    When I was trained with CITB back in the mid seventies, we were told to always have a lightly turpy rag for cleaning hands, NOT wipe hands on overalls! That's when we were using oil paints.

    Does the test include any skills for sustainability, texture coating, or industrial coatings?

    • @dominorfc1
      @dominorfc1 9 лет назад

      PaintersInstitute Nope. The test consists of stripping wallpaper off of two walls, 1 coat of matt emulsion to the coving, two coats to the ceiling, two coats of acrylic eggshell to two walls, one coat of acrylic gloss to all woodwork, two coats of acrylic varnish to the reverse of the door, line the side wall for a finish and then wallpaper the chimney breast. The test is over two days and is a straight pass or fail.

    I don’t know why this isn’t a compulsory trade in Canada. Too many people just waking up deciding to be a painter and throw their ads on Kijiji just to basically open a paint can and toss it at the wall.

      If I was a young lad I would go into plastering, anybody can be a bad painter and decorator but everyone is shite scared to try plastering a wall ... that said I love painting and looking to get into it myself as a side gig in my 30s

      Just by saying that you LOVE wallpapering, will make you a good paperer, trust me I know after 45 years as a decorator! The secret to success is in cutting correctly, and for that, the best tools are long finger nails to mark the paper, It's all about feel.

    Could you be self employed and learn the trade yourself and get a nvq

    • @thedriza297
      @thedriza297 5 лет назад +2

      No because places like home depot and lowes make it too easy for everyone to be in the trade. Id be willing to bet the only reason you are in buisness doing that is because its easy to jump into with little money. Everybody and their mom is a painter today

      But if it was the BBC it would be a black guy with a white girlfriend and three kids all with massive hair, one with glasses and at least one with big braces.

    So let me understand this, this is not training obviously, just a skills test, to be honest I cannot see the point of it, whats it for ?, you can take an Nvq if you just want a qualification, and as you are not being taught anything it seems pointless, employers want a valid cscs card and/or an NVQ or time served, this truly baffles me.

    • @jameslongridge3962
      @jameslongridge3962 8 лет назад +4

      You have to be in an apprenticeship to go through this, you get training beforehand and after

      I think that sometimes, apprenticeships do not include the course College Diploma, and this is where these skills tests may be very important. I think that this skills test is just a 100% proof of what you are capable doing of, and what you are not capable of. Anyway, you are probably getting paid by your employer to do this test, and doing the skills test should be a pleasure for you, if you are planning to do this trade for living.
      Employers usually seem to look for employees, that have served a full apprenticeship, which is made from at least 2 years. They also look for unique skills, and 2 years experience of working as a professional Painter and Decorator. So you probably have to learn and work for about 4-5 years as a Painter and Decorator, to be an interesting candidate for many painting and decorating jobs. But it's just how I view it, and you can earn £15-20 an hour, straight after doing 2 levels of the trade course in college, if you are well-skilled already.

      Back in the day when I did my advance craft city and guilds, I did a two day skill test, it was part of the apprenticeship. it was to see that you were learning from your college and from your employer as well.
      I'm sure there was a payment to the employer if you passed too. That you may or may not have been given ;)

    This testing method is to a high standard, but it is incorrect to say that the qualification is valid anywhere in the world. Unfortunately you will have to apply for an Australian version of this qualification if you go to Australia. However, the skills required are almost identical, so anyone who passes this CITB skills test would have no trouble getting their qualification transferred.

      Very true. I really wish we had the same thing in Victoria and licensing was required to separate experienced painters from the less experienced painters and brush hands in Melbourne basically any one can start a business regardless of experience or qualification.
