    If I ever do sing, I usually mono double. I can barely hit a note but when I mono double it, the slightly out of tune-ness on both tracks cancel each other out a bit lmao

    • @RoyThompsonAudio
      @RoyThompsonAudio  3 года назад +17

      Definitely! If the vocal is just OK, a double can really help beef it up and smooth out some of those infrequencies. This is exactly why John Lennon liked doubling! It made him feel more confident in the final product.

    I’ve heard when doing the mono double to have one be the “main” and be at a higher volume and then add in the double to taste, but also to pan them very slightly like by 5/100 which effectively separates them by 10 and makes them even less phasy

I can’t afford a good program, mic, or studio sessions so this is a great feeling like a game changer. I feel confident in music but my mixing was what always gave me anxiety

    Excellent. I’ve been recording in ProTools since 2005 and this was perfect advice. I do a lot of doubling. Sometimes the best second track for the situation is one that you listen to by itself and think, ‘nah’. But when you stack it with the main track, the parts, or mood, that seemed off really play into the feel and widening effect. They pop out just enough to catch someone’s attention.

    Soooo I've been a huge fan of Type O Negative ever since I was old enough to own my own CD player. When October Rust came out it blew my mind and I stressed so hard to figure out how peter was able to get his characteristic tonal sound (timbre hes almost impossible to emulate but his tonal style was dope.) I later in my teen year learned a suuuuppper easy version of my fav personal style of this in which you mono double at 100% then repop same raws full stereo double at 50% or lower to taste. It doesnt give you the full choir effect just this weird full spacial effect that I cant quite describe. It's literally just like two clicks and two pans, unreasonably easy. You can do this with a gaming mic and audacity - I know bc I tried just to see what would happen. I highly suggest you try it. If Type O isnt a jam you're used to think MCR I'm Not Okay vocals - not a big emo fan but the concept is there. This can be used from modern pop, to 80s goth, to 90s shoegaze, to modern and oldschool sludge/doom metal. Give it a twirl, it's super easy and actually really fuckin fun to play with

    when adding more layers should you lower the volume at all? specifically on the choir double since you have a true duplicate doesnt that make the double track louder than the main track or does it balance out since its 100% panned left/right?

    • @RoyThompsonAudio
      @RoyThompsonAudio  4 года назад +13

      Great question, Jason! Depending on the pan law of you DAW, you can loose a few dB just by panning the tracks. The short answer is: it depends. Usually, I find doubles and harmonies can be anywhere 3-9 dB lower, sometimes more depending on the structure of the chord. Are you simply layering for a little more vibe and weight..or do you need to FEATURE some of the harmonies..experiment to find a blend that works for that song!

    Great video. Lots of information with no dross. Quick and to the point. The vocal(s) I used on a song was by accident, but I liked it enough that I kept it. I was doing a cover song and did the vocal track. I wasn't super pleased with it, so I opened another track and did it again. By the time I was done, I had 5 or 6 of them, but I always soloed the last one I did. While I was trying to mix down, I accidentally unclicked the soloed track and heard all of the other ones too. I liked the way it came out and kept all of them on the final mix.
