Down in the south East of Britain (Kent & East Sussex) we have Southeastern, which is quite unreliable, filthy tables, covered in graffiti, late, Unfriendly staff at some stations like London Bridge, older trains (Class 465 and 466s) are being treated horribly and Southeastern don't give a crap, they are running out of parts but Southeastern can't make more, most trains smell like piss, and overall Southeastern is a bad company

I feel so stupid. My girlfriend and me actually went from Paris to London by bus. It took forever. We had to wait like 2 hours to get into the shuttle train. And it took another 30 Minutes until all of the busses entered the train. The whole trip took 8 hours. I would have happily paid three times as much if I'd have known about it... xD

@@ce1834 When we returned from London to Düsseldorf (Germany) we took the ferry. It also took quite a long time. My girlfriend was also sea sick. It was just generally a stupid idea to travel to both Paris and London by Bus within a weak. We were so trashed when we came back. Flix Bus is really cheap but 2 of the three bus drivers were actual lunatics. The first one was a drunk Russian who had to slam the breaks at a high curvy bridge because he almost fell off and then a arabic french guy kept giving a scary speech about how we're all gonna die and I literally fell down to my knees in Paris to thank God. The second bus driver was an arabic french guy as well and he was speeding past everything like a lunatic. If I'd have known that the Thalys?-train from Cologne to Paris would only take 2,5 hours I would have taken that as well.

In 2005 I travelled from Paris to London by Eurostar train. The train passes through Europe tunnel between two countries. It was my good experience because I never travelled in a such long tunnel. The return fair is less then single journey, so I purchased returned ticket from Paris though I was not coming back to Paris. Engr Nabi Bakhsh Marwat Lahore

It's a shame we don't have something like this in the United States, But I feel the comments bashing the U.S. and saying we spend all our taxes on military are not quite true. The U.S. had a great rail system at one point. Before the early 60s, Private Railroads ran passenger services and rail travel was comfortable and fast (by 50s standards). However, with automobiles becoming ever more popular after the second World War, and the implementation of Interstate Highways, less people began to travel on trains in exchange for cars. Cars were easier for point to point travel, as many American railways were built during westward expansion, and therefore the routes were sporadic as towns sprung up on the frontier at random places (Unlike in Europe, where cities and towns were all already there, and all one had to do was connect them directly). Another blow to the industry was Air Travel. Americans quickly became fascinated with Air Travel, and companies forced marketing anywhere they could, knowing that it would dominate long distance travel. By the 1960s, passenger services with private railroads had shrank in number and size. Railroads were going bankrupt and eventually in the 1970s, the government stepped in, buying passenger equipment off of the surviving railroads and forming what is now known as Amtrack. There are a number of issues with Amtrack, but the two biggest ones are track rights, and funding. Amtrack doesn't actually own many lines. Most of the times the trains are running on tracks belonging to other railroads, meaning the other companies can prioritize their trains over Amtrack trains, meaning Amtrack trains will have to stop for freights to pass (unlike the opposite back in the 50s). The other issue is funding. Americans, as many already know, hate taxes. Since very few actually travel with Amtrack, why would politicians want to put tax money into it when they could spend it on other things (which can get them re-elected, which is the number one priority of every politician regardless of what party they side with). So yes, the U.S. is behind... very behind in some aspects, but I feel that much of it is because most Americans simply don't care about a high speed rail network. Let's be honest, Americans love automobiles, probably more so than other countries. We'd rather spend it on things like military, fixing our existing roads and railways, welfare, food stamps, immigrants and refugees, and paying off the massive amounts of debt we owe to other countries. And lets not forget the big salaries our politicians get along with their lifelong pension (something that they don't need). So if a majority of Americans don't want one then so be it. The world is not going to light into a ball of flames just because the U.S. spends their money on other things.

Travel by train or public transport leaves lesser carbon footprints than traveling by automobiles and planes. So if you believe in saving your planet , encourage your citizens to use public transport as much as possible.

To be fair, the distances do play a part too. Two hours on Eurostar from me takes me to three potential different countries (France, Belgium, Netherlands). Two hours even on a high speed train somewhere as big as the USA you’re quite likely still in the same state you started in. The distances are just incomparable to be fair.

We took the Eurostar out of here in June of 2018. We got there early but was told that due to a SNCF strike, the first Eurostar to Paris that morning would be the ONLY one. Thank goodness we got there early! We had just enough time to check into the one train, get our bags checked by the French officials, then run upstairs to the platform to get onto the train. I never got to see anything in the depot and had no time for any photos. Once we got to Paris, my wife was transfixed on our ride we had scheduled, I didn't get any photos at the other end either.
