Why are a bunch of Americans watching a video of a British training scheme and commenting on why you wouldn't need to do it in the US? I did a similar scheme in the UK 35 years ago and it's kept me employed ever since.
they should teach you this in high school.. basic skills goes a long way
Carpentry (woodwork) was taught at high school level 15 years ago, I don't think that has changed. However, it was alongside courses such as I.T, Electronic Products, food technologies, textiles etc.
I mistakenly took Electronic Products, worse decision I made, such a waste.

Robert Caldwell it's a "thing" if you want a qualification. Training is still done on the job in the "watch your dad" style with apprentices attending college one day a week. It's always been that way and still is. Today it's NVQ in my day it National Certificate but that gives you the theory input which tested to see if you meet criteria, as here. The practical input is learned on site.
But the fact that you haven’t got any proper qualifications, it makes you liable for any injuries or deaths

Based on the fact I see almost no powered tools or any typical jobsite equipment, I'm assuming at "graduation" your handed some overalls, a straw hat, and a corncob pipe?..

6 months on a job site and you can learn most of this while getting paid. And you'll be better in the long run because you don't have a staged perfect scenario to work off of.

Apprenticeship was so long ago I didn't have to do this for my qualifications!
Had to do something similar to get a VISA to work in Australia though
People, people, people.. some weren't born into a family that had someone who worked in said trade, and it's hard trying to find companies that will hire without SOME experience. Most won't give you a chance, even if you might have a better work ethic than someone who has had experience, therefore leaving them no other choice than to try and go to school for it. It's either that or work another dead end job that you hate.
I don't mean to sound like an ass, but anyone can hang a square door within a square frame. No building is perfect.

Classic Work but they made the frame square in a different part of the exam. true, typically you're not going to take out the whole frame/jamb to adjust it to square. but yeah, they could make a skewed frame for the test, make them hang the door, scribe the frame, then go 2 mm in.
+youllregretit No they didn't The jig they are using is welded square and the lumber they attached before the test is square. All these shits had to do was put some shims in to an already perfectly square opening frame. That isn't what you will find on a home that is being built with lumber that isn't hand chosen and perfect. Its a whole other ball game trying to put a square and level finished frame into an out of square and out of level (usually both ways) rough frame. It's the same with the base molding. And I would have sent that kid home if he showed up wearing shoes like that and didn't even have them tied , i\like in the video. He would have a nail in his foot in no time and would be twisting an ankle with those loose as hell sneakers.
+Nuckelhedd Jones The jig they are using is welded out of square and the grounds are bowed in or out or both depending on which frame you get allocated. I teach C and J to apprentices as well as run and set out large construction projects. I suppose you were one of those chippies that new it all from day one Nuckelhedd Jones, the kind that gets right on the older guys tits and as a result of the backlash of that you now take it out on the youngsters! Attack is the best form of defense they say! So what you hiding? Give the youngsters a chance and help not hinder them! Only thing I agree about with any of the posts is the lacing of the boots but I feel this wasn't an accurate representation of the stringent Health and safety reg's in the UK, merely an illustration of the youth of today for the light hearted production it was! PPE all the way and H & S! We're not in the dark ages anymore!

Screw the class, hire in as labor, outperform the next guy or girl and you will succeed, not that damn complicated, people will teach you if you have good work ethics, hell, in today's world, they will love you if you have good work ethics, probably will want to adopt you and shit.
This is true. Started on a job as labourer for 2 days, ended up working there as carpenter and decorator for a month, and loads of work from friends of client. If you're not rubbish at what you do you will succeed.

Have a basic idea of the steps in the process of whatever you're doing and bring able to think ahead to make sure things go smoothly not having to have babysit and show the every do and don't to keep from hurting them self or someone else... That sounds like a good start to a good safe informed worker. I would do Ike to develop a VR simulator kinda program first instead of on the job give em a place they can't shoot a nail thru a finger or a foot while stepping off a man left on to a roof with a finger on the trigger or rip a board and then grab it behinds the saw pinch the blade and cut some fingers off. All things I've seen some kids do if ya say you know what your doing or ya got it ya get to show what ya got and if you just watched a few videos online and think you got everything mastered it can back fire in really bad ways sometimes anyways baptist by fire that's how I got started at 15 my uncle's a Mexican Mexican tho he wouldn't let this white boy have a easy go dude made me who I am and I'm almost 35 running circles around em dunning kruger kids showing up think they gonna just make a paycheck haha nah u earn that buddy.... I am interested in the details of your training rigs. Do you have plans or better images you may provide? Of course, in contrast to many that have posted here, I am a true fan in the formal instruction for those interested in obtaining a career in the trades. These people should be thanking you for sending someone out there who has an understanding of what is being asked. Proficiency comes with time but, most business owners do not want to take the time train anyone theses days. Time is money, tools are money, and materials are money; not to mention the soft skills of what it takes to just, "be a responsible employee", either. Thank you for you post; I hope that you can help me with my request as well.
Kind of proud I can do all of these things but never received formal training. It is just a hobby of mine.. plus owning a home, shit breaks.

Then they get to the job and don't know how to use a sliding or compound mitre saw, Load a trim nailgun correctly, hook up a compressor, set up a table saw, run a brad nailer or pin nailer, power planer, hinge template, trim or plunge router...So; Basically; they're helpers...NO COMPANIES use hand tools like that...The customer wants it done yesterday for the cheapest price. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but; not on the east coast...:)
I've owned a construction business for over 3 decades in the philly area...We used to have tons of great mechanics to choose from; Now; the good guys want 350 per day minumum, and the other choices aren't worth 80 a day...

i'm trying to think through how i would do the roof rafter. I could use a bevel t to copy the angle of the corner rafter. its complimentary angle would be the overhang cut. then measure over however much the overhang is decided and make a cut however deep the overhang is decided. the cut is just made 90 deg to the complimentary. now the hard part.. the corner is a 90, and it's bisected equally. from a 2d arial view, that's a 45/45/90. our triangle shares an edge with the phantom one i just mentioned. rafter distance from corner times sq rt of 2 is its hypotenuse. tangent of the beveled angle's compliment is equal to the rafter height(what we're finding), over the hypotenuse we just found (now a leg). because of the 45/45/90, we now have the legs of a right triangle. just use pythagorean theorem to find the distance from your notch to where you start drawing your bevel T angle. the edge angle of our rafter would be found with the opposite tangent of the rafter to corner length over the hypotenuse we just found with pyth theorem. i do some carpentry, but never had a class or a teacher. my dad was a math teacher though, so that's in my blood. i usually make small woodworking stuff, so holding the wood and scribing on scrap is how i would usually do this sort of thing.
youllregretit on second thought, you could just notch it, hold it flush at a higher point, scribe the two lines that define the plane for sawing, and measure with their square held to their tape. just a cut more when scribing the edge, but pretty simple. it's just not as exact.

i don't think you all understand compound angles. a chop saw will do it, but i'm a traditional timber framer type person. I can figure out the engineering needed depending on each species of wood and i can hew the tree. some things need to be figured the old way because you can't stick a log under a chopsaw.

they should bring this back in england, as far as im aware skills testing is no longer a part of nvq. some of the young joiners ive come across would struggle to fix anything with a hammer, they all be lost without a chopsaw and nailgun. They all seem to have onsite assessment, which involves them taking pictures of other tradesmen work and passing it off as theirs!!!!

I wish the US had industry standards at all. Anyone can call themselves a carpenter, and many do. It would prevent a lot of headaches on all sides.
Any one can call themselves a carpenter in the U.K. just to work on big sites now you have to have a ticket to get your site safety card.

+Neill Wylie Its a terrible video. there is so many things wrong here it isn't funny. Started with the untied sneakers on a job site where nails and heavy lumber are a real issue. Steel toed boots with a steel plate is the proper gear. And they damn well better be tied. And that kid with the sweatpants needed to tuck those strings in.
Although there isn't as much regulation as other trades its still important to at least be open to the idea of schooling. I come from a long line of carpenters and I took a 1 year carpentry course because the college was close and I had the money for it. Best money I ever spent because it taught me to not have a closed mind and take each day as a chance to learn something new. Sure some people will get out of school and think they know everything, they quickly learn to keep quiet when you give them the blueprints and say hes the leader for today with a crew of guys. They might make it an hour before they come to me asking questions or they learned their lesson. Is it productive to do that? no, but its something I like to do to gauge how someone will be and if I want them working for me. I also took architecture after carpentry and it taught me things I couldn't learn on a jobsite or from my father. I have never seen load calculations or free body diagrams on a job site its always go by the plans and the building code. This knowledge helps me catch things that could be a potential headache later and you have a better understanding of what the engineer is doing and why.
Women should always be welcomed to a trade for those that are serious about it. I have seen women that have out worked all the men on the crew, they don't dick around on their phones or sit and have a smoke break every hour. The old notion of it being to hard for a woman to do this line of work is disgusting. I've seen small guys doing crazy crap where you gotta yell at them to stop, don't need someone hurting themselves. If you are worried about being worn out at an early age you need to work smart, there are some jobs that it will not matter but its the same for both genders.
To many people flood this industry with the notion that because they watched a tradesmen for a few months that they can automatically do it and they don't need to learn anything more. It makes it hard for the real guys that are at the top because shoddy workmanship has become pretty common. Case in point if you look at some of the cookie cutter homes being built you see it.
If you wanna get ahead you should be open to learning new things, cause college boy might know something you don't and the same can be said if the roles were reversed.

Why the fuck is it so difficult to get anywhere in life when everything you want to do is bad? Getting into an apprenticeship, bad. Learning from a company, bad. So which one is it then? Or is being a carpenter pointless? I don't want to go to college but something tells me that it seems like a smarter approach if you choose something that is highly employable.

In all my years in construction, 2 things have really ruined it for me. 1)working with no-it-all pessimistic selfish sports-obsessed assholes that are only interested in pushing others down and belittling people especially when it comes to the young ones . 2) the culture of Over-The-Top health&safety/bureaucracy(cscs cards!) /general lack of common sense by foreman/superiors/officials. At the same time you have pen-pushing clueless deck-jockeys in westminster wondering why we aren´t getting enough houses build or enough young british people into the industry. Meanwhile places like china/south america/india are just cracking on with things. they don´t spend 5 years debating a HS2 line. they just build the fuckin thing and thats it. how about we have some of that spirit here?!

My old teacher gerry doing the marking.sound fella so he is.listen all the wannabe master carpenters haters hatin. The kids in the test can use power tools out on site but what they are trying to do is teach them the traditional way .the basics. Without power. All yous that are so used to the new dewalts and makita chopsaws and ripsaws would shit a brick if you had to sit this test tomorrow. I sat it in 1998 and finished it in 3 hours .yes it was easy but it taught me a great deal .

All the qualifications in the world won't make you a good carpenter. You need good work ethic and most of all you need good hands.you can tell by the age of 10 if a kid is gifted at working with their hands.usually people from a farming background make better tradesmen.

Shocking to think that hanging a door or fitting a mortice latch/latch set is considered being a craftsperson and that it is even on a FINAL test after 4 years of training. 4 years is supposed to be an Honors degree standard equivalent. This is laughable. The only decent part of the final test was the canopy. No wonder true carpentry skills are Dead.

I did an 8 week course to get a lv2 city and guilds diploma in site carpentry with access training. All i need to do is gain employment then complete 6 assesments in order to get the nvq lv2. I have to film myself doing it.
Problem is, I CANT GET EMPLOYMENT WITHOUT A FUCKING QUALIFICATION!
PAYED 4.5K aswell.

Each test centre is different. My friend walked in, got if for free (ewpa) walked out 30minutes later. They had the certificate waiting as they new he was coming.£££££££££££££££££
fixit a piece of paper might help get you a job. Your abilities are what keep it. I’ve had quite a few licence carpenters work for me who knew less than guys that worked for me for two years. Find a good carpenter to learn from. Pay attention.
