I use two wooden paper towel holders that my grandfather made many years ago. They're heavy enough to be stable, but they don't spin. Which is a problem, right? So I found a genius solution a few years ago. I bought a cheap package of disposable paint rollers from walmart. The long ones that have the fuzzy outside and the hard cardboard inside. I wrap my yarn around the paint roller and then put it onto the paper towel holder. Spins like a dream, and the fuzzy outside keeps my yarn from slipping off. I love this for many reasons. The easy spinning, the ability to replace rolls and projects easily, and the affodability. I have to admit I'm pretty proud of myself here. Lol. Happy crafting, everybody :)

My husband made me one back ... oh, 40 yrs ago. I used it for a long time. I was working on a thread bedspread.. . I like the idea of the counter-sink style. I've bought a bowl and like it more. I tend to make even my skeins, cakes, now. I always hated the knot that forms when the skein is ending. It doesn't take that long to make a cake of yarn. For the wooden ones I'd use that gripper material so it didn't slide on the table.

That extra magnet idea is brilliant! Thank you for doing all the research for us. I have another tip for those magnetic yarn holders. I found the base of the spindle too narrow for some of my yarn, so I made the base wider by unscrewing the base and putting an old CD in between the base and the dowel and then screwing it up again. It fit nicely, and it made the base wider. (Then I replaced it with two CDs back to back so that the reflective side was out, just to make it look prettier).

I used to be a centre puller - so much so that I can wind a centre pull ball by hand without using a winder but I would always be frustrated by my yarn ending up either over twisted or totally untwisted as I worked. Then one day I saw a video which was my eureka moment. It explained the problem of centre pull and then gave a very visual demonstration. They took a narrow strip of paper and rolled it up to simulate the ball of yarn and then took hold of the centre and pulled straight up. That strip of paper emerged as a tight spiral, showing how it was the centre pull causing my twist problems. I then got a yarn genie and have never looked back! I absolutely recommend them, also doing the paper experiment to see it for yourself.

Linda, if you're using larger skeins, definitely use the wooden Artowell ones she linked. But look around, they make a bigger size. I've got a double-header from them that has a bigger side that holds a Super Saver skein with tons of room.
For the single size, look at the product description of the one she listed in the description; there is a "plus size"/"standard size" option that you can select between. I thought this would be equal to the bigger size of the double-header I have, although looking at it JUST now, I see measurements on there that suggests the single version is just slightly smaller, which is really odd (given that they sell replacement spindles in both sizes, you'd think they'd be the same). Maybe that info is slightly inaccurate. Either way, both should hold bigger skeins with more clearance.

The spinners are set wide apart and I have no problem when using even my widest ball/cakes. The yarn doesn't get stuck. I thoroughly enjoyed spending this week with you and your family. My husband started deer hunting this past weekend and got his first deer of the season. He came home Sunday and we are headed back to our deer camp today to do more hunting (Veterans hunt) before all of the hunters get out there, I think this weekend, and really start to pressure the deer. He has a huge advantage during deer season since he's a veteran and gets to hunt first. We usually get all of the deer we need during this initial week. Congrats to Mark for getting a moose on his last day!! And by the way, that huge bull moose they saw was gorgeous!!

I use the Barva brand double spinner. It works fabulously. The yarn never gets stuck around the base. I think because the spindle is recessed into the base. It also has more space between the spindles than the double one you showed. I couldn't live without it.

I bought a paper towel holder to use for yarn, also. However, I use it to hold coned weaving yarns or crochet thread. It is easier to keep my yarn and thread balls from collapsing and tangling if they are wound around a tube. One time, I didn't have a tube handy, so I took a piece of thicker paper and wrapped it around a pencil. I slid the wrapped pencil in the middle of the ball/cake, while sliding the cake off the ball winder. Then, I just slid the pencil out. And then I started saving paper towel, toilet paper, and coned yarn tubes again! 😆

I just received the wooden double spindle one for my birthday in August. Mine is a darker wood & the spindles are wood but taller; the size of a Bernat Super Value skein. I'm making an Afghan where I'm carrying the yarn so this has been a fantastic tool for me. I'm using Bernat Super Value 440 yards each. I have not had an issued of them flattening out & touching. I highly recommend it.

  • @bluesonicstreak7317
    @bluesonicstreak7317 Месяц назад +6

As someone who HATES center pulling (I either have extremely bad luck with yarn barf, or something about my style increases the propensity of center-pull skeins to constantly re-tangle, but 1+ hour of detangling for every hour of knitting/crocheting has been my experience), I was recently in the market for one of these. I used to just nestle the skein on a bunched-up hoodie so that it wouldn't roll or flip. I got good with practice at pulling just hard enough to unwind without sending the skein flying. That still gets tough with cake yarn when it gets down to a tiny tube.
I watched your previous video on these as well as a few others reviewing the "Wool Jeanie." I had initially been going to buy the "lazy Susan" style, but I kept seeing people mentioning the yarn tangling in the base. So I went for the "pendulum" style instead, even though I didn't initially like the look of the yarn swinging around. I got one of those wooden Artowell/Flykey ones, the double-headed one that is two different sizes. I'm in Canada, but I can see from your links that the same one exists on the American Amazon. If you're an Amazon affiliate, you may want to add the link to that one separately - you show a double-headed one at the end of the video, but it looks like the arms are the same size. You want the one where they are DIFFERENT sizes.
Reason being, that brand makes a "jumbo" size, which I believe is equivalent to the bigger side. (For the single version, select "plus size" in the listing description.) The jumbo/plus size will comfortably hold a skein of Super Saver or a Caron One Pound with ample clearance in all directions. I assume it should also fit the Pound of Love from Lion Brand, but I haven't tested it. I haven't had the Super Saver I currently have loaded on the jumbo side fall off even with some hard shaking, so maybe the magnet is upgraded on that one and you got old stock with the ones you have, idk. If not, your magnet solution is GREAT.
(I also don't know why they don't just make a double-headed one that is jumbo on both sides...I will have to get a single jumbo one coming up because I have plans for a blanket that is a one-pound style of yarn and the RH Granny square yarn and I was hoping to fit them both easily on the double header. Oh well.)
I love this thing to death already and have bought more spindles for it so I can have all my WIPs loaded and ready to swap at a moment's notice. Admittedly I haven't gotten to the end of any skeins yet, so maybe a unique problem will arise at the end. But even then, I think it will be worth getting. I was using a Caron cake on it the other day and it was unwinding so smoothly that I never had to look over at the cake once. Game changer.

I got a plastic yarn holder with the magnet arm and was very happy with it…apparently so is my autistic grandson 😂. He loves watching it o back and forth. It wasn’t much money only $4.99 on Amazon at the time, so I gave it to him. I bought a better one or so I thought, I mean it was only $14.99, but it had a very weak magnet, couldn’t hold 3oz of yarn 🤦🏽‍♀️. So I tried a third time and got the GROWLING yarn holder after looking for another one. I came across Cinnamon Stitches video and she had a GROWLING. After hearing that magnet *CLICK!* into place I knew it was the one. Again I went to Amazon and purchased the Mahogany version for $23.99. I 🥰🥰🥰it! Krista, thanks so much for this review. I'm off to Ali Express to order N52 magnets! I especially appreciate your last comment about knowing which yarns require caking & which don't. I tried using a spindle on a 10 oz skein of LionBrand Ice Cream Big Scoop. BIG mistake 😢. As soon as I removed the paper band the yarn decided that it wants to look like one of those onion-shaped domes on top of Russian Cathedrals! I wish there were a way to send you a pic just so you could laugh as hard as I did 😂
And because now it's shorter than the spindle, it *does* get caught at the top as it spins around. My solution to that was to pull out several feet at a time & crochet as much as I could B4 pulling out more yarn. I ended up taking it off the spindle & spinning up a couple of cakes from the middle, then adding post-its to number them in usage order & remind me to pull from the OUTside & attach the inner center strand to the outside of the previous cake. Hopefully that will keep the color progression somewhat even, though it's not a true self-striping yarn.🤞🤞🤞 At least I'll be able to finish my project with a only modicum of unacceptable adjectives 😳. Thanks again for a most informative post. You're a star. 🌟💖

This was such a fantastic video, I had to subscribe! 😊 I also have the magnetic spool and love it. My main issue with it was that my yarn would sometimes get a little bit stuck where it wraps around the bottom of the ball. My fix to this was to make a little cone out of card stock with a hole at the top of the cone large enough to fit the dowel. So, I first slide the cone down the dowel to the base, and then I slide on the ball. The cone gives it a little more clearance on the bottom so the yarn doesn't get pinned beneath the weight of the ball. Thanks so much for the magnet hacks!

Some tips about those holders. If you are adding the magnet, use some strong glue, such as Gorilla Glue, and glue that magnet into place, even tho it is stuck on, just be safe and glue that puppy. I have both types of yarn spinners and honestly, they are more of a pain than a help to me. They spin so easily that the yarn continues unwinding faster than I crochet, leaving a puddle of yarn tangled around the base of the spindle base type or a puddle under the hanging type.
I feel yarn bowls are far superior to the hanging/spindle holders. I tested by using a plastic mixing bowl with rubberized base. Worked perfectly and I could use different bowls for different sizes of yarn balls. Tried my ceramic pottery bowls, and again perfect. Have since graduated to real yarn bowls that I found on Etsy. I have 3 favorites from Etsy that I absolutely love and I suggest shopping there and supporting a small business.

While that N52 magnet holds itself on pretty well, you could still glue it in place to avoid the choking hazard. Just be very sure you're gluing the correct sides together before applying the adhesive! I recommend E6000, but hot glue might work just as well. Superglue isn't a good choice in this case since it dries into a very rigid plastic and may crack over time due to micro-stresses of the rod getting pulled off & on. E6000 has a bit of flexibility when dried, which is ideal for things the might expand & contract with temperature or moister variations (i.e., wood) and handles these micro-stresses much better than a rigid material. You're definitely going to get some on the wood, so you might as well use a glue that is well suited for it! Also, superglue requires moisture to cure, and since magnets won't provide any to the curing process, you run the risk of an ill-cured center portion of the glue.
I use E6000 & N48 magnets when making needle minders, which get pulled on & off quite regularly, and I haven't had one fail me yet!

I have had the wooden spinner for a few months and it is a game changer . I used to use a yarn bowl with my yarn cakes. But I’m a lazy crocheter so didn’t want to do that. With my spinner I just place my yarn on the pole and I’m ready to go. I love it. I do find that with some balls of yarn…they kind of lose form and then the strand can get stuck.i guess I’ll have to make those balls into cakes..But ..I should say I do not use center pull as I don’t like yarn puke. I’m wondering if I did center pull on those balls that slump..maybe that won’t happen.
Thank you for such an amazing video ! You did so much legwork for us all and love that you went on a magnet hunt to improve your spinner!
