That looks a 100 times better than painted hinges. Nice job. I’m getting ready to take paint off hinges that are 100 years old. The hinges are so thick and strong. If I could find some thing that massive, it would probably cost me an arm and a leg. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you so much. I purchased a 1924 colonial home with six sets of beautiful French doors. The previous owners painted over all the brass fixtures, from the doorknobs and keyholes to the hinges. I’m making it my life’s purpose to restore them to their original glory if it k!lls me!
You saved my door knpcker! If I had listened to the man at the hardware store I would have to replace the door to restore it! It's gorgeous! Thank you so much!
Great video. I'm a big proponent of restoring what you have rather than replacing. This seems very easy. I wonder if putting a baking soda paste on non-removable parts may work somewhat. Having painted a lot recently, I know that most of us paint over the hardware because it is too much trouble to remove it, but removing it is really the way to go.
I’m considering doing this in my apartment, I have one day that just had the hinges replaced and the shiny polished metal looks way better than the cruddy white paint!
I LOVE YOU!!!! Now I know what to with that ugly gray A.C vent cover that looked worse one year after I carefully painted it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love this so much! i had NO idea! i cannot wait to try it... i did not want to spend $300+ to replace my original-to-home door knob and door knob back plate, so i did a quick search, found this and am SO excited! not just to save money, of course, but to have the ORIGINAL hardware... i'm going to go hardware crazy over the next couple of years! :)
Without taking us to when the "Greeks and acnient Romans started painting doors" blah blah blah, this is the most informative and straight up video for the job. I congratulate you and thank you for telling me how to do this task.
What would you recommend for air vents? Ours are so caked over with paint that it’s difficult to open and close them. I don’t know if the screwdriver trick would work to even make contact with the screws. These vents are disgusting 😢
If I use this method for cabinet door hinges and pulls what should I do to prevent rust forming on the metal after removing the paint with water and baking soda?
Amazing video! Question- if you're doing this for a 65 year old house renovation and have 12 doors (36 hinges & 108 screws), do you need to do each door one at a time or are these interchangeable if its all from the same brand? I'd love to put them all in 3 or 4 large stove pots and do all at once, but wont know which door theyre for...
Amazing!!! Question. My new apartment’s mirror closet doors’ gold frames have been painted!! The paint doesn’t look good and I would like to remove the paint. What do you recommend so I don’t damage the gold frame?
Awesome, never thought about boiling them, was using a heat gun, which was a tad messy, when you have about 6 or 7 doors worth of hinges to do, great vid :)
any alternative is lead paint is suspectable? my house is 1890 and i dont think boiling the lead paint off the hinges and skeleton keys locks would be a good option
@@natelarge i ended up getting some a few weeks ago, wore gloves etc. ended up with a allergic reaction all down my arms for 3 days. some of the chemical must of splashed on the very upper part of my arm i guess i dunno. but the hinges didnt even look good when i got them mostly down to the metal so i gave up. im just going to paint back over them
I have wooden roof beams that have been painted over. unfortunately, also the metal that holds it and I can't loosen them because then my roof collapses is there a way to get the paint off without taking the metal off the roof?
You know you can just put anything with latex paint in water-heater temperature hot water and it peels off, right? You don't need to boil it. Latex is, for practical purposes, just rubber. Leave it in a sink for 10 minutes and it peels off. You can finish it off with denatured alcohol, if you like.
I have found this doesn't work very well for hinges that were spray painted. I've boiled mine for an hour plus, and they still had a fair amount of paint on them.
@@nirradicalthey are definitely being sarcastic and commentating on “the landlord special” title that was given to the cheap “shortcut” of just painting over every thing
Man! I would give my eye teeth to find the cheap brass plated steel latch cover plates-on their own! Not the strike plates, the cover that goes around the latch. I can't seem to find a source.
I just painted mine 😂😂😂 they were ugly to begin with in my defense...but i didn't think to open and close my door while drying so now they are even uglier and chipping 😖
Best video on the entire planet! You have helped a single mom restore the painted hinges on her kitchen cabinets!!
Thank you so very much.
Dude, this is the most helpful, straightforward efficient video for the exact information I needed down to every crucial detail
That's the best compliment a guy could ask for.
It was deeply satisfying when you just PEELED off the paint like it was nothing! Great tip. Nice see of hand tools too.

Top tip: Add your baking soda before you heat the water! ;-)
Great tip!
Has anyone tell you you’re awesome? I’m sure they have. Thank you for this. Simple and straightforward. ❤ 👍

I’m the same great video! It eats my lunch when I see paint on door hardware it’s a better look when the hardware is paint free.
I love the little pieces of advice along the way. You didn’t leave anything out. Thanks!

This is EXACTLY what I needed!! Thank you!!
I'm getting ready to de-paint a lot of door hardware so this was so helpful! Thanks!
Wow such a straightforward helpful video love that you reused what you’ve already got and how simply this was explained
Great video 👏 Short sweet to the point. Thank you, very informative.
I’m considering doing this in my apartment, I have one day that just had the hinges replaced and the shiny polished metal looks way better than the cruddy white paint!
It didn’t work out well for me, but I discovered that the painted hinges didn’t match the rest so I ended up replacing them all anyways! Thanks still!
I LOVE YOU!!!! Now I know what to with that ugly gray A.C vent cover that looked worse
one year after I carefully painted it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great video! What type of polish are you using?
it was a chemical guys auto polish nothing fancy
Now the hinges are beautiful! Nice work 👏🏼
Thank you! 😊

I was looking for something else and found your video. Now I have another project. :)
What's the best way to dispose of the water? I live in an old house and may be dealing with lead paint. 😬
thank you! i had to fix the landlord special and this was driving me crazy
Thank you - very helpful

Is the polish a brass cleaner or what is it? Thanks. Peggy
It was an automotive polish.
What brand polish did you use to restore the hinges?

Amazing!!! Question. My new apartment’s mirror closet doors’ gold frames have been painted!! The paint doesn’t look good and I would like to remove the paint. What do you recommend so I don’t damage the gold frame?
Can you do this with solid brass?
What kind of polish did you use?
That looks like cheap generic automotive polish from O’Reilly’s
Great video, though just wondering how much less/more energy and cost needed to restore comparing to replacing with new ones.
Awesome, never thought about boiling them, was using a heat gun, which was a tad messy, when you have about 6 or 7 doors worth of hinges to do, great vid :)
Will thus work on door knobs and will I need to remove each one or will soaking with hot towel do the trick?

there are some chemical paint stripers that some use.

As long as you’re not reusing the pot you boiled them in for food it should be safe
@@ankereisenman4824 wouldnt the heat produce some sort of lead fumes so to speak?
@@MelodicsRareMusicVid you only get lead fumes (gas) if you’ve got the lead in the liquid state.
Can you please link the products you used? The polish and the lubricant? Thanks!
For the lubricant he said 3 in 1 oil or use sewing machine oil.
Excellent video 📹!!!
Will this work with lead based paint?
Great tutorial. Thank you for the time and effort you took to make this video and share it with us. Greetings from Croatia.
Very helpful, but show us what you used to polish up the hinge plate, please.
Excellent video. Cheers.
Is this safe to do if tested positive for Lead Paint?
What kind of polish should be used?
can baking power do the job too?
You have saved my day thanks a lot ❤
Thanks! Worked for me.

chemical paint stripper can remove paint.
Does this work if the paint is oil base paint?
I would bet it does.
How long do the hinges take to cool off before taking the paint off?
can i do this with pieces of iron that has paint?
Great information! Thank you. Even I can do this.
Thanks for this. So helpful.
Very nice!😃
thank you!!!
What kind of polish? Shoe ? Tooth ?

As a landlord, I am confused as to why you wouldn’t just add more paint on top. Same goes for light switches and electrical outlets.
Are you fucking kidding?

Excellent video!
Who in their right mind paints door hinges? 🙄
Land lords 😊
The Wife
Clearly the people that lived in my condo prior to 2022 😂😂😂
The tweaker who told us our house
Lazy people
Does this work on door knobs?
yes
Thanks!
This method helps with small piece , how i remove paint from a large surface ? 😵
Great if you can take hinges off. Mine are welded on to a metal door frame.
Hopefully this works for my hot comb. Burned a hole through my own toilet seat cover 🤦🏾♀️ can’t find any tutorials for this unique situation lol
Same concept with oil based paints??
I don't suggest tapping the hinge to avoid paint chipping, but otherwise a great video.
muchas graciass, great video
Thank you! New subbie here! Take care.
The metal fixtures for the wood rail posts can't be removed.
Wow.

Ty friend
Who in there right mind paints fire door labels?!
Everyone in the UK because they couldn’t be bothered to tape it off.
I’ve done boiling vinegar and hated the smell!!!
How about a wall oven someone painted. Blue. Horror. ?????
There is a special place in hell for people that paint over hinges
here! here!
And deadbolts. The key won't work..

Hinges are not cheap $12.00 a piece
Time is money and new hinges are cheep. If it was a antique then ok but 99.9%. Nope
Didn't you just waste your valuable time commenting instead of making money? -_-
Ha. And by the way, it’s cheaper to just fix it , instead of buying every little thing you’re “ too busy” to repair.
Thanks for this! Very helpful.
