    Most of the vocals we love are doubled, tripled or otherwise layered into a production-perfect sound... Especially with aggressive vocals and heavier music!
    Learning how to double your voice well can save you a ton of vocal heartache and actually save your voice because you start to realize that THE SOUND you've been searching for lies as much in the execution of good production techniques as much as it lies in the performance itself!

      Right?! It was really important for me to put out a confidence building video and demystify the "produced vocals" . I noticed people get down on themselves because they don't sound like recordings, but in reality we're not that far away!

      @@chrisliepe Mostly people get frustrated after first recording. I think you doing great job showing people "the insides" of processes. All these doubling, back vocals, various tehnics tricks. It's very easier to demotive people than to inspire. Thank you.

      I've found that if I try to sing in the most natural way, I automatically replicate my delivery on the double takes. They come out very similar. It's a little trickier if you have to do something you find technically challenging.

      The best thing I’ve found is learn your song in and out. No reading or hesitating. That way you can play with it. Doing different levels of loudness and changing your distance to the mic even hitting different frequencies with different takes

    Doubling is a must for me! Although I cap it at around 3 to 4 takes. Anymore than that is excessive for what i record. Plus, you can't double vocals when performing live (as far as i'm aware), so i like to keep it at a minimum

    I do this but also copy the original track and then phase it by 1% this creates a hamonistic double up . If i want to create an echo i move the copied track forward enough untill it starts its delay and use this with another vocal recording, and it comes out brill

    Any time I double vocals, it's a hit or miss. Timing and pitch control is very important to land layered vocals.

    Only need one take (which you can also build by taking the best bits of several takes). Then copy & paste.

      No it doesn’t work that way. You need the multiple different takes for the different textures and imperfections that come out with each take! Copying and pasting would just make the single take louder.

      Not really. That only puts your vocal into a space where doubles create separation and mass.

    Does anyone know what the pan levels are set at? Where the first 2 takes straight up the middle?
    Maybe the last 2 tracks were 100 L & 100 R.
    Maybe the middle 2 were at 80 L & 80 R.
    I’m still learning.

    Doubling is easy… but if you’re in a homemade booth that’s a small box… don’t bother attempting this lol

      Totally depends on lots of factors though... I've heard vocals recorded in very small closets and doubling/layering can sound GREAT!

      @@chrisliepe I guess yeah it would depend, I’ve had quite success doing so when I loaded my booth full of random things to create a reflection , but I’d say microphone would also be a big help, right now I’m using an at4050 and it’s just not working for doubles at all in the box lol

      @@rylandweet7750 Switch to a dynamic mic like an SM7b and your space will matter MUCH LESS and you're vocals will sound way better in that small space!

      @@chrisliepe yeah I tried the sm7b , it was nice but the foam created a nasty sound , without I still get some of the box, I just actually put 2 socks over my at4050 and it’s actually giving me the sm7b sound but better , I use to do this with my old at4040 back in day but man it sounds nice!

      It all depends on the placement where the sound is generated. If it sits too much under your voice-box instead of above, you might hurt yourself (cookie monster). I'm sure Chris uses a technique that works for him. Lots of compression ("lifting something heavy") and fry. :)

      It would just be louder and not wide and textured. We need the subtle differences between takes to create the rich texture you hear here ! :)

      It's the same recording so panning left and right will just end up sounding mono because the waveform is identical

      not the same at all! the actual doubling provides all the width and texture that you love and appreciate about these types of vocal performances. If you just copy and paste it, you'll just make it louder. :)

      You need the different textures provided by each unique performance. Copy/paste just makes the single performance louder
