I don't react to TV very often but when he appeared behind her I just about jumped off the couch and did a happy dance. One of my favorite scenes in the series
My absolute favourite television episode of all time. The acting, the visuals, the music as subtext is flawlessly edited, but the overall impact is just raw emotion. One think I think gets overlooked sometimes, is the water running down the window, right in the place where tears would be falling from the eyes behind the glass if the person who owned them could ever allow such a thing to happen. Genius.
"When I say run, run" is actually one of the most iconic Doctor Who dialogue and I just really love that Moffat and Gatiss (2 DW nerds) actually used it in Sherlock
@@uncletomcobley6950 if he could he would have or maybe he does have feelings but never shows them. He is S.H. we'll never know. In the books he is weird but not a sociopath
I think one of the underrated layers of this scene is how Sherlock knows that John (in the rare position of knowing something Sherlock doesn't) is wrestling with how to deliver the terrible news, ultimately deciding to stay silent, and carry the weight for him. While Irene consumes the bulk of his thoughts, there's a fleeting moment (2:18-2:21) where you get the sense that for Sherlock, it's a kindness (quiet and w/o fanfare) that does not go unnoticed.
godot You got it. It’s this knowledge that empowers Sherlock to, in spite of his often inhuman disposition, perhaps appreciate Watson’s position (grappling with whether to reveal Irene’s fate, or to tell him a happy lie). As he also knows Watson thinks he is unaware of Irene’s fate. In a sense he gets to observe Watson with the same omniscience the audience does (w/the added advantage of knowing he’d spared Irene). Amazing episode (clearly, if I found myself back here after 2 years lol)
The mastery of Moffat & Cumberbatch is that they've managed to sail right through the eye of the paradox with this version of Sherlock Holmes: "I may be on the side of the angels - but don't think for one second that I am one of them." "I'm not a hero. I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Merry Christmas!" And pairing the "I AM SHERLOCKED" scene with this one. And it's all believable. And wonderful.
Brian Gerstel Moffat is quite a bad writer compared to gatiss who could write the whole thing by himself and it would be 10x better season 4 was shit and it was Moffats fault

This felt like a movie.. so many emotional moments with the usual humour.. sherlock being angry when mrs hudson was captured.. him showing feelings for irene.. and the best moment of series.. I AM SHERLOCKED
,,When I say run, run!'' I think it'd be awesome if they make one special episode for these two-so we can see what happened after Sherlock saved Irene. Don't you agree?
Unfortunately no film adaption ive ever seen continues irene’s story. I think its cuz most just stick to ACD’S books only. But there are about 4 authors of sherlockian books out there. Sherlock/irene ended up together & with one son named after john f a few others & who goes by the name nero wolf. Sherlock also outlives everyone & dies at 103, his last breath is “oh irene irene.” Rather a tragic love story. He also has two older brothers, not one as well as a sister. Sherrinford (which was ACD’S original pick of names for the sherlock character before picking sherlock) is hinted at in ACD’S books but not by name. Apparently some stuff mycroft did could not have happened unless there was an older brother involved. Sherrinford then mycroft then sherlock then enlola, their sister. But she is in other books, not ACD’S. siger & violet are alluded to in ACD’S work. Sigerson pops up somewhere...essentially son of siger. The parents of sherlock (& the others. Enola’s second name violet is from their mother. Sherlock is actually his second name. William is his first...& then scott is the third family name. William sherlock scott holms. Of course you gotta do sht ton of reading & be willing to explore all sherlockian books, not just ACD’S to get the whole story. That being said, sherlocks honeybees are in the ACD books, but ive yet to see them in films. Benedict cumberbatch is related to ACD so hopefully he knows about the bees from the books. Id like to see them!
Honestly, I do believe I like it as it is now. This episode, and this particular ending, is one of my favorite if not most favorite TV moments of all time. The way it ends allows for open interpretation of what happens moving forward. Although I honestly expected there to be interaction between these two in some way, shape, or form at some point later in the series I’m quite alright with how they left it alone. Really, truly, one of the best TV episodes of all time. All these years later this STILL gets to me even though I know what’s coming.
0:29 I got to feel sorry for John, having Sherlock bloody Holmes staring down at him like that when he told the lie about Irene. Cause you can just see it from 0:32 and 0:35 that Sherlock doesn’t buy it for one second. If I were John I’d just be like 'Screw it! I should’ve let Mycroft say it.'
Even more hilarious is when john says “witness protection program” & sherlocks face is like...yeah about that.....cuz at that moment, sherlock is the only one who knows what is actually going on! 😂
I'd like to add how funny it is for johnlockers to interpret this scene as proof of jonhlock. Bc Sherlock put the phone away and the entire Irene theme was played. My guys, boys and girls, there has never been any johnlock and what you've just seen is Adlock.
I loved this episode, I loved Irene and her texts omg they made me laugh and cry at the same time, she was truly the only woman Sherlock would ever care about
So many things in one scene, Sherlock worried when he thought whether Irene came to London and when John said America, he was relaxed that all think she died... Him asking Irene's phone which is her heart, John feeling bad for Sherlock that the only woman he cared is dead.. John's jealousy and awkwardness when Sherlock begged twice for the phone, and then when he asked about the message and Sherlock said about her last message, the heart break in John's face...Oh my god.....Also it reminds me of 'The sign of three' episode where during his mind palace thing, Irene comes in a flirt way to disturb Sherlock and he says I am busy, get out of my head aww....Also in 'The lying detective' when John deducted that it's Sherlock's birthday, it says a lot that Irene is very close to Sherlock, even John didn't know his birthday but she did know and John knows that Irene texts him on special occassions and it cannot be any other day except his b'day damn....Then in the 'Final problem' , Eurus asks Sherlock to play his heart and he plays Irene Adler theme to which Eurus asks have u had sex? I was like so happy but tensed at the same time..... Irene's smile and Sherlock's gesture to save her is so intense, there's something people....My heart, my brain , my body exploded
"John's jealousy and awkwardness when Sherlock begged twice (for the phone)." Twice. The writers did a marvelous job of relating everything to everything else, didn't they?
At the end I think the rain on the window sliding across Sherlock's eyes has somehow tell the us that he deeply care about her and she is the only Woman will forever exist in his music, mind palace and heart, but at the same time he knows he has little chance to see her ever again. He didn't cry, his heart does. Soon he walked away from the window and move on with his life.
We aren't gonna talk about how Sherlock somehow snuck off to Karachi, ingrained himself in a terrorist organization, then proceeded to cut down multiple men with a scimitar, free Irene Adler, and return to England before anyone got wise?
I like the way Sherlock in disguise makes the sound of the sword without beheading her. The way he swerves the sword, It looks so chivalrous how he went and save her. And the music heightens the performance. Brilliant.
Man when i watched this eps 1 year ago,it ended when she texted her and the executioner came. I cried ONE FREAKING YEAR thinking she is dead. And today I see the original scene Yes.Finally my soul can rest in peace Hail "AHHHHHH"
I got to admit that I have only seen this episode today and I can't believe nobody mentioned the scene right before this one. In which Mycroft tells John what 'happened to Irene'. John first says: 'he just refers to her as the woman', thinking it has no meaning. But Mycroft's line is even more powerful: 'it would take Sherlock Holmes to fool me'. Oh yes it would.
that scene where he looks at the text thread btwn he and her. It's obv he loves her. Sherlock is always known in the show to have the last word and here it denotes he never answers.

I don't react to TV very often but when he appeared behind her I just about jumped off the couch and did a happy dance. One of my favorite scenes in the series
2:17 is one of the most sophisticated moments in film that I've ever seen.
*TV series, but yes i agree.
SirFerzie You're right; in TV.

The music is absolutely stunning
My absolute favourite television episode of all time. The acting, the visuals, the music as subtext is flawlessly edited, but the overall impact is just raw emotion. One think I think gets overlooked sometimes, is the water running down the window, right in the place where tears would be falling from the eyes behind the glass if the person who owned them could ever allow such a thing to happen. Genius.
Irene said that she thinks John likes Sherlock more then she does and she's in love with him 😂
Yes, because it's one of her text messages she sent to Sherlock. She knows, who is the most important person to him and it's not her.
She clearly was joking and she texted likes not love.
"When I say run, run" is actually one of the most iconic Doctor Who dialogue and I just really love that Moffat and Gatiss (2 DW nerds) actually used it in Sherlock
When He said (3:36)
" A woman.....The woman" My heart almost died from how sweet
He really loved her
Not quite.
@@uncletomcobley6950 if he could he would have or maybe he does have feelings but never shows them. He is S.H. we'll never know. In the books he is weird but not a sociopath
Wasn’t it “the woman, th*e* woman”
@@mohammadmuzammil4848 he's not a sociopath in the show either, he just likes to think that he is because he is scared of emotions.
Heh idiot.. he said..."the" woman and then th*e* woman. U wouldn't the know the difference if you are american.
My friend pointed out that he got to be a pirate with his sword in that moment as well.
Damn! That's hands down the best way of saying, "I love you too"... ♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍
The scenes + music are so beautiful.
A scandle in Bohimia was always my fav short story and this ending made me fall in love with the show
This hurt but I don't know why....
This is hurting me 'cause i dont ship them.
@@m3lissr ...How the hell can you not? This is a love story better then any other I have seen in decades and they did it in an hour and a half!
@@giantWario Sorry. Im a Johnlock shipper :((
Probably the music
@@m3lissr still a better story than Twilight
I think one of the underrated layers of this scene is how Sherlock knows that John (in the rare position of knowing something Sherlock doesn't) is wrestling with how to deliver the terrible news, ultimately deciding to stay silent, and carry the weight for him. While Irene consumes the bulk of his thoughts, there's a fleeting moment (2:18-2:21) where you get the sense that for Sherlock, it's a kindness (quiet and w/o fanfare) that does not go unnoticed.
But Sherlock knows something John doesn't. He knows she didn't die because he saved her
godot You got it.
@@IndyJones31 It is easily the best of the entire show
The only time Sherlock Holmes is seen crying 3:53 - done with class by the director.
Oh man…
He cried in a lot of episodes...
Such a great conclusion.
The mastery of Moffat & Cumberbatch is that they've managed to sail right through the eye of the paradox with this version of Sherlock Holmes:
"I may be on the side of the angels - but don't think for one second that I am one of them."
"I'm not a hero. I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Merry Christmas!"
And pairing the "I AM SHERLOCKED" scene with this one.
And it's all believable. And wonderful.
Brian Gerstel I read it cucumber batch every single time
Brian Gerstel Moffat is quite a bad writer compared to gatiss who could write the whole thing by himself and it would be 10x better season 4 was shit and it was Moffats fault
John said earlier in this episode that he heard 57 but theirs only like 14 there. What other moans was he hearing
WHEN I SAW THIS ON TELE FOR THE FIRST TIME. I HAVE TO ADMIT I GOT CHOKED UP A BIT. OUT OF ALL 4 SEASONS. THIS HAD THE BEST SOUNDTRACK AND THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE. PEACE.
I absolutely love how John is shocked because of "please" and "thank you" 😂
Have watched this a 100 times, and that one moment still gives me goosebumps.
his message tone though....:D
Soooo ridiculus jdjkxjsbsmsbsjs
Remember the beginning of A Scandal In Bohemia? - 'To Sherlock holmes she is always 'the woman' '
Yes, but it's only a respectful title and had nothing to do with love.
Christina Beyer yup
Sherlock was never interested in her because of sexuality, he was attracted to her mind, as an intellectual equal. Someone to play with.
sherlock deduces that Irene's pupils dilated when Sherlock sees her, and in 3:19 Sherlock's pupils dilated 😅😅😅😍😍😍😍😊😊😊
Renxy Baluyot nice observation
Well correct me if I'm wrong, but he was about to kill some people a second after that, so the pupil dilation might be from the adrenaline or something
He just opened his eyes bigger
wasn't it supposed to do the opposite? he saw a couple of body so i'm pretty sure it's not the cause, even if he scared of killing, his pupils will contract
Well I mean not really Benedicts dilated probably due to the lighting
The best four minutes of television ever written.
One of the best romantic chemistry I ever came across in all movies I've seen.
still gets goosebumps
I don't know what but there's something about this scene that makes me want to see it over and over again...
bluff, double bluff, double double bluff... so much love in these couple of minutes.
I had never experienced such deep sorrow change into such great happiness than the moment Irene’s execution turned into her rescue
she truly does love him.
her last words would've been "Goodbye Mr. Holmes"
"Goodbye, John"
Adlock all the way.
but now it's, "Adblock"
Pranav Dwivedi its now johnlock
Johnlock is endgame
Eleven Eggos why
backerstreet's lovestory noooo
The fake out ending was absolutely clever.
This episode was truly a masterpiece.
This ending always makes me smile!! Amazing writing and directing!!!
Oh my god, i just love how john took a deep breath to break the news but the second he saw sherlocks face backed out, so precious. 0:29
This felt like a movie.. so many emotional moments with the usual humour.. sherlock being angry when mrs hudson was captured.. him showing feelings for irene.. and the best moment of series.. I AM SHERLOCKED
Its basically a movie series. Long runtime, standalone stories.
,,When I say run, run!''
I think it'd be awesome if they make one special episode for these two-so we can see what happened after Sherlock saved Irene. Don't you agree?
Yeeeees
Unfortunately no film adaption ive ever seen continues irene’s story. I think its cuz most just stick to ACD’S books only. But there are about 4 authors of sherlockian books out there. Sherlock/irene ended up together & with one son named after john f a few others & who goes by the name nero wolf.
Sherlock also outlives everyone & dies at 103, his last breath is “oh irene irene.”
Rather a tragic love story.
@@mystiquesword Thank you! Underrated comment, much explained.
@@mystiqueswordcan you please tell the author of the book with sherlock and irene’s love story?
"I'm not dead, let's have dinner." 🗣️
I love the way he keeps the phone a great nod to the original scandal in bohemia.
This episode was a masterpiece, I am Sherlocked is the best moment in TV history.
When she opens her eyes, her face says it all. "He loves me, too."
Still my favourite episode with the best ending possible. Loved it.
i cant believe this scene was 10 years ago
Having seen Basil Rathbone and quite a few other Sherlock Holmes, This is the best and most entertaining.
IMO best sherlock episode, just a really well written, well acted out episode, up there with some of the best episode in TV
the soundtrack for this ep is incredible.
When i watched this episode for first time this ending made me burst in joy. The scene dialogues and the backgroud score everything is perfect :)
I'd like to add how funny it is for johnlockers to interpret this scene as proof of jonhlock. Bc Sherlock put the phone away and the entire Irene theme was played. My guys, boys and girls, there has never been any johnlock and what you've just seen is Adlock.
I loved this episode, I loved Irene and her texts omg they made me laugh and cry at the same time, she was truly the only woman Sherlock would ever care about
A Scandal in Belgravia is the most surprising ending I have ever seen.
As a fan of the stories I always liked the interpretation that they did. She was the only one who ever escaped. In the books, he never catches her.
want to point out that sherlock apparently fought and probably killed several armed men with a sword for this woman that is love
And that they didn't have guns. Perfect.
@@mortalclown3812 they probably had a suddenly realizing their guns were not working
Everytime i watch this scene i get goosebumps and I often tear up
I was so happy when I first saw this scene.
It's good how they brought something originally from the 1800's to the 21st century.
And they finished it by and large.
You won’t believe how glad I was at the ending
So he did text her once? "Happy new year"
Silent Refusal he did, and it was shown earlier in the episode. ❤️
Apart from everything, best choice of text message tone ever, Period.
Two profoundly damaged individuals. Both remarkably gifted for the same reasons. Beyond the normal, yet so vulnerable. So profoundly bitter-sweet...
Very well put 👌
We aren't gonna talk about how Sherlock somehow snuck off to Karachi, ingrained himself in a terrorist organization, then proceeded to cut down multiple men with a scimitar, free Irene Adler, and return to England before anyone got wise?
Apparently, no. But we should honestly.
Nah he does something like that every fortnight
This episode is definitely the best one in all Sherlock episodes.
And today I see the original scene
Yes.Finally my soul can rest in peace
Hail "AHHHHHH"
I got to admit that I have only seen this episode today and I can't believe nobody mentioned the scene right before this one. In which Mycroft tells John what 'happened to Irene'. John first says: 'he just refers to her as the woman', thinking it has no meaning. But Mycroft's line is even more powerful: 'it would take Sherlock Holmes to fool me'. Oh yes it would.
that scene where he looks at the text thread btwn he and her. It's obv he loves her. Sherlock is always known in the show to have the last word and here it denotes he never answers.
This was my favorite episode....
Best episode of the entire series.
