"Fiumi di parole" (Rivers of words) is a song by Italian duo Jalisse, made up of Alessandra Drusian and Fabio Ricci. The song was the winner of the Sanremo Music Festival in Sanremo, Italy, and later went on to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 in Dublin, Ireland, being the last Italian entry in the contest for over a decade.
The song is a dramatic ballad, in which the lead singer tells her lover that "rivers of words" have come between them. She claims not to understand what he is saying anymore, and believes that she is losing his respect. Despite this, she tells him "I'll give you my heart, if you want/If you can, speak to it now", implying that there is still some hope for the relationship.
The song was performed ninth on the night of the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, held on 3 May 1997, following the Netherlands' Mrs. Einstein with "Niemand heeft nog tijd" and preceding Spain's Marcos Llunas with "Sin rencor". At the close of voting, it had received 114 points, placing 4th in a field of 25.
Following the contest, Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) withdrew from the contest and did not return until 2011.

They should have won. Italy has so many times sent these stunning songs, this, "Gente di Mare" and "I Treni di Tozeur" should all have won, but didn't. So sad, I have missed seeing Italy at the contest every year, I'm so glad they're back this year.

The duo has been ostracized from Italian music industry since 1997, when they won the Sanremo Festival - and they've never been able to get back to any music contest. They've always stayed afar from music majors and they've paid a heavy price for their choice. The Jalisse duo went broke after their brief and intense success, and, being so talented, it's a total shame.

E pensare che la loro ''colpa'' fu soltanto quella di aver vinto Sanremo senza alcun tipo di raccomandazione...

      Why were they ostracized?

Not sure if you are totally right they are still and have never stopped performing. As for being ostracised why??? Italy never entered the contest from 1997 until 2011 so they couldn't take part again. Terrific entry fantastic vocal performance live in 97 in the point theatre should have won.

@@cinzanobianco1 It wasn't about not being able to participate in Eurovision, they were ostracised here, in their own country :" they were kept away from national contests, everyone was mad at them because when they won they were almost completely unknown and weren't associated with any major label, so paradoxically they, who were the ones who had the least connections to big names, were the ones who were accused of literally everything, of being protected by powerful people, of having plagiarized other songs...all bs of course :" Jalisse are still mad about all this and rightly so imo..
Personally I would switch our 1990 victory with them winning in 1997 any day

Hori law you are correct toto cotugno did not deserve to win in 1990 and his arrogant attitude as host the next year was poor. Jalisse were brilliant allesandra drussian was flawless vocally in Dublin 97' how this song didn't win or at least come a close 2nd is a joke. To say it sounded like Roxette is an absolute joke it's a million times different.

She is still fabulous in this live clip but his singing is monstrously out of tune. But on the night in 97 they were indeed fabulous. One of my firm faves

Absolutely flawless vocal performance by allesandra in the eurovison in 97 it was my absolute favourite. Fabio didn't sing in 97 as he can't sing to be honest but they had 3 backing singers in the point theatre Dublin that night. Excellent quality eurovison entry.

Absolutely nonsense I've listened to them both and it's not really let's be honest here. There's a little bit of a similar sound at the start but thats a ridiculous comparison. Many many songs sound a little like other songs.
