I think after watching the Netflix doc with Scott Carson it’s obvious why you keep a guy like that around (if you can afford it). He’s basically a mental health coach for the team. Brightens everyone’s day
Goalkeeper is the loneliest position to play. You really don't know the galf of what goalkeepers have to go through just to get a game. Being a 3rd choice isn't so bad considering the amount of keepers who struggle just to get a job.
Mostly signed on the cheap, in a role where they will hardly ever need to play, because you don't rotate keepers like you do other positions. Most on this list are English, or otherwise fit the homegrown criteria too. So for a top club who are usually playing in European cups each season, it makes perfect sense.
Scott Carson what a legend. Single handedly destroys the hopes of an England golden generation and then loafs off the oil money success of Man City. Goat.
What I've heard about Marcus Bettinelli is that he's a great guy to have in the team and a link between the 1st team and the coaching stuff. Also doing his badges at Chelsea. Top guy
Best job in the world - great salary, hang around with celebrities, free personal trainers to keep yourself in shape, prime dining and healthcare paid by employer, travel around the world and live in five star hotels, watch the game from the best seats in the stadium, no responsibilities and no worries about ever screwing up.... tell you what, it's not a job but a dream come true. Third choice keepers are the real G's.
Stuart Taylor was the King at being a number 3 gk he never rose past back up keeper but was always characterized as a third keeper. Although he did win a league medal for playing 10 games in the 2001/02 for Arsenal
Remember Marco Ambrosio in Chelsea? He deputised for the injured Cudicini and Neil Sullivan...he was crucial for the win against the Arsenal Invincibles in the Champions League quarterfinal
Slight correction, Karius signed for Newcastle as second choice keeper after Dubravka joined Man U on loan, he only became third choice once the Dubravka loan was terminated. He also played the cup final because Pope was suspended and Dubravka was cup-tied.
Mark Schwartzer won back to back premier league titles for Chelsea and Leicester. The only time in his career he got silverware for his league performances.
Raimond VanderGouw went from third choice to first choice in 1999-00 due to how bad Bosnich and Massiamo Tiabi was Also Fabien Barthez did find himself third choice in 2003-04 after Tim Howard was signed that summer and also behind Roy Carroll . Roy Carroll has spent quite a career not being quite first choice after leaving Wigan for Manchester United over 20 years ago and only retired recently. Stephen Bywater also had quite the nomadic back up keeper role and was never really first choice wherever he went. Peter Shilton was registered as a player with West Ham in 1996 putting him behind Ludek Miklosko and Neil Finn which was surprised considering that he was about 46 at the time, West Ham would later exchange him for Les Sealey I believe from Blackpool and Les was in his 40s by then !!!
@@Retro-Football-Club les sealey banished dullness where ever he went , it was sad when he died that young, especially as he had 2 sons at West Ham at the same time he was coaching there
I'm sure I remember Southall playing for Bradford against Liverpool, last game of the season 99-2000 and helping them stay up ( and preventing Liverpool from qualifying for the CL)??
In Spring 1990, Jim Leighton was Manchester Utd no.1 but then famously got dropped for the 1990 FA Cup final for Les Sealey by Alex Ferguson. A year later, he was on loan at Arsenal as their defacto number 3 keeper behind David Seaman and Alan Miller. He never played for Man Utd again
Just to let you know, neither Nick Pope or Martin Dúbravka were injured for the league cup final against Man United. Pope was serving a domestic ban for his handball against Liverpool, and Dúbravka was cup tied, having played in the cup for Man United earlier that season.
Wow.....what an interesting and informative video, thanks it goes to show 'looks can be deceiving'....3rd choice goalies chances of getting a start in a competitive match- they would still need to keep their fitness up....just in case- plus by staying around the club they can prove valuable by keeping the confidence up for any new signing that find themselves on the substitutes bench.....and also could easily find themselves as a goalkeeping coach (as their mindset would be invaluable) for short notice or as long term position! No shade.....but when I played at what was then amateur level, I reckon with little technical work I could have done a similar role myself, (I wish!) Hahaha!!😎🏆
Up until 2023 man united had 5 goalkeepers David De gea £375000, Dean Henderson £100000, Tom Heston £57000 and Lee Grant £30000 Plus highly rated under 21 goalkeeper Nathan Bishop on £2500!! £565000 per week! There was absolutely no need to have that many keepers.
Robert green won the 2nd tier played premier league football and got into the England squad during his time at Norwich I think that's unfair to say his career took off after this
I've always thought the 3rd choice GK should go to a lad from the academy. De Gea only got a chance at Atletico when GK 1 and 2 were injured. He then came in and did well and Atletico made £20m from him. Imagine they'd had a senior 3rd choice at the time?
The 3rd choice goalkeeper is usually a goalkeeping coach also. Lads from the academy with potential are usually loaned out ASAP or become the second choice keeper.

It’s AI, well spotted guys. It’s not quite perfect and we are trying to refine it. However it struggles with non-English names. We often have to misspell them in our script to get our AI guy to say them. Unfortunately there are a few it just can’t say 🤷🏻♂️ still for now it’s much better than our own dulcet tones. Hope it doesn’t spoil the video too much 🤘🏻
@@Gaslighter893 Not at all. It’s no secret, It should be plainly obvious. Lots of channels use AI. Regardless we are happy to interact when asked 🤷🏻♂️ no skin off our nose.
Lukic wasn't a number 3 intially he was number 1 for Arsenal for years he came back that's when he became number 3 but I don't think you can class him as a number 3 at heart that was Stuart Taylor after Almunia arrived at Arsenal and spent the rest of his career at number 3 despite being quite a good keeper
Tony Coton was the best keeper never to play for England, and in my humble opinion is to this day the best English keeper since Peter Shilton. In the same way Clemence got the nod over Shilton in the 70s, for god knows what reason (other than Peter Swales was on the FA international committee and didn't want to pay Watford the 350 grand City would have owed them if Coton pulled on an England shirt) TC was never selected. Less error-prone than Seaman or Martyn, and an absolutely brilliant keeper. When he was at his peak in the early 90s, he and Schmeichel were the best keepers in Europe
The third goalkeeper role is the job you need in life
I think after watching the Netflix doc with Scott Carson it’s obvious why you keep a guy like that around (if you can afford it). He’s basically a mental health coach for the team. Brightens everyone’s day
And he’ll probably end up retiring at some point and becoming one of city’s goalkeeper coaches
Carson will absolutely end up becoming part of the coaching staff when he retires.

Those elbow pads as well. Nothing like it anymore

What a job! You get big money for turning up to training and sitting on the bench. Third choice keeper is the best.
Basically you get paid for Training and hanging with the boys. Alright for some
He’s more of a goalkeeper coach rather than a match day player
He makes the team better and we all love Scott

There's a big difference between criticism and blatant death threats in Karius's case.....
