The choice of textures and layers is sublime. I don't think a lot of people truly appreciate the difficulty in being able to pull this off with this genre/form of music. You're walking a knife's edge, balancing your choices between the simplicity and honesty of the mood with the richness of atmosphere. It's quite easy to lose one's footing and many wind up overdoing the effects to make up for thin melodies. Or they do an impersonation as opposed to an alternate arrangement, often more concerned with prioritizing caricature over sincerity and depth. It's a shame really, because i believe one of the better parts of music is its ability to be a leveller. Some of the best moments i've witnessed is when a guitarist plays a wrong note in a solo or a singer fluffs a line and the audience still loves them because they're just as human. In that music holds a beautiful kind of forgiveness for our humanity so we don't feel the readiness to hide our vulnerabilities. You've given us something vulnerable and wonderful here Carmello. It does not at all lack of spirit or presence and it shows an understanding to be one's self and yet respect the past. Others may make the notation so busy that it disallows the listener from being able to have the moment to truly feel present within. To have otherwise basked in what could've been a habitat of gorgeously curated tones that are indeed thoughtful, weighed and measured is instead a self indulgent showcase that borrows from others and presents technique and talent but without substance or purpose beyond seeking praise. You on the other hand, have paid careful attention and you can tell when a musician has made something from a place of gut feeling and pure intention. Because it is unquestionable that you yourself ARE present. So we join you for the ride and we thank you for it. This truth! You've nailed this and it is a fine fine offering. As an OG fan of the band who bought the album this song came on on day one release and has been listening ever since, you've most certainly done this tender ballad much justice and I've no doubt Madame O'Riordan would be smiling upon you (bless her, wherever she may be). Very much excited for what you may choose to deliver next. But don't feel any internet rush or pressure or expectations. You can't force good art, and you young man are an artist without question.
