even with the A7RV? i have the 200-600mm with the A7RV and through experiments concluded that the 1.4x gives no extra detail/sharpness even at the same ISO. The sharpness of the lens+teleconverter combination is not good enough for the 61MP sensor, so there is no additional gain using teleconverter.
@@DanielSymphoniesShort answer is yes (At least with my 50MP A1) I never use the 1.4xTC on the 200-600 it just suffers to much in image quality (like you said) and off course F9 I'm not a fan of. BUT the 300GM takes both the 1.4 TC and 2X exceptionally well. I was very surprised with the 2X. It's the first lens I have ever felt I have gotten good AF and IQ with the 2x. here is a summary of my experience with all the big primes. 400 GM F2.8 - 1.4 TC = good IQ and AF hitrate 80-85% // 2x TC = Not so good IQ (Lots of CA) and struggling AF. 600GM F4 - 1.4TC = Very good IQ, AF hitrate about 85-90% so little loss in AF. // 2X TC = Still good IQ. But here the AF starts to lagg behind. So almost never use 2X. 300GM F2.8 - 1.4TC = Can not see any loss in IQ. AF just as good as with bare lens. // 2X TC = Still very good 90-95% IQ. AF maybe a good 95%. The 300GM just takes both 1.4 and 2X really well. Much better than the other big primes, from Sony. Of course all of my testing is done with the Sony A1.
@@DanielSymphonies I just sold my 200-600. The 300 blows it away in every way possible. I’m shooting with a a9 and a7r V. I have both teleconverters and have had great results with them. I sold the 200-600 because I have yet to pick it up since receiving my 300. Hope this helps

I have tested my copy extensively against the 200-600G (on my A1, so only 50MP) and while the IQ suffers with the TC2, it is still at least marginally better than the naked 200-600. Which is very usable and pretty much the only combo that even focuses decently with an TC2.

200-600 user here! i watched your videos before buying it! i also had the Sigma 500mm f5.6 sport. and then I was waiting for you to buy the 300mm 2.8 lens because it's my next target. now you have one! congratulations!
You felt the same happiness when I was at our local pond and noticed in just 4 hours that I could photograph big eagles, ospreys, kingfishers, swans, ducks, cormorants and a lot others in one small pond here and it is just 5 minutes away from my home. I was thanking god that I was allowed to experience all this in just 4 hours. I came home with about 500 photos with ospreys eating their caught fishes, an eagle bringing fish to his baby and kingfishers perching. I used the Sony A7R IV and the Sony 200-600 5.6-6.3. It was such fun and now I have a new habitat for wildlife photography and I will check it out in all seasons of the year now. Wish you fun with your perfect combination of equipment. By the way I was in Sweden before this experience and did not make so many photos there like I did here at the pond in 4 hours. But I love the landscape and animals and the people in Sweden. Sweden is such a great country.
Awesome video. This lens works well with the 1.4 and 2x tele-converter. The weight distribution of this lens is so well thought out and shooting with this lens and camera is flexible and easy.
That one is on my shopping list. Interesting fact. Take the APSC mode of the RV and pop it into the compact Sony body and you have the A6700. Same number of pixels, same ISO performance, faster FPS, better video capabilities but with the exact same AF performance...at less than half the price. That is what I use on my Sigma 600mm for birds with great results. Not as good for sports (which is what I shoot professionaly), but I have the A9 for that. Love your video, as per usual.
I have been dreaming of this lens for some weeks. I'm thinking of replacing my 200-600 GM, because of you know, weight.. I have the 1.4X teleconverter and i've heard the 300 GM is excellent with it, even the 2X. I cant wait to see you test it with a converter, comparing it to the 200-600mm. Great video.
Nice video! I've had this lens for about 5 months now and love it! I use it quite a bit with both the 1.4 and 2.0 TCs and find the IQ to be outstanding! Interesting that you shot with the A7RV. I have this camera body as well as the A9 III but in all honesty have been using the A9 III much more. I need to shoot more with the A7RV and your video inspired me. Funny that you mention the 200-600. Because I have that lens also and shot with that and my A7 IV for about 3 years before I traded my A7 IV for the two bodies I currently have. I still love my 200-600 but to be honest, since I have had the 300 GM I have hardly used my 200-600 because I love this lens so much. For me handheld has always been my style of shooting and the 200-600 was rather heavy after a full day of shooting. After getting the 300 I noticed the difference right away and it has been so nice shooting with it. Plus like you stated, the quality of the images using this lens has been outstanding! I was a little hesitant as to how it would work with the TCs but after shooting it for 5 months now I can confidently say that the IQ with both is unbelievably good! I look forward to seeing your subsequent reviews on this lens. For many of us who are wildlife photographers we've always craved that 600 prime but were hesitant to spend that much money on one lens! Well this really gets you almost there with the incredible images it can capture at half of the price! Keep up the good work. Your videos are very relaxing to watch. I can highly recommend the x2TC for it, especially for taking videos. You can go crop mode and then even go for the power zoom in 4k and get really nice footage at 1200mm. One of my sharpest lenses ever. And it’s as sharp with the x2 TC as my 200-600. I prefer it for closer subjects as well. Enjoy it. (I know you will love this beauty)
Great video Olle ,that 300mm F2.8 is a beasts local camera shop where i bought my A74 and 200-600mm from had their staff photographer show me what it could do with it on a A74, there was a golf course a 2 minute walk from the store with ponds and lots of trees and he took photos and i was surprised at the difference in the clarity and sharpness of the photos with it, it is one amazing lens, it must have been amazing to use at the summer olympics in France with the new A93, you will have fun with it with a tele converter 👍

number 1 accessory you should get is a Zemlin lens cap for that front element!! ....you might also want to check out some lens skins from Lifeguard or Alphaguard...
Once you shoot with one of the fast super telephoto primes nothing else matches up. I used to shoot with Sony’s old A-mount 300mm f2.8, which gave great results and again allowed extreme cropping. It also weighed a kg more than the new lens. I’m excitedly waiting for a (used) Sony 400mm f2.8 to arrive.

The quality of these primes is so high that using the teleconverters still gives excellent results if you need a bit more reach. I find the A7RV an excellent wildlife camera, as the cropping ability is astounding.
What a great pleasure to see 1. a new video of yours and 2. the same combo I used all summer to shoot vultures, eagles and hawks! I used the A7RV with 20-70mm and let me tell you all people, it’s insane how you can space between 20mm and 900mm with just two lenses in the smallest, lightweight wildlife camera bag ever! 2,5kg for the entire rig! Yeah you read it right, 900mm, that’s because the 300gm has such an unsurpassed quality that you can weld the 2x TC and forget every previous problems about downgrade in sharpness, microcontrast and overall quality. You have a 600/5.6 top notch, and with the 26mpx A7RV crop, you can easily reach stunning 900mm to crop a little bit again! I was not a a cropping fan, but this combo change my mind so fast. It’s time for a 3x tc Sony! Can’t wait to see other calm, contemplative, wild video with this lens. Congrats for the purchase, you won’t regret it!
@@richardfink7666 I disagree with the term "good", I prefered "better". Cause its AF compensate the 20/30 fps of other brands. Not the A1/9, they're the best
@@richardfink7666 if we're not talking about A1 and A9, I surely would choose A7RV AF reliability instead of a Canon R5/Nikon Z8 burst rate because I don't care about wing position if they are blurry. Again, I agree if you put an A1 in the conversation.
2x teleconverter is meant to work really well with that too, you don't lose nearly as much light as on other lenses thanks to its 2.8, so might be worth trying it at 600mm F5.6

Hey Olle glad to see you bought a new lens for your lineup. The 300 f/2.8 looks like a great lens, the pictures and videos you've already taken with it looking crisp. I like the look and I'm also a fan of showing the animals in their natural environment as you can see at 8:37 rather than “always” closeup portraits... they are also pretty nice to capture don't get me wrong here 🤙😉
I was very close to buying the Sony 300mm 2.8 GM with 1.4x and 2x, but in March 2024 I got the excellent Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens. I still hope that Sony will make more high end prime tele Lenses, like fx 300mm 4.0, 400mm 4.5, 500mm 5.6 AND a 1.4x teleconverter for the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM.
Hi Olle, really interesting this 300mm! Do you find that the AF with AI on A7rV is better than the AF of the A7IV? I saw tests saying that the A7IV was better and notement on birds in flight, I would have liked to have your opinion please. And thank you for your always quality content!!
I just bought the simga 500mm f4 because of your video’s of the lens i can say it’s really good maybe not the fasted af but it keeps up quite well. I got. A good second hand deal on it so it was quite cheap now i can save up and when i have enough i sell it agian to buy the 400mm for sony 300 is just a bit to short for me. But i can recommend everyone to buy a sigma 500mm f4 as a step up lens to a real sony prime if you can carry the weight
300mm is just never enough really. I went from the 200-600 to the 500mm F4 Sigma on the A7RV, what a Difference, the Sigma is crazy sharp, it's night and day compared to the Sony 200-600. Would never go back.
Damn theses Photos are Amazing! o: I wish i had a 100-400 or 200-600 with an R Camera xD The moment when you Crop the image and its still crazy sharp.. dayum.. But im still a newbie c: currently i have a 6400 with a Tamron 17-70 2.8 VC for a very good allrounder Lens (currently not for animals xD but i like to go further in the future) And maybe the 6400 is not the best Animal Camera.. idk why but the Tracker only works when i have Human eye on, not on animal (?) for me that makes no sense but hey /: What would you recommend me for that? Animal Eye with Wide/Large-Medium Spot or Human eye for the Tracking and then like you did (i think) a large/medium spot? /: never test it yet sadly

It works really well with both the 1.4 and 2x TC. You can easily use the 2X with no problem

I got this year in the spring my Canon EF 300 2.8 II and i Love it the sharpness ist insane and you can still Walk with it in Hand for a few hours

I want to prioritise weight in my kit, and I found the 300 with TC to cover my needs perfectly. But I’d love to have all three primes in a perfect world 😂
The quality of these primes is so high that using the teleconverters still gives excellent results if you need a bit more reach. I find the A7RV an excellent wildlife camera, as the cropping ability is astounding.
What a great pleasure to see 1. a new video of yours and 2. the same combo I used all summer to shoot vultures, eagles and hawks!
I used the A7RV with 20-70mm and let me tell you all people, it’s insane how you can space between 20mm and 900mm with just two lenses in the smallest, lightweight wildlife camera bag ever! 2,5kg for the entire rig!
Yeah you read it right, 900mm, that’s because the 300gm has such an unsurpassed quality that you can weld the 2x TC and forget every previous problems about downgrade in sharpness, microcontrast and overall quality. You have a 600/5.6 top notch, and with the 26mpx A7RV crop, you can easily reach stunning 900mm to crop a little bit again! I was not a a cropping fan, but this combo change my mind so fast. It’s time for a 3x tc Sony!
Can’t wait to see other calm, contemplative, wild video with this lens. Congrats for the purchase, you won’t regret it!

@@richardfink7666 I disagree with the term "good", I prefered "better". Cause its AF compensate the 20/30 fps of other brands. Not the A1/9, they're the best
@@ph_anto Well not really. As you can see from the photos of the birds in flight the most beautiful wing positions are missing.
@@richardfink7666 if we're not talking about A1 and A9, I surely would choose A7RV AF reliability instead of a Canon R5/Nikon Z8 burst rate because I don't care about wing position if they are blurry.

2x teleconverter is meant to work really well with that too, you don't lose nearly as much light as on other lenses thanks to its 2.8, so might be worth trying it at 600mm F5.6

Hey Olle glad to see you bought a new lens for your lineup. The 300 f/2.8 looks like a great lens, the pictures and videos you've already taken with it looking crisp. I like the look and I'm also a fan of showing the animals in their natural environment as you can see at 8:37 rather than “always” closeup portraits... they are also pretty nice to capture don't get me wrong here 🤙😉

I was very close to buying the Sony 300mm 2.8 GM with 1.4x and 2x, but in March 2024 I got the excellent Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens. I still hope that Sony will make more high end prime tele Lenses, like fx 300mm 4.0, 400mm 4.5, 500mm 5.6 AND a 1.4x teleconverter for the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM.

I just bought the simga 500mm f4 because of your video’s of the lens i can say it’s really good maybe not the fasted af but it keeps up quite well. I got. A good second hand deal on it so it was quite cheap now i can save up and when i have enough i sell it agian to buy the 400mm for sony 300 is just a bit to short for me. But i can recommend everyone to buy a sigma 500mm f4 as a step up lens to a real sony prime if you can carry the weight

300mm is just never enough really. I went from the 200-600 to the 500mm F4 Sigma on the A7RV, what a Difference, the Sigma is crazy sharp, it's night and day compared to the Sony 200-600. Would never go back.
Damn theses Photos are Amazing! o: I wish i had a 100-400 or 200-600 with an R Camera xD The moment when you Crop the image and its still crazy sharp.. dayum..
But im still a newbie c: currently i have a 6400 with a Tamron 17-70 2.8 VC for a very good allrounder Lens (currently not for animals xD but i like to go further in the future)
And maybe the 6400 is not the best Animal Camera.. idk why but the Tracker only works when i have Human eye on, not on animal (?) for me that makes no sense but hey /:

Hello brother, would you ever like to review canon camera bodies, although sony's lens range is really wide and autofocus is just too good, but regarding colour science and processing of digital noise, it would be exciting to see how you as a sony user experiences canon.
