BMW M3 Battery Goes Dead (Why Does the Battery Drain???)

- We go through the process required to diagnose a parasitic draw on this BMW M3. Seems it has been a problem for a while and the owner is sick of jump starting it. Problems like this exist on many vehicles, not only BMW.

Re: DC current clamp accuracy. I'm an industrial instrumentation technician and I use various types of current clamps. DC current clamps typically use a hall effect sensor. Basically it senses a magnetic field. When you use them they normally have to be zeroed before any measurement because they are also subject the Earth's magnetic field and any other metal or stray magnetic fields from surrounding current carrying wires, etc. Another factor that effects DC current clamps accuracy is how the conductor you are testing is centred within the current clamp, as that can effect the accuracy as well.
In practise I've found DC clamps to be not super accurate, especially at very low current levels, say less than 250 mA, unless it's something like a a Fluke instrumentation calibrator. If you need a precise current reading, I usually prefer to connect a meter in series, but I realise that's not always convenient. DC clamps have gotten pretty good, but don't expect super precision at low current values.
I'd be interested to know what someone smarter than me has to say about it though. Hope that helps. I really like your methodical videos and troubleshooting.
Thanks for the insight. I have messed with this clamp off camera and found it is very close to the fluke in series. Not 100% mind you, but close enough to know if I have an issue or not. I still prefer the meter in series. The micro amp clamps are extremely accurate at lower readings, but extremely expensive too.
Great thought process, Joe! Keith would be proud :) Classic Euro fish bowl haha
As long as Keith is proud LOL
let me tell you , i been running a marathon these past few days watching your videos since i'm new to this channel, man you are awesome, i enjoy your approach and confidence !!!! Great Job !!!!
Wow! Thanks for that!
That infrared gets used quite a bit. Like the amp clamp and the Fluke back up!!
BM Trouble You! Good diagnostic work Joe. I love my Fluke meters and always approach with the most obvious things first.
On my own BMWs I have had current draw problems over the years. In my cases there has always been a symptom for example my ararm siren stopped working and I found the problem across the siren fuse with a voltmeter.
Hey, I just got my home made in cylinder pressure transducer done. The thing works. I put a video up on how I made it. I know it silly to the experienced techs, but I am kind of proud of it. I powered it with a 9V battery and a 7805 voltage regulator so I have a real nice clean 5V power source for it that isn't tied to my cranking voltage. I actually got a real nice graph on it and can even see the vacuum dips at the bottom.
That's awesome!!! I'll check it out.
Joe, really enjoy your videos, just subbed recently. I fix cars also, I'm down south Jersey, Atlantic County. Question. How did you get the bcm to go to sleep with the door open? I'm pretty good with domestic and Asian cars...the Eurotrash, not so much. Happy Thanksgiving
I just found your channel. great content. Keep up the good work. I subscribed
spot on, the neat tools make the job easier and if I had them i would use them.
I was in the trade for approx 25 years and had a break from the Auto sparky thing. Now my job at the moment is coming to an end, i thought id get back into it and start my own business. After watching you has really jogged my memory and made the transition back to my trade very easy. All i can say is a Huge Thanks to you and keep up the awesome work... Thumbs up from a kiwi in New Zealand.
I am humbled brother. Thank you!!
Mission accomplished --> diagnose. Next, off to the body shop with that one...
Makes it look easy. Good job.
Great job again like always always
It’s a bmw, that’s the start of the problem. 🤣
South main auto, pine hollow, joes electric , scanner danner, guys keep me entertained love the content keep it up
Man you find lots of use for that thermal cam! Just watched that sun visor video wow ! ⚡️ 🔥 👨🏻🏭 ⚡️
many uses...
Can you simply disconnect the navigation system and still run the car without problems? Thank you.
Had an old 2001 730D Msport. Changed most modules, had to rewire runs between some, changed AC fan which had a huge draw etc. This thing ATE batteries...my F10 5-series from 2011 has none of these problems. Looks like they've finally learned to "computer" in these cars.
You, Keith, Ivan and Eric O would make a hell of a team. Another good diagnosis. 👍
Thanks man.
Nice. I really need and amp hound. That makes it much quicker. I am building myself a pressure transducer for my hantek scope. Would have had it done today but a brake job showed up.
Amp hound huh? Well..stay tuned
You are spot on ,good job.
Well well never thought I'd see you work on a beamer 😆 Great diag Joe. Thanks for sharing 👍
Unfortunately I get myself involved sometimes...
Good job Joe!
Putting that clamp to work fast. Your luck is better than mine. I ordered mine because I had two parasitic draws in two days. Haven’t had another one since I got it. 😂
I do these sort of repairs on a daily basis. I always liked using the meter better than a clamp, but it is preference. I just couldn't resist trying it out here LOL
Great work Joe, I work in a large Printing plant, we make most of the C@ke and P&psi labels
for the bottles. I primarily do the Electrical troubleshooting of the machines But also the
precision mechanicals due to their being almost no good techs available to hire.
Which brings me to my point, I have been enjoying your work on the small current drains
and the Equipment that you are using, I also do some auto related side work.
Thanks for taking the time to share your work, I have already picked up a couple new
ideas from you.
I had an old timer tell me once talent recognizes talent and that has turned out to be true.
I am very interested in the Pico stuff, any advice on what to get?
Best wishes my man.
Thanks very much!
Nice catch Joe too work mate 👍👍👍
Thanks bro!
The minute my 11 year old boy noticed that it was a convertible bmw, he said; fishtank, probably has a water leak...
I think he's watched a few of Keith's videos...😅😅😅
LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!
He's right
great diagnostic plan
Thank you sir.
I've only ever worked on euro cars, do domestic convertibles not leak?
They all leak. I think Euro is worse though.
I've got a late 80s beamer and it's by far the best built car that ive ever seen in my life. I have absolutely no idea what happened in the 90s and 00s but it seems like it all went to shit. Maybe they realized you cant stay in business selling cars that still run 30+ years later
Great video
Lucky it didnt catch on fire .
Good one ☝️
that's it joe... now that you fixed that one you will be the beamer king! the lot will be full of them! btw nice diag work...maybe you have to zero the amp clamp
That was it actually. Clamps was not at dead zero. M y mistake. And no thank you on a lot full of fishbowls.
so whats a pico? like as in the simple computer that you can put your own programs on?
Pico Scope. Look at www.aeswave.com Check under scopes.
Wiring diagrams. Is that something readily found online or do you get those from a subscription service?
Any recomendations?
We pay monthly
thank for sharing
Nice find
Nice job bro
👍👍
Thanks sir.
Nice diag brother.
Thanks!
"lucky for me i love bmws" lol love it joe
Thanks man. Glad to have you here.
Not like a BMW to leak water !!!
Must invest in a thermal camera.
Nice video.
LOL yea, right. Thermal is a great tool! And thanks for watching
Cool thx man👍
i love my amp hound
foist???
ruh roh...
Funny,I had a BMW M and never had a problem until that old lady t-boned me as I had the right of way.
Nice
That’s supposed to be there. Those things are liquid cooled 😂
Ha! I forgot about that! Silly me.
Ya it's state of the art for 2004
I have amp hound, works great. When doing diagnosis you must have lots of patients. Good work
Yep, great tool
True dat doc! ;)
See that? Thats wooder under der lol
My muffler bearing is getting loud I sprayed a whole can of pb blaster in muffler gonna drive it in morning to see if it helped what oil does the muffler use its a ford
0w20
Wher can I get that software for my laptop
Which software??
@@JoesAutoElectric the dignostic software on ur laptop
I think you are referring to the scope. That is Picoauto.com. You can buy the scope from www.aeswave.com
Clean out the channels that the water drains out from
car was hit. It's the top causing the leak.
Its a BMW so very likely the module can be dried out and repaired. Only for it this water leak could have done much more damage.
Joe, do you really like BMW's ? Id like to get one but all i ever hear is bad stories about them.
No sir, that was absolute sarcasm. I hate euro cars. Especially Benz and BMW
More light
Hey Joe What You Know ! I just subscribed, I like your channel, I do not know if you have ever seen the channel " Taryl Fixes All " it's lawn mower repair, the guy is funny as hell, but real knowlegable, after a long day of dealing with jerks screwing stuff up, an sending to you to fix, Taryl will make you laff, and learn some stuff at the same time, I sure wish your shop was were I live, Seems an auto mechanic with a moral compass is hard to find today, Good guys like you are definitly hard to find. Thanks for your videos , I am a DIY, and I sure can screw it up.
Thank you for joining us. I'll check that channel.
Yep the contents great.Could have been a Land Rover lol.
Another fishbowl... What a shock! My suggestion, have the neighbor fill it up and shove it out into the water....
LOLOL
Good one Joe! Subscribed! 👍 BMWs can make you tons of money! IMO,only technicians that are not confident enough in their skills and lack a pair refuse to work on these. If you fix European vehicles you're onto the next level, plenty of technicians can fix your average Chevy,Ford or Honda...not many can fix European. I've been on RUclips long enough to know the majority that complain in the comments section about European vehicles have never worked on one,let alone owned one...yet they are " experts " on why you shouldn't own one. It must be from the brainwash sessions they get from Scotty...
Keep up the good work! 🤙
Thanks for subbing man. I am really not a fan of euro at all. I have plenty of reasons not to own one. Of course, that is just my humble opinion.
Everyone I know that's had a BMW has had some sort of electrical problem with it.
"I love BMW's "(c) there are at least two of us.
Altenator Dynamo Courtslete & Electric Remmie / Relay Terminal Courtslete Problem, ..... God Bless All Bro, .... Cheerio.🌠👍👍👍🌠🌟🌠.
What the heck doesn't ever rain in Europe! BMW must translate to colander in English. :)
hahahaha
Yeah oh you eight BMW so much
German fish tank
I know when you said you love BMW's you were being sarcastic! These are the worst over engineered pieces of shit ever made! Complete German junk
You love BMW:s because they are gold mines for repair shops? The cars water broke?
