Old time mechanics tricks can help find out what’s wrong without takeing every thing apart .1 way to tell if rings or valves is problem run compression test then put oil in then run the test again if compression goes up you need ring if not valves.
I have a 1985 xr 100 got it brand new i was 12 my first bike still have it oringinal and title to need to rebuild the top end bent the vavles put a hole in the piston because it was knocking came off a jump and it was done love thatbike lot of fun lots of balls for a 100 xrs kick ass someday i hope to ride her again

Very informative! I like the info about the rings. I just acquired a 2001 XR100R that was smoking really bad. It looks like the piston and the rings are cooked. I'll have to remove the top ring to check the coning per the video. Thanks for sharing.
bought a crf100f tonight the inlet valve clearence was so big its a wonder the thing started but got it running sweet now , i like ur vids and worrk keep it up !
hey benjadastar, rewiring isnt that hard if your familiar with basic wiring. but it really depends on why your rewiring the bike and for what reason.. for instance if your trying to make the bike street legal with tail lights, turnsignal and a headlight your going to need a big stator "power producer" so you can push the watts needed.. hope this helps
good question, you have to pull the head studs out by unthreading them from the block.. takes awhile but isn't that hard. then you should have ample room.
Their is another do the same thing without taking the engine apart that is do a compssion test to get baseline of low put oil in run test again if it goes up bad rings if stays the same valves are bad works engines

Can you tell me how to disassemble the camshaft holder/journals? I have to remove the valve lifters to put in the new head of my '01 XR100R. Thanks. Chris
could be a few things as in life. haha id check the gear lever that your foot pushes for stripped teeth its the most common problem.. then if you have to you can take the case apart and inspect the shift fork and detent ball.. its just a lever internally that goes from gear to gear..
i just bought a 1979 xr80 and it wont shift past 2nd well it will but you have to wiggle the shifter around could it just need adjusting or could it be somthing bigger and more expensive? please anwser i cant find anything anywhere
If I can see the clutch lever moving on the outside of my engine case but the clutch doesn't engage when I pull the lever on my handlebars, what might be wrong ?

Blow compressed air into the ports while the liquid is around the valves. You will see bubbles when the valves are not seated. WD-40 works great btw

use alcohol or thinner to check valve sealing, its' thinner. ;)
How many time does the piston last ?
smoking 4 stroke is usually a ring issue.

It wasn't the rings that had the compression off it was the timing all so y the valve was bent
