Hey Michael, i can underwrite your whole comparison. I have both versions and both are awesome Records. As i got the RSD Kevin Gray version, I thought it couldn't get any better. After my experience with the other AP 45 Atlantic releases, I ordered the War 45 rpm after all and I was blown away. This is what a funk record should sound like, right in your face.
I have around 5000 records and this is my best sounding one❤❤

My daughter and I saw War together in the late 90s when she was 7-8. I picked her up and Lonnie Jordon gave her a high five! She still remembers it, and loves the War hits!

War (The Group) is Iconic, I was able to meet the band along time ago when I was a kid , my dad is a friend of one of the members. At the time I didn’t know who I was meeting but years later being a big fan I’m glad I was at least able to meet them.

Addition, to the nice video: Almost all of the War OGs sounded very great and they are some of the best you can get for little money, a mastering engineer probably doesn't have to do much with the Mastertape, because the "Recording Engineers" did a brilliant job..The greatest hit also sounds great, even though there are quite a few songs included.. Example: Buy the Galaxy LP and be amazed at the sound of "Baby Face" !

The KG is spectacular and the RKS is easily a demo record.

Thank you Michael. One small detail though. In the video you did with Joe and Kevin, I believe Joe stated that to get the ‘tube’ engineered benefit, you needed to get the early ‘splattered’ gold issue. The gold disc you hold up in this video does not appear to be the splattered version, therefore you may not have been comparing the best RSD version in this test.

I'm on my 3rd Vinyl-comeback (long, rather frustrating story). However this time around I'm really trying (so far it is working) to enjoy all the different layers and aspects of the hobby: the search/hunt, the gear, the art, the sound, the joy of saving a rotten cover and abused record and last but certainly not least learning new stuff and discovering new music. And if there is one Band that is my quintessential "Vinyl-comeback No3 find" then that Band must be "WAR". WTF have I been doing since buying records in 1978 :-)
And although I must admit of sometimes having a difficult time with some of the creators/content - "War" is one of those priceless discoveries I owe to this channel. Thanx!

Very cool Michael, we need to talk about it on our monday stream. It's one of the rare moments where even I think you need them both,

    Dear Michael,
I bought the RSD version of the WAR a year ago in a record shop in Karlsruhe. I hadn't looked for the record on Record Store Day yet.
The sound is really fantastic. I had the opportunity to listen to the record on VINYL CHECK's new system last year and was thrilled.
It's hard to imagine that the quality could be improved. But the way you described it is very conclusive.
Exciting comparison, certainly interesting for many!
    Many thanks for that.
    Best regards
    Timo

45 Rpm will always beat a 33 rpm as 78 will always blow them all (of course when all well mastered)! However the sound of tube version should really be reissued! It's so warm sound, well done analog record again, still waiting for some 78rpm ùgroove please they sound so good!!!

    Michael how are you,
Ryan K is riding on the crest of a wave lately.
Kevin on the other hand continues to add so much weight & energy to his mastering.
Ryan amazing job on the recent Bad Company A75 .
Where’s Kevin for me is the perfect choice for the upcoming YES titles because he pushes the vinyl to its absolute limits.
WAR a very interesting comparison,45rpm the way to go for sure.
    Cheers Michael take care 🤙

I haven't heard either the KG or RKS. I have a clean US first pressing, though, and that sounds excellent.

Great review and shootout. I haven’t ordered this one yet, I’ll have to check it out. I love to hear these comparisons between different audiophile pressings, and to get into the sonic/technical differences is both interesting and useful. Thanks Michael 🙏

I remember the hype when you did the original video about the KPG tube version of this record but was tough to find with FOMO. I then found an original US pressing and it blew me away. That record by definition, with its original recording, original mastering and anyway you slice it, is already an audiophile Jazz/funk/type record. You would think it was done by RVG. The labels with these "audiophile" reissues definitely went after a low hanging fruit with this title but in return you get low noise floor vinyl, easy purchasing, etc. - all good, but give the OG a listen.

I really wish Chad would do the full albums, most of the songs on the Greatest Hits are heavily edited.
The albums are very well recorded and would be perfect for 2x45 RPM reissues.

So does anyone know what kind of tape they used for mastering this? Did they cut the original master tapes of the albums and put together the songs for this compilation? Or did they use copies of the album masters to assemble this?

This album contains severely truncated versions of classic extended vibe songs that truly blossom only at their intended extended lengths. Sorry, big pass as the original full studio lps (non greatest hits) shine brightly with these tunes along with equally gorgeous deep cuts that groove as well.

surprised they wouldn't use the added space on the 45 to use the extended cuts..

By the way as i don't know how to contact you, i wanted to know if you had by chance tested a copy of the Beatles and Esher demos box set reissued in 2018 0602567572015, i seriously think the master is (bad) biased by a low end artificial boost?
