    "People who are not runners or not part of the outdoors community see that race, and they identify with it.
    In their mind, even though they're sedentary persons who don't go further than their corner market, they feel a Value towards it."
    That's me. In my mind i run and finish the race. But there is no way i would even finish one lap.
    I am in awe for the few who push their outer limits that far.

    It is the ultimate mental challenge as most people just don’t the epic navigation/Orienteering skills required on a dark foggy cold wet night
    It’s hard enough on a Sailboat with a really good idea we’re your going

    • @ericpetersen8645
      @ericpetersen8645 4 года назад +1

      Definitely that’s the mental stress most are unprepared for. Imagine how you feel when you’re lost, and add a couple of cold, wet, dark, tired Barkley marathon laps to that feeling.

    Rarely hear Beth Pascall mentioned for the Barkley but she's got the navigation skills, the ability on the hills, and a pedigree in the US. If she and Damo teamed up and had 3 years at it they'd have a serious crack

    Thanks for the video, just fascinated by the Barkleys and wished (albeit foolishly) I had know of it during my running years. And not being an Ultra follower …..I am curious have any of the World's Best ever attempted and/or finish(they may have ….I'm just not familiar with this world) . I would think that Jared Campbell & John Kelly have to be considered World Class …..? I'm sure some runners that are "World Class" wouldn't want to touch this event out of fear, ego, intimidation, no real upside for them, no prize money or commercial opportunity....I'd love to hear what you all think. Cheers!

    "only to discover everyone else that moved up had the same attributes and I was getting nowhere" ..... nah dude... thats only if you think about it in terms of competing against others.... you're competing against yourself here! Literally completion IS the accomplishment.... sure winning is awesome... but if i complete an ultra event in last place, and someone asks me about it.... "you go accomplish it" is all i need to say.
    But a bit on the psychology side... a HUGE part of wanting to step up is literally the thought that you can do it simply because no one else can push themselves like you can push yourself.... so the whole reason IS because of knowing what you can put yourself thru... so do it
    I plan on it

    • @chadgregory9037

      "your competitors are the best friends you'll ever have" ...... you're god damn right about that, NO ONE ON THIS FUCKING EARTH HAS THE GUTS TO PUSH THEMSELVES.... it's so nice to meet people who actually can/do

      Realistically, he would 100 percent not finish. He is a really good runner, but the people who finish the Barkley are on another level compared to him. There are also other skills, such as orientation, which david goggins may or may not have. David goggins also has not really raced for a long time. He did the moab 240 and leadville, but before that, he hadn't raced for a couple years.

    • @JensFMller
      @JensFMller 4 года назад +10

      @@nickherrmann5724 realisticly he has Ranger and Seal level navigational skills, no doubt among the best to ever try the race. I know he would be up there with the best of them, I would give him 3-4 laps, on his first attempt

    • @nickherrmann5724
      @nickherrmann5724 4 года назад +4

      @@JensFMller Maybe, who knows. 100 percent Jared Campbell and all other Barkley finishers are better ultra runners than Goggins though.

    Orienteering is a skill. Yes, you can learn the basics quickly, but then you need to practice. Gender has nothing to do with it.
