@@DonnyBartoo No worries, try that out and let me know what works for you. When I'm mixing bands and different vocal styles I play around with which eqs go before which compressors. I generally have 3-4 eqs and 2-3 compressors of some sort
Looking forward to it!! I'm running an sm7b into a Scarlett 2i2, would you let a vocal hit the yellow on an interface like that as well? Or save that technique for something with a "better" pre amp (ik the Scarlett is fine for my purposes haha), I've been arguing with myself over that for years!
The scarlet has decent conversion but the pres aren’t amazing so I would hit yellow on peaks but I would not live in the yellow like I do on my UAD. Stick with green and hit yellow at max and then add your colour in the plugins and saturation.
Awesome thank you so much!!! This channel is a treasure chest for bedroom metalcore makers I hope it starts to blow up soon, and it is super cool of you to take the time to respond to all of us
No problem at all. I feel like metal and hardcore is nothing without a community of some sort so I have some ideas planned to bring everyone together. And to give as much info as I can. I was watching a Podcast with Craig Reynolds of Stray and Matt Garstka and (on the topic of teaching and giving information out) Craig said something along the lines of “the worst thing that can happen is that music will get better”. So that’s the philosophy I’m going with
Hey! Awesome video man! I was curious about your recommendation. I run a sm7b (with a Kaotica Eyeball) , to a cloud lifter, to a volt 1 interface. Keep up the good work man, and thanks for the knowledge!
@BrendonKPadjasek I actually love the thing personally! I do have a small amount of treatment in my home studio, but the eyeball definitely gives me a dryer, more isolated vocal. Ya, it's a bit expensive, but it was worth it for me. Better then trying to diy somthing.
@stabzthegiant that’s really cool. Yeah there’s so much involved with sound treating a room that it’s much easier to go that route. Super cool I never heard of it until you mentioned it
When I record more singing oriented vocalists, I'll do my dub vocals by stepping away from the mic and it makes them pop like crazy. Totally different eq curve, and having the room sound puts the vocals in a different place automatically
U87 into a neve 1073 into distressor into back of a 6i6 bypassing focusrite preamp. Ttying to get a nice distortion from the preamp. Yes its a trested room
@BrendonKPadjasek it's extremely transparent, your recording sounds how it actually sounds rather than being colored by the mic.I got one after watching Eric rutan use one for George Fischer. Combined with the 1073 it's a very good sound HOWEVER I'm trying to get some distortion from the preamp after watching nail the mix with bogren. I'm still new at this tbh
@Fartinhalerr that’s an awesome set up. I used to have a 1073 and 1081 at a studio I used to work at. Beautiful mic pres. I would definitely push them to saturate them. They sound amazing with the colour they add
Thanks for the helpful video! I've just started recording some stuff, got my guitar and bass tracks down and I'm looking to do vox next. I'm not sure if I just suck at screaming or if it's the microphone/equipment. I think I sound pretty good when I'm not actually recording, but don't we all? lol. Anyway, I have an old Alesis iO2 Express with the +48V Phantom Power turned on, Gain about 50%, using a Blue Microphone Baby Bottle SL in Reaper. Would love some recommendations!
It’s more than likely the mic in that case haha. Cheaper mics distort quick and few mics can handle the shear volume. The shure SM7b is a classic for screaming if you’re looking at getting a new mic
I like your workflow, not often you find producers user Ableton for metal! I wanted to ask your opinion on recorded audio being auto warped. I recorded vocals for the first time yesterday and ran into an issue with vocals over a gradual tempo change. I couldn't work out what was causing the glitchy artefacts in the vocal clip until I realised it was being warped on the fly. I was wondering if you have ever ran into this problem?
Eh thank you very much! Yeah I wish there was a "turn off auto warp" function. There is for importing audio but not recording. I would just turn warp off. Usually I will hold shift, and select all the vocals and then double click on the wave form, while still having them all selected, and turn warp off for all the clips. And then IF I need to warp something I just turn it back on. That or I change the algorithm to Complex instead of Beats
That’s all you really need. I unfortunately don’t have any experience with Presonus. Do you like it? As long as you don’t clip on your focusrite you’ll be good. Their conversion is actually pretty decent. Do you have any saturation plugins?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I love Presonus. I will say it’s the only one I have experience with though but have never felt the need to switch to anything different. I have a few. Mainly use Soundtoys Decapitator and Escalator (Black Salt Audio).
Yeah decapitator is my go to for vocal distortion. Do you use it on your parallels? If you’re comfortable with your DAW and you can do everything you want to easily in it, theres no reason to switch
@@BrendonKPadjasek I haven’t used it on parallels for vocals. Used it for my drums. but I’ll have to mess around with it for vox. Thanks for the tip! Love your stuff. First discovered you watching Live at the Roundhouse. Immediately thought: this dude is sick asf.
Thank you! I love the northlane guys as a band and as people. Had the most fun playing in that band and Im so glad to see they’re killing it still. Definitely try it as a parallel for vocals, as well as a parallel for kick , snare , and Toms. Make a parallel track for each to bring more snack out of the drums
My question is how much volume should the clean vocals have and how much should the rough vocals or screams have. Clearly screaming pushes the sound to go red and can cause clipping
Yeah I would avoid clipping at all costs unless you’re running into a standalone all along preamp before the interface. Some sound great when pushed. I try to aim for both the screaming and singing to land in the same peak volume. Obviously singing is a lot more dynamic and can have much quieter parts , but if you’re on a cheaper interface just barely hit yellow for both
Hey man! Big fan of your work since the first Structures EP! Love your channel so much. I've been performing vocals in various projects for a while now, but finally got a Rode Pod mic after seeing some shoot outs with the SM7B. I have an SSL2 interface and was curious what you might recommend for recording vocals as far as any tips with my setup
Thanks so much for checking out the channel! I’ve never tried the rode mod mic or the SSL2 but I’ve heard great things about the mic. As for the interface, seeing that it’s fairly low priced I’d imagine the pres aren’t amazing so definitely don’t clip it and I’d likely even just touch yellow in your DAW when it comes to gain staging. Often more budget pres don’t saturate well but it’s hard to say without trying it
@@BrendonKPadjasek thanks so much man! Appreciate all your input. I got the SSL2 a few years ago when I was just getting into recording and just got it because the pre-amps were slightly better for guitar tracking as opposed to the other basic interfaces like the Scarlett (also have a solo for traveling purposes) On the topic of interfaces though - any ones you would recommend that would be under / around $1K USD that might be a suitable upgrade from my SSL?
@perpetualwindburn oh that’s good to know! I always love the SSL gear I’ve used and was always curious how that specific interface sounded. I’m personally a huge UAD fan so I’d personally hold off and Abe up to get an Apollo of some sort
No worries at all! Glad you found help in it. It’s tough, for sure. What kind of vocals do you do? Maybe in the future I’ll do a video on it. When I figure out how to put it into words haha
@@BrendonKPadjasek I'm the same way with struggling to put it into words. I started learning to scream listening to Northlane Singularity so my lows are pretty similar to Adrian's but I could never master his highs with the pitch. My voice cracks like I'm 15 again. I can do the like goblin type highs that Chris Motionless does lol but when I try to add pitch everything goes to shit. Maybe I'm trying to force it with the wrong technique idk
Yeah it’s a very different vocal style. I suck at the typical “lows” mine just sound like my mid scream but lower so it must be a vocal technique thing. Cause pitch screaming came naturally to me. It just requires learning at least a bit of singing technique to hit pitches that you want to hear. I’m still not a great singer but the lessons definitely went a long way
@@BrendonKPadjasek I'm a decent? singer I guess but with my lower register it makes it pretty hard to hit the highs I want. Hopefully someday I can get lessons and become a true chad
Not bad. I’ve used the at2020 before. Probable the Rode is better for screaming, although I haven’t used it before. I’m assuming it’s built to be similar to an SM7B
Great video! What kind of sound treatment do you have in your space? Looking to record vocals from a spare room, not sure how much is needed? I would likely use SM7B or SM58
Thankk for checking it out! I'd 100% go SM7B and I have a carpet on the ground as ell as quite a few acoustic panels along my walls. But even if you only make a few acoustic panels it'll make a huge difference. How big is your room?
@@BrendonKPadjasek No problem, thank you for replying! So it’s a decent size, about 15m2 I’d say - definitely going to have a rug and sofa etc (when I move in) which will soak up some of the reflections but just want to know how much I need to do beyond that really. Thanks!
@@jyoutube1233 Yeah not too much needed. If you'd like, you could even build 3 acoustic panels and create a box where you mic lives. It'll have basically no reflections. I prefer the acoustic panels on the wall to make my whole room better treated
@jyoutube1233 no worries at all! I’ve done both before and either will work great. Sometimes I like the room sounding a bit roomy too as stepping away from the mic about 3-5 feet for distant vocals can be super cool at times
I have the Shure SM7B, Focusrite Scarlett2i2 and I am recording in Studio One 6 and looking for advise one how I can get the metal vocals sound. What daw or set up should I use? Let me know please. Needing help thanks !
I have a video specifically all about mixing metal vocals as well if you wanna check it out. There’s unfortunately too much to type when it comes to mixing anything ahaha. Distortion and saturation go a long way. Especially distortion on the auxiliary / send tracks
Thanks for the video, I have an SM7B connected directly to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, I want to record something like Linkin Park, rap and screams. It sounds very low and I needed to put a compressor as a plug-in to increase the volume of the recording, what do you think?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I am using fl, When I scream I can easily reach 6 dB without even saturating or putting in any plugging, but when rapping I only reach 12 dB, do you think I should use a compressor to increase the volume of my voice before recording it? (I know fl is not the best for this genre)
@SUKKUBYS I’ve never heard of that. I would definitely avoid clipping it on the way in and even avoid hitting yellow as some cheaper interfaces don’t saturate well. Does FL studio have built in saturation and distortion?
I dont know if your still giving recommendations, but im using an SM 58 with a pop filter, into a cheap ass behringer Uphoria UM-2. Then my chain in reaper in this order is headcrusher audio assult, JST Gain Reduction deluxe, stock reaper reverb, stock reaper delay, then stock reaper eq. If you have any recommendations for moving the chain around or even new plugin or interface recommendations, that would be awesome
Interesting. Personally I would suggest upgrading the mic to an SM7b if you’re looking to upgrade anything. The sm58 doesn’t capture screaming vocals very well in my experience. If that’s too much I’d suggest throwing a DSer before any compression and then throwing one at the end of the chain as well. That way you control the sibilance before and after just to make sure you’re grabbing those harsh sibilance. And I personally would put any EQ before the compressor. Soothe is also a great plugin for controlling some of those harsh frequencies
@Tyson_Guitars I haven’t personally used the Lewitt, but I would say keep working with what you have and save up to get an SM7b. It’ll be worth the upgrade and be a large step up rather than getting another more budget mic. You can still make the sm58 work, for instance Rage Against The Machine recorded vocals for their first album with it and it sounds great. They just have a lot of honk to it, so even if you just remove whatever mid frequencies that are the problem, before compressing, you’ll be in a better position
really great vid, thanks for making this Brendon! Im getting computer noise/static being picked up by my mic, audible both in headphones and on recording. any idea how I can solve this?
Brendon, would you agree than an sm7b/cloud lifter would suffice for vocals in a metal mix. Or any better options you may suggest to have the best result going in to working a project.
scarlet solo, sm58, dirt broke using anything i can get for free or for "free". OTT, ReaEQ, Gain Reduction, ReaGate, Sidewidener, ValhallaSupermassive. My issue is how i cannot seem to get my vocals to not sound lofi-ish. Seems to work ok for my Darko Us covers but the metalcore stuff needs a more delicate touch and i have no clue how to get this sounding beefy but not compressed to fuck. seems like any reductions i make to compression make it inaudible. not tracking it very hot at all, doesnt clip. my vocals are stupid loud usually so im careful to not record with the mic too sensitive. Thank you brother!
A lot of tone also comes from auxiliary tracks / sends with a lot of distortion on them. Keeping your vocals clean but the sends heavily distorted. And then blending them into the original track
@@BrendonKPadjasek thank you! I actually rearranged some things the day I posted this comment and posted a cover on my channel with the new mix. I really think putting gain reduction before Ott helped a lot. I'll also look into what you're suggesting thank you brother! 💜💪
I have a tascam 24 track that I plug directly into, don’t have a computer to download plug ins. I have a hard time with eq and am not sure how to set it?
No problem at all! I have a Scarlett octo pre and I notice that it starts to saturate in an undesirable way when you push it so definitely stay in the green on the meter and occasionally hit yellow. It’s workable when it’s not being saturated and then mix it to taste later
Strange I thought I replied to this a while back. That is quite the set up! I'd personally push the pre a bit as those saturate quite nicely. Find a great balance of input gain to output gain. Don't be scared to push that 1176 and get like 8-12 db of gain reduction. I like a ratio of 4 or 8 a lot of the time and go with a fair fast attack and fast release. Usually my release is slightly faster than my attack but they're both living around 3-5 o'clock. And let the la3a just kiss the compression a bit, like 1-3 db. And it's hard to say what to do with the never 551 as I don't know what your vocals sound like. Hope that helps
Definitely use a pop filter with the 2020 and if you can, tape or use elastic to place a pencil on the pop filter, right over the capsule of the mic. Those tend to get harsh plosives so if you place the pen ice or straw or something to split the air from hitting the capsule you’ll be in good shape. And make sure you’re not clipping as the pre amp likely doesn’t saturate well
Hi there! So, I'm saving money to upgrade my current setup which is: m-audio solo track as audio interface, shure sm58 and an Asus pc. I use audacity as a software. As long as I stay in my low vocal register everything sounds sweet. The problem is when I hit higher notes: the sound becomes detached from the instrumental, very cold and plastic-ey, I don't really know how to describe it. But it's bad. What do you think the problem is there? I'm about to replace my old pc because it's cr4p. And I'm also very careful about the track not clipping, I always keep it green. Could it be the interface, the mic or the software?
I would bet it’s the sm58. They’re not rest for recording vocals. They’re good as like an all rounder at a venue but for heavy vocals I’d say getting something like an SM7b would be the go because they can really handle the volume of screaming. I wonder if you could rent one and see how that works on your current system and go from there. I don’t know much about audacity. Are you running any plugins on it that may be causing the problem?
Thanks for replying! Yeah I was thinking about getting another mic too because I had read that the 58 isn't that good for home recording. Anyway, I'm not using any plugins
@@amygald ahh okay that makes sense. Yeah I'd say rent an SM7B and see if you like it. Its kind of the industry standard mic for heavy vocals. I use it 100% of the time
@@BrendonKPadjasek Pretty well, but normal singing is kinda weird with this setup, I can never seem to get the eq right and it's gotten to the point where I don't know if it's me, audacity, or my setup.
No problem! I love all of the free legacy plugins from UAD. SSL Legacy- Ln76 is a great starting point. Teletronix La-2a is also great as a finishing compressor. I personally bought the distressor plugin for screaming vocals and it’s my favourite. Don’t be afraid to compress more than you think. Attack and release should both be pretty quick for vocals but play around with it

Some random instrumental I wrote in another video and the vocals I unfortunately used chat gpt in a previous episode to see what it would come up with and then this is the outcome when I made the phrasing for it
@@albinp4927 ahhh I’m unfortunately not too familiar with it but if there’s a stock saturation plugin I would try throwing that on first in your chain and try adding the slightest bit of saturation to emulate what a hi end preamp would be doing
Not a professional here. I have a decent Shure dynamic microphone pop filter and have recorded music for years... But for the life of me I can never seem to get my vocals where I want them. Because of my inexperience, I always struggle to get clear vocals that sound silky smooth but without killing all of the highs so that everything comes through crisp and clear without shrieking with s's and sounding ear piercing. I cannot for the life of me get a decent mix that I'm happy with. Musically speaking I can always get my tracks to sound full and Rich... I don't know if it's just the kind of microphone I'm using or it's just that I don't know how to mix metal slash fry scream vocals well. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
My favourite trick is for that end of things is, soothe for general frequency near the end of my chain, cutting all the sibilance on the wave form and lowering just the hard sibilance “s, b, p, v, c, etc” type of sounds. That way your compression doesn’t hit those as hard. Also a de-esser at the beginning of your chain
@@BrendonKPadjasek yeah... Maybe it's just because I'm super picky with my vocals. Sometimes I'll even compare it to other metal albums and other professionally done mixes... I'm thinking, wow there's so much more clarity with mine... The bass is crushing this mix from Underoath (or whoever it is).... Or maybe it's because I have a higher pitched fry scream so I struggle to wrangle in the highs without losing clarity....not entirely sure.
That sounds like an amazing rig haha holy. It’s hard to tell without hearing what it sounds like. I personally would push the preamp quite a bit and not shape the neve only a bit. Usually I have to cut a bit around 600-1k on my vocals either the SM7b and then use all buttons in on the 1176 (pushing all the ratio buttons in) and try the attack around 2o’clock and the release around 3-4 o’clock and experiment from there. I’d also be hitting like 6-10 db gain reduction. Just listen to how it sounds as opposed to looking at the meter but I wouldn’t be afraid to slam it. Then use the la3a just to d a few db of compression to round it off.
What is your vocal recording rig?
I use a UAD Apollo interface so I’m able to monitor my vocal sound going into Ableton Live 11 without needing to commit to the sound

That’s awesome thanks for much for checking it out. How do you like the Kaotica Eyeball? Do you notice much of a difference ?
@BrendonKPadjasek I actually love the thing personally! I do have a small amount of treatment in my home studio, but the eyeball definitely gives me a dryer, more isolated vocal. Ya, it's a bit expensive, but it was worth it for me. Better then trying to diy somthing.
@stabzthegiant that’s really cool. Yeah there’s so much involved with sound treating a room that it’s much easier to go that route. Super cool I never heard of it until you mentioned it
This is going to be super helpful!
Thanks for checking it out! Same techniques I always use
Do you think a secondary mic would pick up anything useable for a vocal? Kind of how you use a room mic for drums.
Holy. A U87 for screaming eh? I’ve never had luck using them for distorted vocalists. How do you find it?
Great video man, really helpful 👍
Thank you! I’m always stoked when my videos help people
best tutorial for this.
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful

What would you Recommend for this setup?
Specifically with screaming vocals?
Which plugins do you have?
Our vocal rig isn’t much right now. It’s just the Focusrite 2i2 and a SM7b.
Also: using Presonus as the DAW.

If you’re comfortable with your DAW and you can do everything you want to easily in it, theres no reason to switch

awesome vid....super helpful 💪💪💪🙌
Thanks so much! always glad to help

@@BrendonKPadjasek awesome man I appreciate the quick feedback, ill definitely take use that advice, thanks again!
@Tyson_Guitars no worries!
@@BrendonKPadjasek do you think a lewitt pro LCT 240 would be a decent upgrade? Its more in my price range🥲
Is it audible over your vocals or only when it’s quiet, ie before and after a take? Thanks for checking it out, super glad it’s helpful!
Brendon, would you agree than an sm7b/cloud lifter would suffice for vocals in a metal mix. Or any better options you may suggest to have the best result going in to working a project.
Honestly I don’t even know if you need the cloud lifter now never use one. Just the SM7b for all of my heavy vocal work. Structures included
scarlet solo, sm58, dirt broke using anything i can get for free or for "free".

Thanks for this vid what would you recommend for a scarlet solo?
No problem at all! I have a Scarlett octo pre and I notice that it starts to saturate in an undesirable way when you push it so definitely stay in the green on the meter and occasionally hit yellow. It’s workable when it’s not being saturated and then mix it to taste later

I’m using a sm7b into a vp312 pre - neve 551 - 1176 - la3a
What would you recommend with this setup?
What would you do with an AT2020 going into an Arturia minifuse?
Definitely use a pop filter with the 2020 and if you can, tape or use elastic to place a pencil on the pop filter, right over the capsule of the mic. Those tend to get harsh plosives so if you place the pen ice or straw or something to split the air from hitting the capsule you’ll be in good shape. And make sure you’re not clipping as the pre amp likely doesn’t saturate well
no usas quantizacion para esas voces?
when there are double I'll manually edit them to start and stop at the same time so they're tight
Hey we are trying to record deathcore, we use a sure SMB7 and a Scarlett solo. What kind of pre amp should I look into getting?
What is your budget ?

@@BrendonKPadjasek thanks for the suggestions, bro 🙏 I'll try those things.
Interesting take. I can’t say I’ve had the same luck or know of anyone with the same luck but I’m glad to hear that works for you
@@BrendonKPadjasek yeah... Maybe it's just because I'm super picky with my vocals.
Sometimes I'll even compare it to other metal albums and other professionally done mixes... I'm thinking, wow there's so much more clarity with mine...
