Hi Justin. Thanks for giving me the chills when reacting to many of my favourite artists. It’s always nice to see others react and give credit where it’s due despite many not being ‘hits’. I’ve been a Tzukie for 40 years and you should absolutely brush aside the fact that she has only one ‘hit’. Over 20 albums later she is still going strong and there are sooo many great albums in the collection. Best to do them in order and her 2nd album Sportscar is a hugely underrated album with rippers like ‘Sportscar’ and beautiful ballards like ‘Understanding’. She is one of the most underrated artists of all time, particularly in terms of song writing. If you want to cherry pick through her career, then other than Sportscar, I highly recommend ‘I am the Phoenix’, ‘The Cat is Out’, ‘Wonderland’, ‘Under the Angels’ and ‘Secret Agent’. You highlight the amazing musicians behind Judie - well these albums -especially the earlier ones are gorgeous in that respect. Michael
I agree . May I also point out the Marvel that is "Shoot The Moon" (1984) which saw her and the band Unify and, as the Yanks put it so delicately, KICK the Melodic Subtle Turbo Refined ASS of One Hit Wonderville. "Heaven Can Wait" has JP written all over it.
HI Justin. Dave from Across The Ocean. Thanks for the name-check. Great reaction as usual, to the song that launched her career. Lovely romantic ballad, beautifully sung and played, especially that multi-layered orchestral break. When I saw her live, a few years ago, her two daughters added those backing harmonies. Maybe a surprise other singles didn't chart, but her first few albums did.
Such a gorgeous song. It takes me back to my student days in the early 80s and that two in the morning bit of a party where people start to put on the very mellow records and just sit around vibing. :) Lovely, thoughtful reaction as always, JP.
Justin, if you get the chance check out Judi's live video version of this track from her concert "Live in London" from 1985. She's got the Kate Bush charisma for sure, and she and the band knock the song out of the park.
Thank you, Justin, for listening to the whole of this excellent album! Long before I got around to buying the LP, whenever I heard this song on the radio, it would just stop me in my tracks. It's an absolutely stunning record! It is a shame, though, that many people only know Judie for this one song, when this album alone is full of great numbers! If you would like to hear a more recent track by Judie Tzuke, then I would recommend the song "Evergreen" from her newest album, "Jude The Unsinkable" (2023).
A really gorgeous song. I remember this getting a lot of air play when I was a kid, although the charts were full of new wave bands at the time. It deserved to be a much bigger hit though. Judie may have been a 'one hit wonder' as far as the singles charts were concerned, but she continued to score hit albums throughout the 1980s.
Hi JP . Just wanted to express my thanks for your reactions to all of these Welcome to the Cruise album tracks. One of my favorite albums of all time , that I've been listening to for 45 years ! Really appreciate your thoughts and reactions to Judie . Although she never had a follow up hit , the quality of her music over the years has been constant. The charts ain't everything !!
Absolutely gorgeous ballad. Timeless classic sums it up perfectly.....never,ever tire of hearing this..... Hey Justin any chance of a reaction to "Questions " by Manfred Manns Earthband......an equally, beautifully haunting song?🙏
It's great to have the contrast between songs like this and heavier music. She has such a beatifully clear voice. The arrangement is so lovely,i feel better having listened. The whole album is great. I've had this album since it came on on LP. never mind hits, the albums she made like Sportscar are great. The track Understanding is a good listen.
Committed the ultimate reaction video crime with this, saw you were reacting to Judie Tzuke but waited until this track came up before watching.........an absolutely lovely song. There's a track by Mylo called Need You Tonite which samples this beautifully.
I've always got time for Judie. What I like best about her is what I call the "clarity" of her voice when reaching for words - it's full but it's clean, it cuts through whatever orchestration is put over it, but with nothing harsh. The song I like best of hers is so mainly down to context, I think. It's from a bit of a crappy place in real world terms, but reminds me of old friends from there. Name of song (I think) *Boys in Chinatown* . It's what she does with her voice over it that was the fascination (like the extra bits you mention here). Now I think of it it was almost prototypical "Mariah Carey" - that (sorry for the word) yodeling - or whatever the right term is - singing scales from the one note to the next. If you get in the mood for something less sentimental after that, you might try *Bonin' in the Boneyard* by *Fishbone* as a kind of "chaser". I must try to think of a less alcoholic metaphor than that. ruclips.net/video/fLoH7Ra2WxI/видео.html
Told you! 😀 This is such a fantastic song - definitely one that comes to mind if anyone ever asks for my favourite song or what I think is the best song ever... I enjoyed your impressions and analysis of this and indeed all the songs on the album. You should listen to more of her work - her first 7-8 albums are all high quality and continue her wonderful style .. perhaps fewer 10/10 songs, but none below 7.5/10 I'd say. So if you continue into Sports Car I'm sure you'll be well rewarded ♥
I haven't heard the full album review sadly, as I'm not on Patreon, but I'm sure you have mentioned that it was released on Elton John's Rocket Record label. Well, Judy wrote the words to what I think is one of Elton's top 5 songs. Never a hit, never played live, I don't think, but I have loved it ever since 1980. It's the closing song on '21 At 33' - 'Give Me The Love'.
A beautiful song and I agree with all your points, though I think the 'I'll show you a sunset' line is more promising a night of passion if her lover stays with her 'til dawn.
To some, this song is the epitome of Middle Of The Road. Who cares when a record is absolutely bloody *PERFECT* as this is? A sweet, poignant ballad, beautifully arranged, and *exquisitely* sung. I mean WHAT A VOCAL ❤ EDIT - I thought I'd link this here, as it might pique the interest of some of your fans: a really lovely cover of Stay With Me Til Dawn by a British girl called Kate Delbridge, who was only 13 when she recorded this. I think her singing is amazingly mature for her age, and she plays well too. Enjoy: ruclips.net/video/A2EhBfN4ZlA/видео.htmlsi=qlpj84UNztxlRytt
Yes, I watched that clip a while ago. She is quite talented isn't she? I have just watched a more recent clip of Kate performing one of her own songs, called, "Leave It All Behind", which is really good and certainly deserves more than the 384 views it has so far received.
@@sheldonhowells3083Yes! I've listened to her album, all her own songs, and it shows enormous promise. It's probably fair to describe it as a selection of demos, a calling card, rather than a fully-fledged album, as the arrangements are quite rudimentary and it sounds like it was mostly one-take, as her RUclips performances are (she's very adroit at adding effects, harmonies and percussion without breaking stride), so it gets a little bit samey by the end. However, the songs are melodically very pleasing, the words show promise, and her voice is really beautiful. I've been saying, ever since I heard the first original song she posted (Call Out My Name), that she could make a breakthrough and that I'll be able to tell people I've known about her since she was 13...
@@TheoZoffrok Thank you for your reply. I have not listened to the album/demo yet, but I have watched all of the clips of her own songs on her channel. As you said, she does show great promise. I will take a keen interest to see if Kate becomes the UK's next Judie Tzuke, Kate Bush or Laura Marling.
This was a single hit back in 1979, despite being an obvious talent she didn't have another hit single to my knowledge, being in my late teens at the time this was the song you wrapped yourself around your girlfriend for that romantic slow dance back then.
Another wonderful voice from England belongs to Carmel (McCourt). Check out her official video to "It's All In The Game" which stars Emma Thompson and Alfred Molina.
Diolch Justin :>) JP loves JT! I shall now focus and turn my attention to another One and a Half Hit Wonder, Stephen of the Duffy's proto-folk band, The Lilac Time and the opener from the newly remastered classic LP "Astronauts", namely, "In Iverna Gardens" My fave song ever! No, I've changed my mind : that's Jackie Leven's "The Garden". Doh. You decide. As for Judie, please do the new LP JUDE THE UNSINKABLE coz i ain't got round to buying it yet. 1979 - 2024 Bookender Stylee for Just JP.
Only word for this is 'gorgeous'. Should appeal even to those that don't normally go for this quiet introspective sort of music. First time I've heard it for a few years though and I was struck by the electric piano (? Might be wrong) which was a common sound in the seventies but you don't hear so much of now - which is a shame. Superseded by modern synths I suppose.
I recognize... It's ok, but some thing is missing... And Im always looking for some female artists to discover. I'll count Judy out... I mean, just listen to Turn, Turn, Turn performed on TV by the others, greatest Judy, Judy Collins, way way better
gorgeous...thanks for doing this album sir, really enjoyed listening to it again with you👍

One of my favourite ever ballads. Fantastic arrangement too.

This was a huge hit in Australia. Still holds up today. Great song.

Jeezo 1979, I was 14 into the Pistols, the Clash, AC/DC and this song blew me away, thankyou for the reprise Justin ❤

Ty Sheldon- it was a great find!
I haven't commented on any track from this album, but there's no denying that this is a beautiful ballad!
The best of 1979. Produced by John Punter, no less!

Putting it a lot simpler than JP, a wonderful chillout power ballad!
This was the hit, and deservedly so. Beautifully written, arranged and performed.
Well, shee-it, JustJP. Haven't heard this song for forty years or so. You surpass yourself for obscurity, my dude.
I follow where you and all others lead me to :) Ty LiS
