@@WJstudios04 I don't think that's what his expression tells us. His expression and attitude seemed like a mixture of confusion and sorrow being covered by the fact that he's used to being such social outcast. His regret led him to go in that bar-ish place (whatever it is called) to fight a drunken brawl, his self destructive attitude fueled by his regret led him to a situation where he can punish himself.

What most people fail to realize in this scene is that Holmes worked out how this entire encounter would go. He knew that Mary would be aware of who he was and of his particular relationship with Dr. Watson. There was still a part of him that wanted to drive a wedge between Mary and John so he planned to make Mary angry so that she would leave, forcing Watson to leave as well. The proof of all this is that, shortly before they arrived at his table, Holmes can be seen checking his watch, ostensibly to check the time, but in actuality checking the timing of John and Mary's arrival. Afterward and with perfect timing, Holmes' meal arrives almost the instant they leave showing that Holmes ordered his meal - and no one else's - beforehand, in the complete assurance that he would be dining alone.

  • @SprikSprak
    @SprikSprak 3 года назад +332

Couple of great details here for me - first is that she only decides to throw the wine on him after his assertion that she was a gold digger - she was not offended by his embarrassing insights but by the presumption on her character. The second is that the single meal arrives for him without any others - he'd ordered a meal for one since he'd surmised he would have alienated his guests by the time it was ready to be served.

Yes, she insisted for his deductions but he did not tell her just his deductions. He went a step further and started with assumptions (that she left her previous fiance because of the money). I guess it is a habit for a detective who deals with crimes, to assume bad things by default.

    • @ravensquote7206
      @ravensquote7206 3 года назад +33

Thus leaving the question of weather he knew better or intentionally lied. Mind you that of everyone at the table, he _doesn't_ want this wedding to go through... or at least we are lead to believe such (there's a chance he's attempting to help strengthen their bond through reverse psychology, but I digress). If that's the case then attempting to slander her name by saying she was motivated by riches would be perfectly in line with Holmes' personal goals.
She spent time abroad- long enough to get a tan that would last for some time afterwords- with someone who supposedly didn't have money. Holmes would not likely have missed this contradiction. Hence the possibility of deceit.

Deductions ultimately are assumptions, as with Watson the blade and neatness says military man, the stub says gambler, however the blade could be brought if a solider died or sold it, neatness could just be OCD and the stub could be a 1 off night out with a friend. Ultimately a deduction is the most likely assumption and if she's working with a governess could mean she has money as its a high position, can go on holiday in those times to a location to get a tan will infer money as well, so the deduction that she might have left a man who pretended to be well off but turned out not to be, in a society that was very much about women marrying for security more than love, is ultimately the most likely assumption and deduction.
She threw the water because she knows from Watson that Homes is against their marriage so she tries to indulge his curiosity to get him on board but he takes it as another opportunity to try and sabotage the wedding rather than as an olive branch.

Even in the original Sherlock Holmes stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes gets everything right except for a very minor detail. Usually this detail has no bearing on the case or situation itself but usually creates an awkward situation in the room. This theme is continued in all the movies and TV shows as well including the modern adaptation "Sherlock".
And also, in the original stories, Sherlock Holmes is very calibrated in his response and demeanour, whereas in all the films and TV shows, he's shown as rash and blunt.

      *Dialogue Transcript for this scene.*
      - Take Watson...
      - I intend to.
See his walking stick? Rare African snakewood. Hiding a blade of high tensile steel.
Few were rewarded to the veterans of the Afghan war,
so I can assume, he's a decorated soldier.
Strong, brave, born to be an adventurer.
and neat, like all military men.
      Now, I check his pockets.
Ah, a stamp from a boxing match.
Now, I can infer that he's a bit of a gambler.
I'd keep an eye on that dowry if I were you.
      - Those days are behind me.
      - Right, behind you.
It's cost us the rent, more than once.
Well with all due respect, Mr. Holmes, You know John very well.
      What about a complete stranger?
What can you tell about me?
      - You?
      - I don't think that's...
      - I don't know that, that's...
      - Not at dinner.
      - Perhaps another time.
      - I insist.
      - You insist?
      - You remember we discussed this.
      The lady insists
      - You're a governess.
      - Well done.
Yes, well done. Shall we... Waiter!
Your student... It's a boy of eight.
      - Charlie is seven, actually.
And he's tall for his age. He flicked you with ink today.
      - Is there ink on my face?
      - There is nothing wrong with your face.
There are two drops on your ear in fact.
India blue is nearly impossible to wash off.
Anyway, very impetuous act of that boy, but you're too experienced to react rashly,
which is why the lady for whom you work
      lent you that necklace.
Pearls, diamonds, flawless rubies. Hardly the gems of a governess.
However, the jewels you are not wearing, tell us rather more.
      - Holmes!
      You were engaged.
The ring has gone, but the lightness of the skin where it once sat suggests that you spent some time abroad, wearing it proudly that is, until you were informed of its true and rather modest worth which then you broke off the engagement and returned to, England for better prospects.
      A doctor perhaps?
You're right on all counts Mr. Holmes, apart from one.
      I didn't leave him.
      He died.
      - Well done, old boy.

So many comments saying she asked for it and calling her names without realizing she didn't give him carte blanche to insult her without justification, but to make deductions. He deliberately crossed the line by choosing the worst assumption without being sure that she was a gold digger, and he knows it. Hence why he didn't bother wiping the wine. It's funny that Holmes realized the mistake but part of the audience didn't.

If this was a younger Sherlock Holmes I'd have believed that he made the mistake of assumption rather than deduction. A younger Sherlock Holmes might would've got carried away in his bid to impress through his power of deductions. However, by this age Sherlock Holmes wouldn't do such a mistake unless..it's intentional. I like to believe that Sherlock just got a bit jealous of her and simply didn't want both of them to have a good time together. That reveals his emotional connect with Dr. Watson as well as his emotional immaturity to deal with separation. Sherlock is actually afraid of losing people he loves and therefore deliberately never even accepts his love for Irene Adler.

there's a difference between deductions and assumptions. my nanna was watching this with me (she loves sherlock holmes) and she's an actual psychologist. i told her (i'm translating and it was a while ago so excuse me if the english isn't right), "i thought sherlock holmes was clever" and she says, "yes, but he wasn't being clever, he was being a know-it-all." i, of course, was confused and she explained it like this:
"deduction" is using what you have and finding the formula to solve the question. what holmes does is he has the equivalent of a sum in front of him and has to figure out the order in which to deduct which then can help him solve for the solution. there is always a margin of error but he has become so good at deducing his "sums" that he knows what an error looks like.
what he was doing in this scene is very deliberate by the way he ignores the margin of error and goes the more human route - assuming. he doesn't have a formula, just the sum and just tries to answer it based on what he sees and knows rather than what he can figure out by creating a formula.
i know this is random, but this is what i always think of when watching sherlock and i thought someone else might find it to be an interesting perspective!

Anna Schmitt she was insulted that he assumed the worst of her just because of a few clues. He didn't have the full picture yet painted her as a gold digger with no heart in his approximation of her when the truth was actually quite the opposite. Everything Holmes was doing in this scene was purposed to sabotage the relationship, intentional or not. Mentioning John's gambling and love of action insinuating he'd be poor at settling down and wouldn't be as wealthy as she'd like (since Holmes assumed she was after his money).
Holmes' guess work showed that he had no intention of approving of her and, despite knowing little about her, already had a prejudice towards her just because she was in a relationship with his only real friend. Holmes was afraid of being alone again just as he ended up in this scene, with no one to blame but himself.

To me, that shows how Sherlock actually approves of Mary but doesn't want to admit it, still intending to sabotage her relationship with Watson.
