fyi: there is a mountain on the island of Kauai in Hawai'i called 'sleeping giant'. it looks similar to Tefiti - a large person lying down on their side...
Actually it’s based on Polynesian culture as a whole. But it is largely Hawaiian, Māori , Samoan, Tahitian, Fijian being the stronger influences. The main cast are mostly Hawaiian and Māori aside from Dwayne Johnson. John Musker and Ron Clements literally gave the script to Taika Waititi (Also Māori) to craft its foundational underpinnings. The second film involved the directors visiting Iwi (which are tribes I believe) in New Zealand. So whilst certain cultures play a bigger role in terms of influence, overall it’s not just one particular culture, but an amalgamation of all the cultures of Polynesia presented ambiguously in the film.
Hawaii connections: Auli'i Cravalho was 14 when got cast and is from Hawaii. She graduated from Kamehameha schools on O'ahu. the voice of the mother Nicole Scherzinger is from Hawaii, as i the Rock's mother...
"Innocent Warrior" is one of mt favorite Disney opening tracks, and "Know Who You Are" is one of my favorite final tracks. Really wish the team for the sequel didn't only have 10 months to rework a show into a film (and by that time, it's mostly in the animation stage, anyway).
@bribohannon10 Planned as a show since 2020. However, in January of THIS YEAR, Disney told the team it was gonna become a film, so they had to scramble to meet the November deadline, particularly since, for a movie, the last 12 months are largely focused on the final stage: animation. The film was announced to the public 1 month later in February.
@bribohannon10 Yep. 10 months doesn't really give a lot of time to work out the songs and plot when you have to move onto animating it; they just got to polish what they already had.
The casting of this movie is so great. Auli'i was an amazing find. And Chris Wallace (Washington from Hamilton) and Nicole Sherzinger play her parents. And of course Alan Tudyk committing 100% to a stupid chicken.
I haven't seen much from anyone yet, but I personally have high hopes for the music in Moana 2!! I'm not sure if you're familiar with Barlow and Bear (Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear), they are a writing duo who released an unofficial Bridgerton Musical score (may be official soon??) during the pandemic, and they have been asked to be a part of a lot of projects coming up in the musical/musical theater world. They are the main writers of Moana 2, with help from Lin Manuel Miranda, and the approval and support of the represented cultural group(s). They stated in an interview that it was a very collaborative and easy-going process. They would get part of the script to set the tone that the song needs to be, then they right from the character's perspectives, consulting real pathfinders to ensure accuracy!! Everything I have heard from them is great, and Lin was still part of it, so I don't think we have much to worry about!!
Actually Moana is about all polynesian people, traditions, legends and culture, the producers went to french polynesia, Samoa ect... to learn about parts of our history and culture and to reproduce the landscapes and vegtation of our islands
I thought interviews they mentioned there is a mix of various Polynesian cultures, so their make believe island is somewhere in Polynesia but their community isn’t specifically Hawaiian, Samoan, or Māori, etc.
I really want to hear her thoughs on the songs for the second movie it have watched it myself so I know what I like but would like to see a pro break them down
How did I not notice you live in Hawaii? I thought you were in LA. That’s awesome! Both my parents lived there for a time, before they met, when my dad was stationed in Kaneohe for a time, and so was my late grandfather on my mother’s side thirty years prior, iirc.
This may seem super different. But could be a “vocal coach reacts to all Alan Tudyk voice roles?” Pretty please. I know voice acting is different. But he’s so impressive with what her gets he voice to do.

I believe they're actually Somoan, Hawaiians have stated they couldn't understand the native language. Also The Rock is Samoan.
The directors researched Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti for this, but I'd also bet Samoan.
Also the boats are Micronesians . There wasn’t any more Polynesia sailors so the had to go to Micronesia to learn
she’s pretty much mixed in with a lot of different Polynesian cultures, but id also say dominant samoan, tokelauan and tahitian.

@reginarichards6261 Just gonna point it out: Taika said that the farthest he got with his script was "Exterior: Ocean."

I hope you saw the after credit scene - it's not long, it's not important, but it is fun :)
This film combines a little bit from each of the polynesian cultures!

Moana 2 is amazing! Auli'i Cravalho delivers again just as she did in this movie
The casting of this movie is so great. Auli'i was an amazing find. And Chris Wallace (Washington from Hamilton) and Nicole Sherzinger play her parents. And of course Alan Tudyk committing 100% to a stupid chicken.
His name is Christopher Jackson not Chris Wallace
I made it to the premiere as soon as I received the notification... when I was listening to Tulou Tagaloa!
I resonate so much with Moana❤

If you are in Hawaii, then everyone will know the music of Opetai'a Foa'i and Te Vaka, responsible for much of this music.
