because I got a cheap ticket fully expecting them to be crap but it was still a great show and started on time.

    Great video and very informative. I met Izzy and chatted with him at a rehearsal studio during the time he was demo'ing tunes for what became the JuJu Hounds LP. Super mellow guy and very level-headed. Imagine you move across country to LA with your bud to play rock and roll and he morphs into a total drama queen douche; that's gotta be a pretty whompin' heartbreaker.
    My band a few years before that had Izzy's younger brother or cousin (or something lol) over to play a few times; he was trying to make it as a singer but for being one of the nicest people ever, and having Daltrey's "Who's Next" album cover hair, he was unfortunately not cut out for lead vocal duties. Wonder what Joe's up to nowadays.

    Hi Sidd. It's in either Stephen Davis' Watch You Bleed or Mick Wall's The Most Dangerous Band in the World where is claimed that the intention to demote Izzy ( 13:10 ) occurred right before the Mannheim show. An improptu meeting was held backstage, tension was in the air..so if this claim really happened that night it's not surprising to see Axl throw his mic in the air during LALD, leave the stage and afterwards a pissed off Izzy kicking the hell out of that same abandoned poor mic.

    Honestly, it seems like Izzy and GnR suffered creative differences more than anything else. Mick Wall quoted Izzy as saying that the real reason he left was that it wasn't fun anymore. Nobody just sat around playing acoustic guitars anymore, messing around and coming up with songs. That sounds like the artistic process to me. The rest is just performance, and they had bitten off way more than they could chew in that department as well. He felt like an outcast in the band he'd helped to create. And being that Izzy gave us the most memorable parts of GnR, songs like You Could be Mine, that was the Death knell right there. Anything else feels unauthentic and vaguely unauthorized.

      Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver, Slash Solo and anything with Miles Kennedy, Duff McKagan's Believe in Me solo album etc Even Gilby Clarkes Pawnshop Guitars - the dude that replaced Izzy, has a better Album than JuJu hounds.
      I bought EVERYTHING by Guns N' Roses - and EVERYTHING from the former original Members for years after. I realised that Slash was a MAJOR reason why I loved GNR. His Guitar work was 'epic' and can be heard in every Album he has released. What Izzy brought to GNR was lyrics and a solid rhythm for Axl's vocal, Slash's amazing Guitar work and even Duff's Bass playing to shine. Of course Steve Adler/Matt Sorums drums were solid too but if you go back and listen to AFD, Lies, UYI i/ii, you will hear predominantly Izzy's rhythm was unspectacular. That's not a 'negative' btw, he was the linchpin that kept the structure of the song going and allowed the likes of Slash and Duff to be more 'expressive', more dynamic. However, anyone with a decent Rhythm could step in and do that job. What GN'R lost though was Izzy as a song writer.
      The rest of the world have also voted with their wallets and Izzy certainly isn't as big selling as Slash or Velvet Revolver. I thought JuJu hounds was OK not brilliant...

    My opinion on why Izzy is not part of the NITLT tour is because he would have had to sign on as a hired gun instead of a full time member; they probably offered him a contract with terms that he did not feel honored him and his contributions to the band. It sucks for us fans, but I cannot blame him.. From what I know, Axl owns the rights to Gn'R and everyone else, including Duff and Slash, are hired on under contract. I heard mention that Duff is mainly doing this for Slash and is actually transferring some of his pay to Slash. Slash is far from broke, but he is going through a divorce and needs the money.

    • @donallfinn
      @donallfinn 6 лет назад +10

      From what I gather, Axl, Slash, and Duff were the "Company" they wanted to "Hire" Izzy, as opposed to offering him an executive position. Which is silly, besides Axl, Izzy was the most important member of the band (Just slightly ahead of Slash and Duff) when Slash joined G n' R he was playing a wanker Jackson guitar and wearing lipstick as he had just auditioned for Poison. Izzy's sensibilities totally transformed Slash and allowed Duff to play up the Punk rock roots that they shared (Which Slash didn't have a clue about) Duff "Got it" but he was nowhere near the songwriter Izzy was, people don't realize how many of the songs on "Appetite" were Izzy Stradlin songs that the other members added input to. The old folktale about duff writing "it's so easy" is B.S. It was Izzy and Wes Arkeen, Duff just added the bass intro. "Jungle" was Izzy and Axl with the main riff added by Slash, "Paradise City" was the same thing, it was Izzy wanting to write a song that paid tribute to Hanoi Rocks (Notice the similarities between that song and "Back to Mystery City") then Slash added the heavy verse riff, which is not something Izzy would have written. Only "Sweet Child" was 100% Axl, Slash and Duff just added riffs and ideas here and there.

    I was right in front of center stage at this concert in Mannheim that day. I had only been at my duty station in Germany for a week or so and this was the first big concert I’d ever been to. As a poor barracks dwelling PV2 the ticket cost my entire paycheck plus some borrowed money. At that time we had all heard about Axl’s erratic behavior and I don’t think a single person in the crowd fell for the “technical difficulties” excuse. A full on riot was eminent, so much so that the air felt electric with anger and anticipation. I’d never felt anything like it before and haven’t since. It was at the very tip of the breaking point when Axl finally came back on stage with some people towards the back of the crowd already starting to destroy porta-potties and vendor tents. I don’t know how large the crowd was but it was only slightly smaller than the largest crowd I’ve ever been in; Super Rock which was at the same venue a few months later. Had that crowd turned into a riot it would have burned Mannheim to the ground.
