On Dec. 6, the Feast of St. Nicholas, the children found their shoes filled with chocolate coins, a candy cane, and an orange. (They'd left them in the hall the night before when they went to bed). On Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we'd have Mexican food for supper and read Tomie DePaola's stories, The Legend of the Poinsettia and Night of Las Posadas. On Dec. 13, the Feast of St. Lucia, the children would take turns greeting the family members in bed with breakfast rolls and hot chocolate, wearing a crown of electric candles (a paper crown could be used, too). Each Sunday in Advent, we'd try to read a new Christmas story.
These are wonderful ideas. We add a tradition a year. That way we're only spending money on one new thing. This year we are doing the giving manger. Next year we will do a Jesse tree. My sister and I are drowning in kid toys and since parents and grandparents already give toys we are getting each other's kids Christmas PJs to open on Christmas eve. We reuse our decorations from year to year.
I love that you try a new tradition every year that is what we did when the kids where little and it helped us know what we liked! We do the PJ's too they are so cute!
I love reading the Gospel of Luke, too. My kids are at university now, but last year I added a candle to light while I'm reading. I got one with marks for each day of Advent that I got at a local shop for about $7. (It works exactly this year because Advent starts on December 1, but there's lots of room at the bottom to add days if Advent is longer.) You could also buy any cheap candle and mark the days on yourself. Last year was the first year I used it and most days I lit it while I was reading the Gospel of Luke and any other devotional material. I put it in a candleholder that I've had for years. It has some purple-blue flowers on it, so I figured it's appropriate for Lent. I really liked the added focus and the little bit of brightness it brought to that time.
Heather, thank you so much for all these wonderful ideas and links! I found you a year ago, and your videos have been been so helpful to me in so many ways ever since! You have made me aware of so many amazing Catholic resources. I am excited to try some of these ideas with my daughters (5 and 2) this Advent! Thank you, and God Bless!
That popsicle stick manger is so cute! We do an advent wreath, but we just do weekly readings. It's a Bible verse and prayer that has to do with the week's candle theme. We haven't done Jesse trees every year, but we're doing it this year! O Antiphons is fun, but hard because that week is busy. I prefer to do it as my own devotion. If I do it with the family, I do all eight at once and play the song.
