Where were these grass mats in relation to the lake: NE area, NW area? My friend and I launched our kayaks this past Sunday from the SW corner as you did, but never found this type of heavy vegetation. The winds picked up in the afternoon so we didn't get a chance to cover the whole lake. We hit up the cypress trees as well and even worked our way to the grass flats, but headed back in after that.
+John Gomez It just depends on the wind because the stuff you see on the surface floats. So depending on wind direction it might be at one end of the lake one day and the other end the next. But right now I think most of the heavy grass mats died off from the cold so you probably won't see much until the spring time. And what I've found on the cypress trees is that you really have to work for those fish because most of them seem to be in the roots of the trees and you have to work pretty much every angle of the tree. Unless you have a little bit of wind then that can make it easier to find which side of the trees they are sitting on. Hope this helps and good luck next time you go out. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
