  • Marina's are notoriously HOT! We DO NOT have marine air conditioners. So we had to get creative to survive the Texas summer while living at a dock. We're sharing what we have done to keep our sailboat cool in this intense summer heat.

    I live near South Padre Island and it gets seriously hot here too. I live in a duplex and I keep my AC set at 77. Though it gets up to 78 often. I use ceiling fans to keep the humidity at Bay.

    Well, I am working on the boat on the hard in Maryland, and It is hot and humid. My body has acclimated a bit, normally it is about 84 when I go to sleep and about 77 when I wake up. Basically, miserable, hot, and sticky. With hatches open and fans blowing it gets about 94 down below during the day. I am ready for the day we splash, and I can have sub 80 degrees during the day!

      @Spoondrifters  2 года назад

      Ooh that sucks for sure. We used that big AC unit for the three years we were on the hard. It was still hot but it helped. ❤️

    We keep our thermostat at 78 deg. all summer, and we live in central Fl. We also use blankets at night. It's been about 90 outside every afternoon . It's hotter in Tx. and other states .

    We’re guilty of working in the AC and coming home to a hot boat. It’s brutal. I wonder how long it will take us to accumulate to the ambient temperature while sailing. Oh wow, that’s a crazy storm. We had one like that a few weeks ago.

    • @Spoondrifters
      @Spoondrifters  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, that makes it hard for sure! I’m not sure I’m ever going to get used to 90 + degrees without AC. 😂

    Could you tell us the measurements for the hatch ac cover. Thanks

    • @Spoondrifters
      @Spoondrifters  2 года назад

      Hmmmm. Do you mean the insulated part? It would depend on your hatch size. Basically, open your hatch to the right angle. Measure for the side pieces and the top. Todd glued and screwed the insulation together. The fabric we wrapped it up with was an old sail cover we had laying around.

      We take them off each time we leave the dock. It takes about 2 hours to get the boat ready to go. We won’t take the A/C with us when we leave Texas but we will keep the sunshades.

      @@Spoondrifters Alaska in winter you'll have no issues with cooling, but I wouldn't recommend it in a fibreglass boat 🤣
      There is always the summer in the northern hemisphere and summer in the souther hemisphere, cross the equator in spring and autumn approach.
      When at anchor, shade and ventilation, boat usually points to windward so wind catchers are useful.

    Make sure not to run those aircondioners at to low of a setting it will cause the coils to ice up and it will not cool as well
