Obviously not doing work is the biggest thing but it also says to sanctify and remember the Shabbat. To remember Shabbat, my oldest son and I recite parts of the creation story. To sanctify it, we welcome it by saying ancient blessings beginning 18 minutes before sunset. This is known as Kiddush. We also close Shabbat with a prayer about 10 minutes after sunset. It's a special time and the kids are constantly asking during the week "how long until it's Shabbat?" We not only say it's a delight but we actually make it so. And not having to work is certainly a cherry on top.
Good luck with that. I would like to point your attention to Exodus 16:29 NIV: ^^ Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out. ^^ Wendy, do you personally keep this commandment faithfully? Or do you break the commandment of God and travel to church and elsewhere on the Sabbath?
Pastor, May you, your family and your congregation be blessed for keeping YeHoVah's Shabbat! For obedience to His Instructions brings blessings and disobedience brings curses.
I had the same question, What came to mind is maybe by being available to talk , pray or provide essential items such as food if someone is in need. It seems Jesus spent time in prayer on the sabbath but he did not deny someone if they had a need such as healing, food etc. However we know we must do these things in a safe manner and always with a helper, im not sure of your age but never approach do these things alone without freind or family to assist.
Maybe, if your a manager or boss, don’t make someone work, or in any case don’t try to make people work or get them to work in any way shape or form, as you’re resting, they should rest too!!
It isn’t so much about sitting in a chair and doing nothing. But that certainly is an option as well. The Sabbath is to be an “interruption” to our day to day routine. To rest from that routine (work that we do to feed ourselves and our families). This interruption is to provide us the necessary time and focus to “rest in God”. Hearing/Speaking His word. Loving God and loving others. This rest day gives you an opportunity to help others in a way you could not do when you are working during the other days of the week. 6 days you may do worldly work. 1 day you rest from that to focus on Kingdom work. This Kingdom work should be refreshing and not make you weary. I hope that makes sense. I may have just convinced myself to start practicing the Sabbath.
It also says one "new moon" in Isaiah 66. I practice new moon days and sabbath. The Bible doesn't say that all days are part of a week. They were commanded to open the gate on the new moon day and the sabbath. You can still have a new moon day while also keeping 6 days working and one day sabbath which describes 4 weeks each month.
Christ did many works on the sabbath and even encouraged the healed cripple to "Take up thy bed and walk" showing that he is "Master of the sabbath also" as he proclaimed.
Indeed Yeshua is and was Lord of Shabbat. But he didn't violate Torah by telling the man to pick up his mat. Only a very strict Pharisaic interpretation of "bearing a load". No such command was given to Moses.
Isnt the Sabbath a shadow? Are we to be in Christ, as he is lord of the Sabbath, and find rest in him, giving us his righteousness, and in so doing we can rest from the physical works by hand giving us that spiritual everlasting rest. As there is a change of the high priest, isn't there also a change in the law, making it better as Christ is the fulfillment of the law and prophets. Just my humble question.
Not the 7th day Sabbath, that's the 1 and only Sabbath day that was not a shadow. It was before sin and created for eternity in a rightous environment. It's the 4th Law and commanded since before creation and will be kept for eternity
"3/29/06 From The Lord, Our God and Savior The Word of The Lord Spoken to Timothy For All Those Who Have Ears to Hear Thus says The Lord God: You shall not desecrate the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, which I have commanded you to remember and keep holy. For as I had spoken it to My servant Moses, so it is and shall be, even to this day. And as I had spoken it before the congregation, so shall it be done. Yea, with the blowing of the great trumpet, with lightnings and thunderings, did I declare My Law; before the tribes of Israel, and in the presence of angels, did I put My power on open display. Yet the churches of men forsake The Law, and the peoples of this world seek to tear down My Commandments! Thus they shall surely die! The 7th day is the Sabbath of the Lord. For the truth, I like to turn to the Bible. That's what this is all about, right? If you want to know about Sabbath specifically here's some info, from the Bible. We see, from the Bible, the Sabbath is a creation institution. See Genesis 2:2, 3 where God blessed it and made it holy. It was the 7th day of the week and the weekly cycle has continued, unchanged, ever since. It is recorded in Genesis that God created this world and all life in and on it. God restates that in Exodus 20:8-11 where he names the Sabbath with His 10 commandments. “Remember the Sabbath day…” He says. Are the commandments still valid. Read them in Exodus 20. Most people will agree, they are still valid…except the 4th, the only one that begins “Remember”. That one, they say, you can forget. Does that make sense? What does God say. Nowhere in scripture is a command given to forget the Sabbath day and worship on Sunday. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8). God and His commandments do not change. People will say “We don’t need to keep the law to be saved” and while it is true, we are not saved by keeping the law Jesus said “If you love me keep my commandments” (John 14:15). So we keep the commandments because we are saved, because we love Him. Why would He say that if He didn't want us to obey? We want the promise of eternal life and speaking of that in Matthew 19:16-22, when He was asked about how to get it Jesus said “…if thou will enter into life, keep the commandments”. You will find this in Mark 10:17-22 and Luke 18:18-24 as well. These are the words of Jesus Himself. If the commandments could be done away with, as some falsely claim, why would Jesus have to die on the cross. He died to pay for our sin. “Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John3:4). Does sin still exist? Then the law is still valid. In Matthew 5:17 & 19, especially, Jesus tells us how He feels about the law. Read for yourself the words of Jesus. Read Matthew 7:24 where the Lord says “Therefore whosoever hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock”. Build your house upon the Rock, Jesus is the Rock, His Word is sure. It is the only sure thing in this world. Blessings to you as you study God’s Word.

Well obviously he said to rest. And to not have anyone on your property working either (for example a lawn company). And he also mentions preparing your food on Friday for 2 days (Ex 16:23). Also not to start a fire (Ex 35:3). And to gather together with others (Lev 23:3).
