Your channel just popped up on my feed, I subscribed. Now I have to try Hungry Lu's. If you make it out to East County, there are many Italian restaurants with good sandwiches. Bongiovanni's, Ottavios, Marechiaro's, and Gaetano's to name a few. All have pretty good Torpedo's.
Thanks for subscribing and the great recommendations! We’ll definitely check out those East County spots-Torpedo sandwiches are our jam! Enjoy Hungry Lu’s, and stay tuned for more! 😄🥪
I'm definitely Trying Hungry Lou's and Surf Side . I go to Pomas and love the roast beef , I did try the meat ball and was surprised how good it was , best meat balls in town
I'll try them out. Try Soluntos in Little Italy. Dominque has a very good thing there for many years. His family originally from Italy, they moved to New York and had a bakery and restaurant. They moved to Little Italy. Back in the 90's they used to deliver bread to Mr A's, which used to be the best restaurant in San Diego. Best Italian bread, as far as I'm concerned, Soluntos in little Italy. Try them. Thank you.
Solunto’s sounds like a must-try, especially with that history behind it! We love hearing about spots with deep roots like that. Definitely adding it to our list for Little Italy. Thanks for the awesome recommendation, and we’ll make sure to give it a go! 🍞🥪 Appreciate your support!
I just drove 10 miles each way to get the sandwich and it's really good, but the square slice was out of this world! Best square pie in San Diego that I've had so far, and I've been looking.
Poma's brings back fond memories of the early 80's - 90's when I lived in OB. Used to go there after a long run or after swimming to the pier. Just hits the spot.
That sounds amazing! Poma's definitely has that classic vibe, and grabbing a sandwich after a run or swim sounds perfect. Glad it brings back such great memories for you! 🏖️🥪
Olive Tree Market sounds like a great spot! We’ve heard good things about their torpedo and can’t wait to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation! 🥪✨
All three look excellent... definitely gonna try 'em. But, you guys gotta make the 45 minute drive up to Escondido and grab a #22 from Agrusa's. (If ya know, ya know.)
Thanks for the suggestion! We’ve actually tried the #22 from Agrusa’s, but we appreciate your input! It’s always great to hear different favorites from the community. 🥪😊
Totally agree-both are top-notch spots! 🙌 Hungry Lu’s Italian is definitely a masterpiece. You’re lucky to have it so close; we’d probably live there if it were by us! 😅

#18 is the Spicy Italian! It’s packed with flavor and definitely a must-try. We’re with you-there's nothing quite like a good sandwich! If you ever get the chance, definitely give it a go! 🥪👌
Hey guys love the show love sandwiches I grew up in Santa Barbara and we had the Italian grocery on the east side and really great Italian subs but when you guys were trying the first sandwich in San Diego you talked about the meet the bread but you didn't talk about the pepperoncinis sliced in a good Italian sandwich about pepperoncinis being sliced up and being into the sandwich
Thanks so much for the love and for sharing that Santa Barbara sub story! We totally get your point, and you’re right-pepperoncinis are key! Slicing them up adds that perfect zing to a good Italian sandwich. We’ll make sure to dive deeper into those little details next time. Appreciate the feedback, and thanks for watching! 😄🥪
Thanks for the recommendations! We’ve already been to Mona Lisa, so be sure to check out our video on it! We’re excited to try BMH in La Mesa in the future. 🥪👌
We’ve heard that the roast beef at Poma’s is supposed to be the best! We haven’t tried it yet, but it's definitely on our list for next time. Thanks for the recommendation! 🥪✨
We always keep it real! Poma’s definitely gave us some interesting reactions but we will be back there again 100% Thanks for noticing-and for watching! 🥪😄
Pomas has the best pastrami sub in San Diego! The bread makes the sandwich! They use Salutos Italian Bakery on India St. Been going to Pomas since '68. Happy Hunting!
Poma’s is awesome for sandwiches. However they use Solunto’s bread not Saluto’s. Got that people? Solunto’s…they are on India street in Little Italy and you can buy the bread at the counter there to make sandwiches at home.
Now that’s some serious history! Poma’s with Saluto’s Italian Bakery bread sounds unbeatable. Thanks for sharing-sounds like a true San Diego classic! 🥖🥪🔥
It's "Beyer Deli" off of Beyer Blvd. Reuben and the New Yorker as well as one called "The Man Handler". Just be prepared they are Cash Only. The true definition of a Hidden Gem.
@TheSandwichSnobs Beyer deli ,you will be so disappointed with their Italian sub. The locals complained and the owners stopped using provolone, capocolla and other essential ingredients that make an Italian sub authentic. It's no fault to the owners but the customers that have no taste buds...lol
We haven’t ventured into hamburgers yet-sandwiches are our main focus for now! But we’ve definitely heard great things about Nessy Burger and see it every day on our way home. It’s on our radar for a potential future channel expansion! Thanks for the suggestion! 🍔🥪
We are not sure! But if you find it, share it and we will add it to our list. Recommendations are so awesome for us because we want to try everywhere we can and show off the places you guys love too. SO keep them coming!🥪
Thanks for the recommendation! BMH in La Mesa is on our radar now. We love discovering new spots, and it sounds like they have some great sandwiches. What’s your favorite item there?
They’re pretty good. Once upon a time there was Giovanni’s deli in Encinitas. Jon Giovanni was here from Italy for many years and then disappeared, either back to Italy or another part of San Diego. Best sandwich I’ve ever had. Best food period I’ve ever had. It’s strange how different it can be...
Mona Lisa is probably my favorite in SD. They are always skimpy on the meat though so you have to pay for double meat if you want it to be good. Also by default they put mayo and mustard on every sandwich except Caprese so you have to make sure to tell them to not do that unless you want that. That’s not an Italian thing so not sure why that’s the default setting for sandwiches at an Italian deli. Should be oil & vinegar by default not mayo and mustard.
Ordinarily I would recommend my favorite sandwich shop Eric's sandwich shop in Escondido. However, sadly it burned down a few months ago. I'm still depressed.
That’s really tough-sorry to hear about Eric’s Sandwich Shop. It’s always hard losing a favorite spot like that. Hopefully, they’ll come back even stronger in the future. Hang in there, and thanks for sharing with us! 🥪🙏
Hard salami, pepperoni, capicola, ham, and provolone cheese. Lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, oil and vinegar, oregano, on a lightly toast Italian roll Perfection!
@@TheSandwichSnobs Sicilian sandwich spot. Fresh homemade bread and other items. I particularly like their breakfast sandwiches and their pastrami sandwiches

Do you guys think that your appetite gets skewed by the 3rd sammie? Regardless I'm going to try all three places. Maybe grab a sandwich for poor Stevecox3777.
That's a good question! We don’t think our appetite gets skewed by the third sandwich; we still aim to appreciate each one individually by always getting the smallest size we can and sharing that.
Surf Side Deli was an extra for this episode. It was Hungry Lu's vs Poma's as the main focus. But trust us! WE ARE GOING BACK! Surf Side Deli was amazing.
I'm confused with Hungry Lu's, where's the meat there's more lettuce, tomato and onion than meats? This looks like a Subway sub with better Italian Bread. Poma's doesn't look much better, I feel bad for you guys out there in California... you need to experience a Real Italian Sub like we enjoy out here in New Jersey where they actually add more meats than toppings. You guys are the best and I love your reviews!!!
haha! Well with Hungry Lu's the meat was so flavorful you dont really need to rely on piling the meat. Poma's, well we know what they are known for! East coast stuff in our future for sure!
@@TheSandwichSnobs That's awesome!! If you guys ever make it out to NJ I'd love to see you review plenty of places, but #1 would be Livoti's which has about 5 locations. So they layer the Italian sub sandwiches different, they slice the Italian bread in half and layer the meats and cheese from the bottom up, then putting the lettuce, tomato, onion with oregano, oil and red wine vinegar topping it off. I'll have to send you a picture, it's a work of art! lol
That sounds incredible! Livoti's method of layering the ingredients from the bottom up definitely adds a unique twist to the classic Italian sub we have here on the West Coast. We’d love to see a picture of that sandwich masterpiece! If we make it out to NJ, we’ll definitely put Livoti's on our list. Thanks for the recommendation!
You guys did not pick the real winner. Hands down Torpedo at Olive Tree is the best Italian sub in Ocean Beach. And a good runner up is the Italian in the OB Deli on Voltaire. Hungry Lou's is expensive, but I can understand why you would pick them. Poma's is okay but not in my top list.
Thanks for the recommendations! The Torpedo at Olive Tree sounds like a must-try, and we’ll check out the OB Deli as well. We appreciate your input on Hungry Lu's and Poma's too! Everyone has their favorites, and it’s great to hear different perspectives. 🍽️🥪
People go to chains for convenience, consistency, and affordability. They know what to expect, and it's easy. But local spots often have way more flavor and uniqueness!
@TheSandwichSnobs Before I retired, there was a local place that made their own bread and roasted their own meats. Their subs were larger, better, and less expensive than Subway. A coworker came back with Subway. I asked why. He said he was trying to eat healthy. Advertising works on idiots.
It’s always a bummer when a local spot offers superior quality but gets overlooked for chains like Subway. Freshly baked bread and house-roasted meats definitely make a difference! It's amazing how effective advertising can be in shaping our choices, even when better and tastier options are right around the corner. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Appreciate the recommendation! 🙌 A hot pastrami from Grab N Go Subs sounds amazing-we’ll have to check it out soon. Always on the lookout for the best in San Diego!
Mona Lisa’s #8 sounds fantastic! Oil and vinegar really elevate an Italian sub. While mortadella isn’t our favorite, we appreciate the classic ingredients that make it authentic. Check out the video we made at Mona Lisa's 🥪
@@TheSandwichSnobs Well I'm impartial to Cold Springs Tavern in Santa Barbara because I used to live there but it's also more about the beauty and history of the location, the Harley's and the live bluegrass when they fire up the Q. Just the whole scene really is something to experience for sure.
Cold Springs Tavern sounds like an amazing place! The combination of great food, beautiful surroundings, and live music really sets the stage for a memorable experience. It's always special when a location holds personal significance as well. Thanks for the recommendation! We’ll have to check it out if we’re ever in Santa Barbara!

Mona Lisa’s has the best sub. #8 with oil and vinegar. If an Italian sub doesn’t have mortadella then it’s not an Italian sub.
Mona Lisa’s #8 sounds fantastic! Oil and vinegar really elevate an Italian sub. While mortadella isn’t our favorite, we appreciate the classic ingredients that make it authentic. Check out the video we made at Mona Lisa's 🥪
Nothing beats a good tri-tip sandwich
You’re so right! A good tri-tip sandwich hits the spot every time. 🔥🥪 Got any favorite places to grab one?
Automatic Disqualification for Poma's. A real Italian sub, does not have Cotto or Hard Salami. Only Genoa Salami.....
We agree, but on the hard salami. Hard salami done right can be good. But yeah… the COTTO GOTTO GOOO!
@@TheSandwichSnobs both of you kooks have the finest facial hair available it seems😂. I guess the facial hair matches the eating habits.😅
@SOLDGREEN we can’t tell if this is real or sarcasm, but because we are optimistic… thank you! Haha
Sorry, fail on both accounts. An Italian needs to have Italian dressing. This isn’t Jersey Mike’s with this oil & vinegar garbage.
Fair point! A real Italian sandwich definitely deserves some authentic Italian dressing. Thanks for the feedback! 🥪👌
