Lake Superior Agate Hunting | An Underwater Rockhounding Adventure

- Join me on our first underwater rockhounding adventure! We head to one of Lake Superiors many North Shore beaches in search for Lake Superior agates, any other beautiful minerals we can find. As far as my snorkeling and diving for these treasures, I do not recommend this unless properly trained and have the proper equipment. Lake Superior is the biggest freshwater lake on the planet and it has a hard time warming up, that being said, hypothermia can set in very quickly and is not something to mess around with. If you plan to do something like this, make sure you have the proper gear and a buddy system set in place.

Those are some beautiful agates and jaspers. I vote for cutting the big agate. Just remember that you can easily get hypothermia in lake Superior in the summer because the temperature at the bottom of the lake only changes by 4 degrees from winter to summer. If the wind is out of the wrong direction the water by the shore can be in the low forties.

Do they make them in parka style? 😆 he freezes in the water. And yes the great lakes are very cold.
They do make some with hoods, im planning on getting a individual hood and a jacket to go over it..rather be over protected than not as much!

Just found this vid and that was the coolest thing to hunt underwater. Never have I known anyone doing that so this was a first. Superior has the best rock and to see it underwater is amazing. Another fun thing to do for sure. Thx again for sharing...

That agate at the 3:05 mark is astounding. And I know that chalcedony nodule will be gorgeous inside when it's cut. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get up there sooner.

We went to the tourist spots in duluth and didn't find much, so i took your suggestion of looking on gravel roads and we found a whole pile of them. Thanks for the good advice and great videos showing us how to find them.

@@AgateDad my dad was like that. I have a bowl of tumbled rocks in my house that we picked up in the UP when I was 16. Not many agates, I find, but great memories. That's what you and your wife are doing right now.

Arizona guy here always rockhounding , have purchased Lake Superior agates for tumbling an d fell in love. Red jasper very common here you can find 2' boulders with banding of white quartz through them, lots of chalcedony here also. Fire agates here and there but nothing like those LS agate. Great video.

Thanks for the video! I think I have to do some underwater hunting at Lake Superior too. It's usually pretty well picked over on shore, so I'll have to give the underwater a try.

@@AgateDad Not yet :) I need to invest in a gimbal or some device to record more easily while out there, as I often fumble holding my simple phone. I've almost dropped it a few times in the water. But I hope to! Maybe come September? Any advice on a camera or set up?

Hi, long time fan, I know this video is kinda old, but I have to tell you that I bought 800$ worth of wetsuit gear (hood gloves, boots, semi dry) and a nice big mask....anyway it's the best way to find agates, it's terrifyingly cold and very dangerous, especially if your walking out miles away and getting in. I hope you bring company if you start doing this on a regular! I hunt rocks in the E.U.P in michigan, and I have to rely on straight southern winds to go otherwise it very rough!
I also just dumped some$ into getting a dry suit and went the other day, the water was 36°f and didn't feel a thing!
Also some people get pissy when they see us out there because we are getting them before they wash up, I love it

5:53 I can see the purple!
That bigger one, if you hold it so the long sides face you and the short sides are the left and right, I'd cut maybe half an inch of either end, then cut what's left in half. I would wager there is banding in that darker region.

Nice pieces! However, don't cut the big one maybe you should just polish it and use it as a decorative stone or as a pendant or something! Probably even a necklace if you want! But it's all up to the people to decide!
Yeah and I still need to put together a polishiny system, so I think ill cut it to see if its work doiny anything down the road.

This was awesome! I loved it! Looks like you might need a wetsuit, tho, for the cold water. I agree that the one stone looked like it had an amethyst band running through it. All the finds were so pretty. Can't wait till you cut open the big one. And I loved little Noah, towards the end, gently nibbling on one end or the other of his banana, then just shoving the whole thing in his mouth. Then when Dad asked if he wanted to say goodbye, you just see the little wheels turning, knowing that now his mouth is too full to speak, so he waves vigorously. Too honkin' cute!
I was wearing a wetsuit, just not s full body, which is in the works. Haha Noah is a hoot, he at least was a good sport and wasn't shy! Haha love that kid!
Definitely looks like you got a better quality of stone going out a little further. I would say that was worth a little frost bite. LoL 😂 I would cut that one too, long and flat way 😉 just my opinion.

That was an awesome video. It seemed like agates were easier to spot underwater. You had some really nice ones and the jasper was gorgeous. Loved the little guy. He is so adorable!!

Lol the wetsuit actually helped me float but I forgot my flippers in the car like a knuckle head!
