Swimmer only. You didn't include my favorite freestyle drill, the catch up drill. Best, for me anyway, for emphasizing body rotation, extension, and linking them together. I have seen so many suggest the skulling drills, but to me, that only seems to apply to the breast stroke. I guess it helps some get the 'feel' of the water. Some pick up on that without thinking, and some will never get it.... For fins, I have no clue as to why the traditional 'frog feet' are so popular. Mostly because we don't have flat feet like frogs or ducks. Our feet are 3D, and the side of the foot is used for propulsion, not the toes. Only 'ergonomically correct' fins are the positive drive fins from Finis. There are some 'surf rescue fins also. I do a lot of catch up drill and kicking drills with the snorkel. Never got the fist drill....
Thanks. I love the catch up drill, but this is one I prefer to coach one on one as some swimmers can develop a long pause in their stroke as they wait for the recovering arm. But I agree, it's great for linking a lot of aspects of frontcrawl together. The sculling drills are great for those without a swim background to get the 'feel' for the water as you mentioned. It's always difficult to select the 'best 5 drills' out of so many good ones though. :D Thanks for your comment. 🙏🏻
You might consider scheduling a session or two with a poolside coach who can give you some key areas that you need to focus on. Alternatively, have someone video you for self-assessment. Developing your stroke with proper technique will pay dividends later. Good luck!
You don't really need your own physical teacher. All you need is self awareness and long time training. If you can catch what makes you be better and do the same thing again and again until you 'get' something better then repeat.
