I bought these today and they work better than what I expected. I modified them by taking an X-Acto and shaving off the tip for a finer point. Now I can get into small crevasses without overpainting the surrounding areas.
That's funny how so many will bash sharpies, but as a cosplayer, prop builder and toy modder, sharpies are versatile and well suited to model kits like this for small details.
Nobody in their right mind bashes it, the expensive brands have a marketing team all sit in a room where they come up with pro's and con's of why and what, then they hit up the groups and forums online they slag off all the competitors and hype up their brand, it's a common marketing tactic, and the brand fanboys do the rest, so if you ever see a fanboy bashing just sit back and know they are the ones the advert worked on.
I use these all the time. They also make a ruby red and emerald green. They work great for cameras. Never tried the real touch markers with these. Thanks for the tip.👍😁
im new to building and found sharpies to be useful almost on accident since i had no gunpla markers paint or anything to paint with just alot of sharpies at my desk. and found they work fairly well with what minimal use i have put them to even going as far as putting a very light coat over clear parts to tint them to the color i want when wiping away excess. but those metallic markers do look like something i will have to get in the future. since like you mentioned with a few people so heavy paint smells isnt the choice i would like to go with. so thanks for this tutorial ^Y^
I really didn't expect the Metallic sharpees to work SOOOOOO well, because it looks perfect on the detailing I did. They even already looked weathered down, but strong in color because it's a sharpee
The Metallic Red is fantastic for old beam sabers that were just cast in solid white plastic. The only real downside outside of smudge risks and slow drying times is that the fat tips prevent you from really getting into creases. _But_ if you have an old paintbrush lying around, you can press it to the tip of the Sharpie and quickly get it down in those gaps.
If youre not deep into gunpla and just want to get the most out of a kit this is a good cheap hack for the inner frames... I want to use silver on inner frame but not sure how or if it will work well with the matte varnish ill be using to finish my kit after painting. But it looks really good on a kits inner frame and it can be used for weathering but if youre painting at all probably shouldn't go this route... If you have a spair fine tip brush perhaps you could dap it in a puddle of the ink for hard to get spots. I have used this hack for inner frame in the past and had solid results... For best results its best to use the marker after assembly as your oil in finger tips can compromise the part or leave prints. Use your fingers to grasp the other parts you wont be painting with the marker.
I'm not into gunpla, but I'm an artist and I can tell you I've been airbrushing paint markers and gel pens with great success I've even airbrushed watercolour metallics, the thing is getting the mix right, I'll let you all mess about with that but try alcohol glass cleaner water and glycerine as a flow improver plus there are some good tutorials on paint mixing on here, if you can be bothered you really do get some good paint really cheap.
Since my last message I have used my SHARPIES and they are just like you said! They're my new best friend in my painting Arsenal. I have even made a Swatch on a piece of white tile add a few drops of 99 RPA (alcohol) for metallic washes! They're so versatile, I could write and write about their possibilities but I'll let you have fun finding them out for yourselves.The Bronze Sharpie is ideal for slight rusting effects on textured surfaces. To help them adhere more just wipe the intended surface with a clean cloth dampened with alcohol. Told you they are my new friend for painting effects. Buy some you won't be disappointed if you know how to use them. I have been looking for the NEW fine tipped SHARPIES, I have some great ideas for those... That's if I can find them in stock somewhere!

Rubbing alcohol? What kind of topcoat works well with this? Does oil based make issues bleeds or runs? Ps thanks for demoing the real-touch + sharpie.
Okay this is nice to hear because have bought a ton of Gunpla building materials, like Side cutters, exacto knifes with blades, and even grey and black Gundam markers because for panel lining, but the only affordable option I could get quick for metallic colors were the exact same sharpies as here. Think the only materials I have not bought are some red and yellow pens for details maybe even green, as well as some top coat to keep it safe when I'm done
I personally use Artline 999XF 0.8mm silver/gold and Artline 444XF 0.8mm white. But yeah, great, cheap and easily acquired alternatives for touching up small scale details without having to use paints and brushes (except for those tinee tiny vulcans on HG Gundam heads).
Could you not use a "real touch" gray on top of the Sharpie Metallic Silver coat to simulate "Gun Metal Gray" like you did the blue that you demonstrated in the video? Thanks for this video. I'm going to apply the technique to panel lining my foam dart blasters.

They are nice for small details but they ware off, especially the gold. I also you black sharpies with a ultra fine point for some detail and light panel lining.
If you live near a store called DAISO they have many types of cool pens and ink from Japan that are REALLY Strong, and just behave much different than the stuff we're used to. It's like Sharpie but 10x stronger! Great video, amazing what you can learn through youtube.
Nice CitrusFIX video! Have you tried the Artline Supreme metallic markers? I use them now more than Sharpies because they're even cheaper, have more available metallic colors (their metallic red/pink is my staple for monoeyes), and generally have brighter colors (their gold pops more than Sharpies especially against black or dark plastic). As for gunmetal I've been using ZIG Fudebuyori by Kuretake metallic markers, their silver is really this dark, metallic hue which I find looks great as a gunmetal alternative. Bit of warning, they behave much like Real Touch markers and take a long time to dry and even then rubs off easily. But a topcoat usually seals them in reasonably so yeah. Keep up the good work, I've been a fan since your HG 00 work (who knew HGs could look THAT good) and I hope to see more CitrusFIX tips. 👍
Citrus Up until recently I've used Fudebuyori metallic green for the Gundam eyes but really they look best on larger areas like rifle scopes and 00 GN elbows, knees, etc. But recently I've switched to the fluorescent yellow-green Gundam Markers since that color (for me at least) pops out better in the context of an HG Gundam's tinier almost just a slit like eyes. ☺

may i recccommend you some molotow liquid chrome markers? they come in a bunch of different tip sizes and are basically mirror finishes when applied. Granted they're fragile and should never be touched, i see you mostly detail silver for inner frame stuff so that wouldnt be a problem.
I tried this on a MG Shinanju Ova version for the golden colored details, it looked ok, but the paint from the marker kept peeling off everytime I touched it. I ended up buying the Gundam Markers from GSI Creos, the paint aplication is way better, but they do smell, and the tips an actually break pretty easily leaving a mess... Bottom line, there's no perfect tool in modelism
as an artist, i know that even the cheapest material can equal any expensive thing with enough practice, back then when the copics and touchfive markers didn't even existed in my country i used the sharpies to paint my drawings when everybody was like "oh no, you need the $500 markers to paint" nowdays i often see the markers being recomended among beginers and pros
I just went to my local Walmart and picked up a variety pack with a few neon colors only reason I wanted them was to color those disgusting clear pieces for the eyes and such.
I found a brand of Porous Point Pens that work even better than Ultra Fine Sharpies. Their tips don't dry out like Sharpies and they have a Metal Tip. They are called Triplus Fineliner by Staedler and they are 0.3 mm. The Dark Grey accents the panel lines on my Star Destroyer without looking too dark.

Hmm... Never thought to use sharpies. I do a lot of... Urban art and have been using Molotow markers for painting. The ink is more of an acrylic then it is alcohol based so, it stays better and dries in about the same time. Being a graffiti writers tool, they're also resistant to weather damage(sun/heat, cold, wet, etc.), as well. A bit more pricey, but they'll last for a very long time.
Sharpie ink is in a foam core, so that probably won't work. If you want cheap paints for brushing, try this stuff: amzn.to/2Gewq7b They're super thick straight from the tube, but they're pretty good if you add a bit of water. They have great coverage, and you can find them for about $1 per tube just about anywhere.
so I just bought the metalix markers from a gundam site. I've heard good things on them from other gunplay builders and some aos player (age of sigmar) was it worth it?

I’ve sprayed Testors Glosscote, Testors Dullcote, Krylon low odor Acrylic gloss over the metallic sharpies and have had no problems. These are available at Michaels and Hobby Lobby in the U.S.

+אנונימית אנונימי Topcoat is absolutely necessary, because the ink will wear off if it's not sealed in. I believe "permanent" only applies to porous surfaces, and plastic generally isn't.
Citrus But I've checked and they do have some permanent markers for plastic (and much better color variety then Gundam marker). Maybe these aren't one of those, I guess..
Cheap? What's that? Around here, even the gold/silver/bronze three pack stopped being cheap like five or six years ago. Used to be five to six bucks, now it's nine bucks in most places!! The only drawbacks to the metallic color Sharpies in my experience are that: first, these mofos *DO NOT* come in the ultra fine tip point...which would've been SO USEFUL!! Second, they don't seem to have quite as much ink as regular Sharpies. I tend to run through these faster than even the black Sharpie (which I use very often). And third, the tips are nowhere nearly as durable as the regular ones. They can get wrecked really easily, especially if you use them often.

Sharpie makes even more metallic colors as of 2019. The green, blue and red (it’s more pink like Zeon monoeye) and all work great.

I've also had success shaving Sharpie nibs to fit different shapes. This weakens them a lot, but it's not too bad with gentle pressure.

Do the parts need to be washed before applying the sharpies? People say washing helps paint to stick better to the parts.

If you don't coat it afterwards, the Sharpie will rub off easily.
You can also use the eraser to clean it up

well u cant use the regular sharpie, their color will fade off pretty quickly, you need the one with the oil based one
Have you tried using a topcoat (like Pledge Future) between marker coats?

Yes, but make sure to mask around the area you're going to sharpie detail as Sharpies have a big tip and usually overpaint.

I’ve sprayed Testors Glosscote, Testors Dullcote, Krylon low odor Acrylic gloss over the metallic sharpies and have had no problems.

But since it is mostly Copper I'll let it slide.

Do you have to top coat? Aren't they permanent?
+אנונימית אנונימי Topcoat is absolutely necessary, because the ink will wear off if it's not sealed in. I believe "permanent" only applies to porous surfaces, and plastic generally isn't.
Citrus But I've checked and they do have some permanent markers for plastic (and much better color variety then Gundam marker). Maybe these aren't one of those, I guess..
Cheap? What's that? Around here, even the gold/silver/bronze three pack stopped being cheap like five or six years ago. Used to be five to six bucks, now it's nine bucks in most places!!
The only drawbacks to the metallic color Sharpies in my experience are that: first, these mofos *DO NOT* come in the ultra fine tip point...which would've been SO USEFUL!! Second, they don't seem to have quite as much ink as regular Sharpies. I tend to run through these faster than even the black Sharpie (which I use very often). And third, the tips are nowhere nearly as durable as the regular ones. They can get wrecked really easily, especially if you use them often.
