The CD Burning Sony Discman

- In 2003 Sony produced an external optical drive that burned CDs through USB from a PC. But the company wasn't willing to give up on its Walkman/Discman heritage just yet.

I really miss the old Sony Spirit and their interesting designs and product ideas… Somehow this got totally lost after 2012 or so.
I'd say not counting their gaming division it was more like 95, as they kept on trying to introduce so many media formats formats no one but themselves used, draining their resources developing, manufacturing, and marketing, and it's part of what's left then in the red to this day with the latest being Vita memory cards(total overpriced BS to get round paying the already cheap SD card format license) Sony only has 2 formats that have been adopted industry wide(well 2 that I know of anyways) that being the Red book CD audio, and Blu-Ray/4K Ultra Bu-Ray(I'm counting it as one format since it's barely different, expect the encoder chip in newer UBD players to output 4K).
@@CommodoreFan64 Oh god, don't even get me started about the Vita Memory cards… they should have stuck with their Memory Stick Pro Duo HG series and nit introduce yet another format for just ONE single damn device. The UMD was the same dumb decision when they could have instead just used HiMD and MiniDisc techology as a whole and just increase the capacity for PSP purposes. It would have also made the PSP compatible with ALL MiniDiscs and would have made it a perfect multimedia device. Even if it could have only read MDs and not recording onto them. Which would have probably boosted sales of portable MD recorders. But Sony was too shortsighted in this regard…
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 They should have not even bothered with Memory Stick Pro in my book, and just gone for the CF, or SD standards like the rest of the industry, far as Mini Disk instead of UMD it would have been too thick, so they could have just gone with a mini DVD like the GameCube for the PSP just housed in a case like the UMD.
I guess I'm just a fan of common standards.
Betul tu, setuju sangat.
Its like shoving down proprietary formats down the worlds consumers throats actually was a shitty business model.
I had this in college when it came out. I had an early tablet pc that didn't have a cdrom, so I had this which doubled as my discman. I would leave the drive cradle on my desk in my dorm plugged into a usb hub with my external keyboard etc. It def was a niche product, but it fit my niche back then.
I had one of these. It was perfect for burning backups for my PSOne due to the slow write speeds it was capable of.
"Backups"
yeah, right ;)
I can't help but notice the irony there
I dont know why ppl had such issues burning ps1 discs, ive never had trouble reading any of them (after fixing the inherent plastic on plastic lens transport issue they had where the plastic would wear causing lens to move away from disc and rest at a slight off angle) a small piece of pop can and a little shaving plastic always resolved this issue for me
@@b_e_p_i_s_m_a_n6212
Me too
@@StephanWahlen i was thinking the same thing, i made a lot of backups.........of friends' games or blockbuster games
10 years ago I would have loved to run around with something like that. I had a Fujitsu netbook with no internal drives at all, and to be able to go somewhere, and rip a couple disks, then burn them as mp3s to a disk, or watch a movie would be at the time the ultimate road warrior/geek device. Now we just have thumb drives, and that tech is kind of redundant.
Still its interesting to see these things I have never heard of, so thankyou for sharing.
Also I am still trying tonput together my trip to the cities. I have to see Think Geek for myself.
1:25 It's motor activated in order to allow the OS to lock the drive like on regular tray loading and slot loading drives
Yep, when you command windows to 'eject' it will actually open the lid for you after spinning down the disc.
In the early 2000s I was happy with my sony cd player that can play mp3s. I was amazed that you can have tons of songs on a single cd.
iPod FTW !!!
Me too, but with a Samsung portable DVD player in the mid 2000s. I would select a song to play, and close the lid to turn off the display. I didn't get inline controls, but I would instead use its remote to change tracks after putting down my backpack and opening it.
@@maxpowers2168 I think later I got the iPod nano 2nd gen that was a huge upgrade from my cd player lol.
Colin, while cleaning out my storage unit, I found my Sony Mini-Disc recorder Walkman with a bevy of old discs I recorded onto in high school. The flood of joy that washed over my heart at finding a Mini Disc Walkman in storage is something I figure you'd understand more than anyone.
Dude you have no idea how much I love that format. I’ve never gotten rid of any of my MD devices and never will (and I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting ones). The whole thing was just so ahead of its time.
@@ThisDoesNotCompute I had the little stereo microphone and would record jam sessions and gigs. My favorite thing however, was just setting it down on the curb and recording our skate sessions in stereo, hearing our boards roll by and hearing our stupid running dialog.
Since it's digital, it sounds exactly like the day it was recorded back in the early 2000s. It's like a real life time machine.
@@ThisDoesNotCompute Also, I'm gonna email you real quick...
I picked one of those up off of a e-waste pile last year. Still works, even the battery. It's a neat little item mine came with the remote to it. I don't really use it it just sits in my collection, if I ever need an external optical drive I do plug it in.
A portable CD/DVD burner? That's awesome! I always wished I had one of these. I'm more interested into compact cassette tapes, but over all these years, I started liking records, ADAT's, CD's, DVD's, Mini Discs and all the good inventions that smart people invented. I just love electronics in general.
Damn I'm subscribed and this is the first of your videos I've seen in months. RUclips is killing me with this shit. So glad I found you again and can catch up on the stuff I missed.

@@connordufault8327 oh... thank you! Now I can go to bed. :)
I still have mine from 2003 along with the cradle and the remote. Heck, I still have the box. A couple things to note that made it even more special for its time:
First, even Discman players at the time didn't support MP3. Sony was still pushing ATRAC3. That made this the only Sony DAP that could really compare to something like the iPod.
Speaking of iPods, the typical capacity back then was 5GB and the largest was 10GB. That was non-expandable HDD storage for hundreds of dollars where this device could add another 4.7GB whenever you want for 10-cents (cost of a DVD-R disc)! Of course, you could add another 9.5GB for the still-negligible cost of a DVD+R DL disc.
Next, pretty much no MP3-compatible disc players from that time could play MP3 DVDs. They were almost exclusively MP3 CD players. Since this could play MP3 from DVD it stood out even more.
I wouldn't be so quick to gloss over the Memory Stick slot. Back then the big consideration for DAP buyers was whether or not it was "solid-state," unlike a disc or disk (HDD). Having a MS slot gave it the best of all three worlds and battery life was obviously even higher when it didn't have to spin the disc around.
All this gave it the capacity of HDD "jukebox" players with the cheap expandability of the MP3 CD players, one-upped with DVD, and even a solid-state player thrown in to boot. Pretty amazing, and that's before you consider it's functions as a PC drive and burner.
It's actually part of a "Digital Relay Series" of external CD burners though it's the only one that really looks like a Discman. The styling perfectly matches my Sony KV-30XBR910 which I also picked up in 2003.
I also owned one of these and loved it. Went really well with my tiny vaio laptop.
I really only use my PSP as a DAP and use ATRAC (OGG Vorbis which only works with homebrew players) for when it has to be a lot of audio but mostly prefer lossless WAV on it. Haven't found a good FLAC software player for it yet.
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 You've got me wondering if my MPD-AP20U would play uncompressed WAV files from DVD. I wonder how many you could even fit on a DVD+R DL.
@@emmettturner9452 it really depends on the resolution and bitdepth. And how well the DAC of the player handles it. The PSP sadly only managed to handle up to 48khz 16bit. Most DVD players back then probably had similar DACs. Unless they were in the higher budget regions. 48Khz 16Bit should always work. Back then i did a lot of Audio DVDs myself which were simple Video DVDs with a lossless PCM soundtrack instead of Dolby Stereo. I just added a stillframe and let the audio have the majority of the bandwidth. That always worked on every DVD player and could be played back easily. It was the poor man's version of DVD Audio :P
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 LOL! But, yeah, I'm just talking about abusing the capacity of DVD to add some semblance of lossless audio formats to this old player, so just WAVs off a CD on a DVD+R DL disc. Sounds like it could hold about 20 albums as WAV on a DVD+R DL, though I still don't know if it could play them without digging mine out to try. That said, there's a better chance than a DVD player, since this is a CD player. ;)
Im a sucker for tech of my era! Nice video love to hear your opinions on those
the remote control headphone adapter of a discman may work with this, the switchgear for minidiscs has been mapped, and sony used to switch pins around from memory there are 6 main types.
each one uses different pin assignments 4 of the types were used on the MD walkmans, 1 on discmans, and another for those high end digital voice recorder/mp3 player things sony used to sell.
if you have a few different sony systems try them all, you will find one that works.
All the units currently listed say "parts only"... and pretty much useless without the remote, and none of these "parts only" listings have the remote. Still an interesting piece of vintage gear. And thanks for letting us know about Freak Geek Twin Cities... From this mention, I found you vid about the store from April 19.
Always finding new stuffs. Wish to see more about retro gaming or retro pc hardware
I had one of those, though I think I only bought it secondhand. I mostly got it to use as a dvd drive for my Company TC1000 tablet pc which didn’t have an internal optical drive (you could add one to its docking station, but it was far too bulky to be portable).
I think I still have it somewhere, including the remote and the cradle, but I haven’t tried using it for years.
Bits of it gradually stopped working though, the eject mechanism failed so you always had to use the little slider on the bottom to get the lid open, I think the USB port on the side also failed so you could then only use it with the cradle. I did carry it around with me quite a lot when I first had it and used it for audio on the bus, which was probably a bit of a mistake as it’s quite a fragile unit.
Man, I remember back in 1997 I found a place that stuck all their e wast in the alley. Lots of xerox gold plated stuff. Back in the day of SIM slots. Took some of that to school and everyone thought I was faking it. Yhea, It was real.
That is awesome. I couldn’t find a fully working model. I did have, still have somewhere, the same mp3 CD player you showed there in 2003 too.
I almost got one of these for my laptop. It was made for people who wanted a CD/MP3 player (using a remote I believe) and to use this as a DVD or CDRW when you're in the office.
I ended up getting an iRiver super slim CD/MP3 player that had an awesome graphical display that was far ahead of everyone else. I could basically drop my MP3 library on the disk and navigate the folder structure easily and play music by folder so it was like having a binder of 200 cds with me
I still have mine, and it's been a couple years but I used it to plug into my Samsung Galaxy book 2 via usbc converter and it still works.
You could also play MP3 DVDs with this device, which was great because you could carry a heck of a lot of music like this for the time.
Nice to meet you, Colin Houzetgowan.
I think this might have been a good idea if they made it the world's smallest DVD player that is also a CD player and works as a PC drive.
It would've been a godsend to have all that in one
Sony should definitely do something like this again. A Blu-ray Burner combo that also has a HDMI output so it can be hooked up to any TV but also has a USB 3.0 port to it can be used as a optical drive for Desktop computers and Laptops. Adding a 4K support to it would certainly help selling it. And my god… imagine that in combination with 4K video-glasses like their Video headsets of the early 2000s.
I was thinking of that exact model where it's effectively The Universal Discman where it plays all discs from CDs to Ultra HD Blu-Rays and throws support for 2TB Memory Cards. Sadly, physical media is dwindling where something like that could come in handy
I had one it did come with the wired LCD remote and also cradle. Sony kinda of miss the ball on this one. They sure have added the DVD video out on the side and maybe a optional monitor for it. They did make DVD walkmans so not sure why they opted not to on this model?
The price was actually a steal for what it was back then, reason why I bought one back then. It was way better then having to carry a separate backpack CD recorder with me, plus gave me many hours of enjoyment during train rides. You have to remember even portable CD recorder were expensive at the time plus most were bulky. If you wanted a portable DVD player was several hundreds of dollars like the 2002 Panasonic LA95 was $1200 just a year before. So was actually quite cheap for what it was granted no monitor, or DVD video out, but did work with a laptop as a DVD ROM drive.
WHAT!!!!... For years I thought THIS exact thing doesnt exist, but should. Like a CD alternative to recording Mini Disks.... CRAZY, why wasnt this sold more? This could have been a hit at the right price.
I might have been excited about this (back then) if it was a DVD recorder with video in and out. Or even better, RF in and out.
i wanna know what Collin's shirt says

Portable cd players with MP3 playback were popular back in the latee 90s & early 2000s. Sill have mine from back then. An iRiver iMP-250 purchased 7th July 2002. Portable cd-rom drives were maily for laptops from that time period that didn't have any drives. Like netbooks. I wonder if this portable drive was able to play MP3 burned to a DVD-R wirh 6 time the capacity of a regular CD-R?
He didn't talk about the most unique aspect of this device... it's ability to burn discs... or at least that's what the title suggests.
Ikr? I have a CD duplicator.. burn 5 copies at a time. its kinda cool. I use it in my recording studio.

I've seen PCMCIA versions of this, made by the likes of Panasonic, a great idea for the time, when listening to audio CDs and using CD-ROMs with your driveless laptop was a thing
Got mine brand new back in the day. You can play MP3s from DVD-R or memory stick. There's a dock for using it with a PC. The dock can also hold more batteries.
Yours is also mine. :) Just typed all this up:

Late to the video. I had one of these(still have it), I used a DVD with mp3s and you could listen for hours.
You can burn CD and DVD roms with a PS2 game console with special software. You have to be a Sony software developer to have this software and have a network adapter, keyboard, mouse, and hard drive installed to do this. This would only work on the first models. I have this and have been using it to burn disc media on the system. It will also copy games flawlessly to be played back on any non modded system. I heard this was also possible with a PS31st edition but haven't checked lately.
Never heard of this one before-I still use my Sony Ej1000 walkman.

Portable CD players that played MP3's was a big deal transitional device in the late 90's. Every one wanted one.
In 2022, what does Sony really need to make? Most devices they had made got replaced by a phone or laptop. CD/DVD players of all sorts, Minidisc, DAT tapes, Betacam, Betamax, cordless phones, camcorders, VCRs, Cassette players, mp3 players, radios, Magnetic Media, speakers, cheapo point and shoot cameras.... For the most part, headphones are still needed, but most of the techy stuff really isn't needed anymore.
Lol even within the same company standardization wasn't taken seriously. This makes it all the better that so much is standardized now.
Nice vid! Next up try finding one of the TDK Mojo series. OEM'd by a Korean company (I forget who) they were some of the most advanced CD/MP3 players of their day.
Awesome video man!!! Keep it up!!!! I love learning about old tech!!!!

Playing mp3 cdrs is cool, but could it also read mp3 dvdrs? I had a friend with a car deck that did, it was pretty awesome for the time.

Can this product transfer music from a cassette to a blank CD, music transfer to the CD?
A cd player that is also a usb drive for the computer? certainly that $300 price is expected for such a product.
I wish Sony would do a newer version of this Discman I would use one because my computer uses an external disc drive anyways.
It would have been more interesting if it would also have been able to record from external audio onto the CD without needing a computer to feed the data... digitizing it on the fly.
That's what I thought the product did when I read the title of the video.
I had an album that was 2 cd of about 12 songs each but then had a 1 cd 20 song album wtf
