    Indian history is a very politicised subject. We should be very careful about the political assignment of the historian. If it is from a right wing historian ( those people are pretty rare in number) , they will demean the later muslim Empires like Mughal Empire and hail native indian empires. But if it is from left like this vedio clearly is, they will try to say that the native indian kings were not tolerant and they were violent and the Muslim empires really made india progress and prosperous etc. Before these Arab influence came, india was filled with barabaric stuff and inequality and uncivilized pagan religions. That is the narrative they use to claim that the foreign influence made india Better and progress. This is exactly opposite in America were right wing hails the white people and left hailing Native. All are political

Right wing people are looking for good historians but not getting. This is not the case in other countries I think. In India it may be bcz we were a pro socialist and pro-left country upto 1990s and govts promoted left wing acadamicians and historians.Nehru and Indira etc had supported Marxist historiography and was interested in such thoughts. The govt system and society didn't teach or view Marxism as something bad instead it were very much promoted unlike the European countries. I have seen this video earlier and believe me in most of its part it is just a propoganda to defame one of the greatest king of the world. It talk about castism then why his grandfather chandragupt maurya became king while he was related to lower caste. Buddhism at that tym want to glorify their dhamma and that is why Ashoka was shown as extremely brutal. If he was that brutal why would he done so much of social work related to river ,wells, roads,trades etc. If you are a king , you have to remove those elements who want to kill you.

      bro we are talking about nearly 2300 years ago so it is possible that both the aspects of ashoka good or bad existed because historical records are not that much clear of that time like we have of our medival history so its not like that all the things in this video are wrong its just a presentation of some records of that time from various scriptures and texts found.( FA XIAN and XUANGZANG were the great scholars and travellers who wrote about him) ashoka has destroyed many texts and planted his own scriptures in order to manupilate history. That,s also true that he worked a lot for budhism after kalinga war and budhism was at its peak at that time.

    Some are true some not. Ashok never desired for the throne. His brothers were unsecured because ministers wanted him to take the throne. His father bindusara didn't want that but ministers had power to put Ashok on throne. His brothers tried to kill him many times but failed and finally one day they had sent one assassin to kill him but accidentally he kills his mother. After that Ashok brought wrath upon his brothers and slaughtered them and took the throne. He was in so much rage that he decided to conquer the whole world and crush whoever go against him. Kaling refused to come under his empire so Ashok attacked kalinga but when he visited the battleground after the war it brought so much sorrow to him and he took the path of righteousness. Devi was his first wife who was a daughter of a merchant who followed Buddhism. That time people of his empire were more into Jainism. Many people didn't accept Devi because she followed Buddhism. It was Devi who brought Ashok close to Buddhism. When took the path of righteousness he ordered his children to spread Buddhism and peaceful life all over the world. After his transformation he also encouraged vegetarianism. His favourite food was peacock before adopting vegetarianism but he gave up killing and eating animals. This is one reason why still a big number of people in India are vegetarian. It didn't have to do anything with religion because non vegetarian eating is also mentioned in Vedas. It's all because of Ashok because he took the path of peace that included no killing of animals too. He also prohibited killing of cows because cow milk had become an important part of vegetarian diet. Gradually all these things have become a part of Hindu religion in over 2000 years. It is absolutely right to call him Ashok the righteousness because after his transformation many big changes came into existence. Though he followed Buddhism but he also supported other religions equally. He gave everyone equal rights and opportunities in him empire without discrimination. But he remained strict with criminals and invaders. They kept fearing him even after his transformation. His administration was one of a kind and his empire was vast and had a single man rule. His ministers were very loyal to him and his younger brother too loved him. During his last days he was more close to his third wife kaurvaki. He didn't ask his children to follow his legacy and become an emperor instead he told them to follow the path of Dharma (righteousness).

    Interesting video... I feel the narrator has presented a lot of things as "facts" without acknowledging the bias and uncertainty of those stories. For example, he talks of "Ashoka's Hell" as if it's historical fact, but doesn't mention that Buddhist narratives of that era often exaggerated the violent part of a figures' past to make their conversion to Buddhism (and nonviolence) more dramatic. There are many tales that follow a similar structure (Angulimala etc.) It's more likely that both the violence of pre conversion Ashoka and the nonviolence of post conversion Ashoka have been exaggerated by storytellers of the time. Overall, it's difficult to extract exactly what happened 2000+ years ago from sources who were not interested in accurate record keeping but rather in interesting storytelling.

    • @sonamtshering194
      @sonamtshering194 Год назад +1

      Agreed. I am a Buddhist myself, but I feel the Buddhist chroniclers were not objective with their records. • @anntann2
    @anntann2 2 года назад +58

    The narrative may be fairly accurate. However what I do hear the in this video, is a disputing of 'facts'. So in my take-away here, the moot points are a) was Ashoka more cruel than we knew. b) was he truely reformed c) This point I find a bit silly - are the good/great things he did Unique! ?? No says the narrator. I mean the narrator thinks just any ruler would do those things like build hospitals etc. So should we discount the good because others would have done the same? ummm....so Taj Mahal shouldnt be considered a great monument because anyone could have built it 😀 Gandhi shouldnt be considered non-violent cos anybody can be non violent. Arpatheid and Mandela - same thing!

While his ancestors after chandragupta maurya cldnt keep the kingdom together but he regrouped the states again. His wife and brother were already actively spreading Buddhism within India and he was influenced by the changes that brought about in his brothers life thus after he saw what a war can do he too started practicing Buddhism….In Indian history people didn’t sit and write about things a lot sadly… so most information unless you read through historians or visit these places to know better everywhere else it’s miss represented.This is just stupidity of Romila thapar. It's a very simplistic assessment of a very complex historical figure. Ashoka's influence on Indian society can be seen even today. He laid the foundation of a welfare state with a reasonable code of conduct that citizens could abide by without too many problems. There's very little literary evidence that can back up the claims of the narrator. Ashoka's reign is known mostly by his edicts and the narrator completely discredited those as propaganda while giving far greater importance to stories(hearsay).

    Indo Greek History is actually very interesting and one of real peace and harmony. There was actually a branch of Greeks who ruled northern India for like 2 centuries, and gradually integrated with Indians. The best examples of this would be Budhha statues from the period, that appear in a Greek God setting, one of such cool rare things that can happen.
    Also there are sources that say Sinhala people exist today just because of expeditions by Ashoka's son Mahindra to Sri Lanka. Sinhala people are thought to be descendants of the sailors and missionaries from Bengal and Kalinga, who went with Mahindra to Sri Lanka and gradually settled there.

    This video is very misguided.
    As a scholar of history i desagree on most of his points.
    The talk of Ashoka being cruel Ashoka or chandashoka was only mentioned in ashokavadan ( a Buddhist book) in this book Buddhist scholars tried to glorify Buddhism and in order to do that they portrayed Ashoka as a cruel ruler and when he came in contact with Buddhism he changed.
    There's no archeological evidence on ashoka's hell and no other contemporary sources tell us that.
    If want to know more about Ashoka the great you should read prof. Romila thapar's work on Ashoka. She is a world class historian.
    The narrator of this video specifically chose those false stories to portray a false image of Ashoka
    Ashoka didn't killed his 100 brothers because there are evidence suggesting that his brothers were governor during ashoka's reign. The reason behind ashoka's change of heart is his genius plan of controlling India and solidify it..
    To control a geographical area that big you need big army and for that you need money so Ashoka developed his Dhamma and engraved it on his rock edicts. This way he controlled a waste geographical area without an army rule. Is reduced the cost of army.

    If you want to know the real truth about historians like Romila Thapar and Iftan Habib read works from Belgium based world famous scholar Dr Koenraad Elst. To quote Dr Elst "you wouldnt guess it from their polished convent school English, their trendy terminolog or their sanctimoniousness but the likes of Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib or Gyanendra Pandey have blood on their hands..."

    I was taught the the history if India in school History class starting from 2000 BC...from the reigns of mauryas, chalulkyas, guptas, khiljis, dukhlukhs, mughals, pallavas, devarayas etc.,..But whenever I see their reign of influence, my region is not part of it (the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala). I still wonder why we were never captured by those powerful kings who conquered every northern and himalayan kingdoms they laid their eyes upon. Maybe we were too strong with our spice trades with the western world and could afford mercenaries from all over the world to defend our riches. Only the disloyal, dishonest, backstabbing British were able to include us in the map of the Union of India by deceitfully killing our spice trade and our rulers. Sometimes I wonder whether the "Southern India" could be among the richest regions in the world if we were not weighed down by the corrupt Netas and their gullible subjects of North India. But then I remember 3000 year tamil old poem I was taught which goes "yaadhum oore, yaavarum kelir" meaning "The entire world is my Country and every human is my Kin" and think may be there is a reason for us to be together after so long. Despite all that I wish to see an united world one day irrespective of ideologies.

      Lol another super proud so called Tamil with their dravidian politics 🤣🤣 do u believe the history written by the colonizers Brits ur masters there is a reason we r together is because we r same civilisation not just you infact the whole Indian subcontinent is one civilisation sadly we aren't together and we got divided time to time but now no division will happen so if u thinking anything crazy like that then you shouldn't don't be a fool of ur petty politics

      Lol I have one answer to break your false sense of pride.
      No one cared about capturing or occupying Tamil Nadu because it's too far, so mostly kings from Tamil Nadu were asked to pay tribute. Tamil Nadu was just a cash cow.
      Lol they weren't independant.

      Lol, that's because North India was gateway to East Asia and part of the Silk Route. Whoever controlled it, controlled the Europe-Middle East- Asia trade route. So be it Greeks,Turks,Afghans, Persians or any other power of that time, they could only enter through NW Fontier on foot. Which meant that South India was always protected from Invading forces as North became the first line of defense. Which also meant that South India was able to protect it's culture,wealth and kingdoms for a long time whereas North largely remained unstable. Secondly, since North was the gateway to subcontinent, it made sense for the ruling powers to put more army and resources up North. It was only much later with the advancement in European navy that coastal regions became vulnerable to outside forces.

    This is nonsense . Asoka was a great emperor real pia dasi means loveable for people. This nonsense history is spead has been spread by wrong historians . Plz go on UNESCO site . if u need to know the authentic history, with references and with evidence. Asoka was never a cruel King. He attacked Kalinga because some robbers used to rob the Asoka's businessmen in the way during thier journey. He was Asoka not Ashoka. He laid the foundations for Indian constitution as Dr BR Ambedkar had the idea of his system of rulling all the rules and ideology . The circle which is visible in the center of Indian flag that is the mark of Asoka Chakra . He was great only not a cruel

    from the time this documentary started and defamed ashokas mother his birth his looks his brutality and defaming him whichever way possible i can feel that this documentary has no substance and just a propaganda of leftists to again deglorify hindus or india and indian. i this osr has some leftists in their patrons team because many times i hv seen that they recommend them worst types of documentaries about india and they should avoid their suggestions if they want to give good authentic reviews about india and also dont want to loose their credibility in the eyes of their subscribers.
    the visual quality of the documentary was also pathetic. its so boring and so obviously full of propaganda that i feel like puking after watching it.
