Ok? But every football fan knows the offensive line is the most important position group in football. They get recognition for good play from QBs and RBs. I played CB and FS myself and even I can acknowledge the game doesnt work without linemen, and you cant win a single game without your oline doibg SOMETHING for you
Alex Charles I actually think Colin is right to an extent. With offensive players that aren't lineman, you can pull up like 40 individual stats that judge how good or efficient or whatever they are. For a defender, you have to take the word of a person you're arguing against that they're great in man or zone coverage and that they always fill the right gap in a running play or whatever, because you don't have statistics for successful a gaps closed.
Daniel Daw or you can watch them and see for yourself. If he covers a man to the point that the qb doesn't even throw on that side of the field, thats proof. Watch him fill the A gap. I can tell you that this guy is a great runner but until you watch him run you wouldn't know either.
It's harder to take notice because people love action. A great defensive player doing his job well will get very little action because he's stopping his man on every play. Like Ray said you have to take as a defensive player. If you want to be in the highlights you have to get diving interceptions of a ball that wasn't ment for you and run it in for 6. Or a fumble whatever. Even 3 and slot receivers have it easier for highlights because even they get chances at TDs
Ray Lewis is right on the money. In 2000, everybody knew that Ray was the best player in the NFL. He was Defensive Player of the Year, the leader of one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history, and led the Ravens to a 12-4 record despite having a mediocre-at-best offense. And yet he only got one MVP vote that year.
Ray Lewis as a GM- "Alright, the team is set." some assistant "But Ray, we have nobody on Offense. Everyone on the team is on Defense and Special Teams." "Yeah. didn't really like anyone on Offense."
shout out to offensive lineman. Ray is right on when it comes to offense vs defense. but at least defensive players get tackle highlights. the only thing offensive lineman get is yelled at for a single bad play in an entire game.
in my middle school team I'm a line man and when a runner gets a touch down they don't come to the line man and congratulate him they love on the runner even though he was untouched the entire run I wonder why certainly not the line men doing good who cares about them right
Lewis has a point, I played D Line very angry. That chip on defensive players' shoulders is real. If you sort of do your job there's nothing to congratulate you. Big hits, fumbles, sacks, loss of yards, you do need to TAKE it in order to get recongized
Think about William the refrigerator Perry. Defensive player. But all these years later, we talk about him, from maybe the best defense in the entire history of the sport, because of a few offensive highlights. The idea that hall of famers were on that team and the person people gravitated most on the national level for a period was Perry because he played FB or caught a pass is just exasperating.
Because the award isn't about team wins, it's about an individual player's value to his particular team. I argue that players that get hurt and then their once mighty teams take visible steps backward, like when JJ Watt goes down for the Texans or Derek Carr goes down for the Raiders, truly show their value and deserve the award than the popularity contest it has turned into.
Ray Lewis really should be a motivational speaker, just the way he talks and the passion he brings about subjects that matter to him really could motivate and inspire many people, not just young defensive players like myself, I learned football watching him, he really is motivational and influential. He deserves his spot in Canton.
I have the same beliefs about world football (soccer) it's all about what you do when you don't have the ball. I'm glad that this is an attitude that'll help me understand NFL football more. Defense Wins Championships in almost any sport.
i also play soccer and what you said is 1000% right. i tell my teamates all the time. what you do without the ball is the most important part of the game. wheter it's pressure, covering or being active and getting open.it's what makes you win. if you are walking around the field we are dead
Karl Sylvain I feel like it's worse than when I was younger. The media and most of the fans have 0 appreciation for defending. What they don't realise is most team are not elite until you have 2 great centre backs with great chemistry.
IMO, the best players in the league are on the defensive side of the ball, because the Offense has every single advantage & Defensive players still find a way to make plays & dominate. Von Miller, Luke Kuechely, Patrick Peterson, JJ Watt, Richard Sherman, Aaron Donald, Aqib Talib & guys like that are more impressive than the offensive players that have the rules slanted in their favor.
Defensive linemen have the advantage over o linemen. The only think o linemen have is when the ball is going to be snapped. But even then defensive line men are faster and quicker which is why o linemen focus on feet. The oline is restricted to putting their hands in about a 15in area. Defensive linemen have no such restrictions except for the face mask which applies to everyone any way.
You forgot my main man underrated Jaimie collins. He should be put on the same level categories as those guys. He's fluid on the defensive side of the ball.
I don't know about advantages. You play a team that you have scouting reports on that run the same scheme for as long as the Offensive coordinator has and vice versa. Offensive lineman are the most over looked position in the game. Why? Cause we block all day long. D linemen get the glory and fame with a big hit or tackle for loss like J.J watt. But have an o lineman stop J.J watt all game and you hear nothing. Cowboys o linemen are a great example. Ezekiel wouldn't be as dominant with out them. And I am a raiders fan by the way
For the record, there are two players who have been voted MVP as defensive players. Alan Page and Lawrence Taylor. Ray is right, though, defensive players don't get nearly enough recognition.
Why do you think Nick Saban’s teams Bellichick, Parcells, Dungy were so good. They are defensive minded coaches. They were DCs then became head coaches keeping defense as the main focus of the team in regards to drafts and schemes.
That defense was incredible. I believe he got mvp in 2000? And Ed Reed got mvp either the year before or year after only time thats ever happened. Back to back defensive mvp same team. Maybe even back to back same team im not sure. I'm a steelers fan too lol but that was a great time in football
The NFL has handicapped the defense everyway possible outside of just removing them from the field. I hate Tom Brady. He's not the best to ever play his position. He just benefited from all the rule changes ( The Tuck rule and hitting a QB below the knees ) and Bill Polian and the Colts crying because his receivers weren't good enough to get off the line ( Against the Patriots ). 300 yard passing games used to mean something. Dan Marino's 5000 yards passing in one season was a record that stood for over 30 years. Now Drew Brees not only broke his record but he has thrown for 5000 yards for numerous seasons. The game is watered down. There are way to many penalties. No more hard hits. Its a shame because people like myself who really love this game have seen what the league has done and are saddened by this.
100% agree. Defense has been hobbled. Hits allowed 10-15 years ago would have been fines + suspensions nowadays. People need to just understand it's a violent sport when you get to that level, no matter what injuries will happen.
I admit that I've enjoyed watching guys like Brees put on an offensive show, but lately watching high-powered offenses has gotten kinda boring. I've barely even cared enough to watch Raiders, Falcons, Packers, or Patriots highlights for the past few weeks. But even with the league being more offense friendly, defenses are somehow still thriving. S48 saw the Legion of Boom manhandle the Broncos supposed greatest offense in NFL history lead by Peyton Manning and S50 saw Cam Newton getting swarmed by the No Fly Zone. Probably goes to show that no matter how much the rules change to favor the offense more, defenses will still find a way to pull through
+Zac5Jacobs I look at like this. I played rec league , hs , and I was going to play football for Bowie so basically I've been around this game most of my life. No one forced me to play and I knew the consequences from playing this game. These are adults!!! Grown men and not children who have made a conscious decision to play football. No one is forcing them and they know the dangers of playing this game.

I feel like its not only harder to grade defensive players, but defense is also more of a unit and relies on all of its players, which makes it harder to pick one as the MVP of the whole league. Whilst on offense one player can carry the whole offense and do well, even if the rest of their offense is bad
He’s also acknowledged extreme respect for Eddie George because Eddie was the biggest baddest RB he ever played and he said himself that when he played that 6’4” 240lb cornfed Midwestern RB he had to really bring it or get ran over
Defense is a lot harder to play and a lot more pressure is on them. The defense also can’t afford to make mistakes unlike the offense. The offense can go 3 and out and it’s ok cuz our defense will get us back the ball. But if the defense makes a mistake and doesn’t do their job it’s a touchdown. The offense knows the play. The defense has to react to the play. Defense rarely gets glory and highlights. All the cool and spectacular plays are on offense-with a few exceptions of course. An expert at getting to the football and diagnosing plays as they happen, that kid is special. Many other positions are way too soft, and please can we cut it out with the CB discussion. There is a new great corner every year in this league apparently. Last year it was norman, year before it was butler, before that it was sherman, before that revis. CB's nowadays are so replaceable and once you start paying them big money, the other pieces start dropping off.
That’s the same in other sports too like soccer. In the history of the Balon Dor Award (equivalent to the MVP) there has only ever been 3 defensive players who won the award in the last 68 years. Even though there have been great teams based on defence.
Colin is really good. Hitting the a-gap can be the equivalent of threading the needle on a good pass. A good block shed can be the equivalent of a good juke. Defense just doesnt get its due.
Defensive players dont win MVP for a few reasons. They dont accrue stats the same way, which makes them harder to compare. They are judged as a unit more frequently. It is very difficult for an individual defensive player to take over a game like a quarterback or running back can.
He isnt wrong, the NFL literally has made up rules for bitch brady and soft receivers. Huge limitations on the way defenders can play the game these days
He's right about Dawson. From a LB's perspective, quality offensive linemen will either make you a much better player....or they will completely shut you down. There is no in between.
I don't think he should lump all offensive players in that group. Offensive lineman never get any love they are really in a worse spot than cornerbacks in a way.
Agreed. I thoroughly enjoyed the Rams v Patriots Superbowl. Everybody was talking about how bad the offences were. All I could see was brilliant defence. Sadly unrecognised by the pundits.
Imagine how the offensive line feels. They don't even get stats.
Ok? But every football fan knows the offensive line is the most important position group in football. They get recognition for good play from QBs and RBs. I played CB and FS myself and even I can acknowledge the game doesnt work without linemen, and you cant win a single game without your oline doibg SOMETHING for you
Zaddy oline and RB i think he's calling our wrs and te's
Yes they do. Pancakes, and times they allowed a QB to get sacked
They get Rolex watches from the RB when they have a good season.
But guess what they get paid millions of dollars to play in the NFL
"defensive players are only harder to rate if you don't pay attention to them."
Best quote of the clip.
Alex Charles I actually think Colin is right to an extent. With offensive players that aren't lineman, you can pull up like 40 individual stats that judge how good or efficient or whatever they are. He isnt wrong, the NFL literally has made up rules for bitch brady and soft receivers. Huge limitations on the way defenders can play the game these days
ray Lewis is my favorite football player
football master he's my favorite murderer
JJ Watt should be the MVP in the 2015
Yet again Ray nails it. My tackles in my first 3 years of college broke my team's record. Senior year, only play action screens came my way.
He's right about Dawson. From a LB's perspective, quality offensive linemen will either make you a much better player....or they will completely shut you down. There is no in between.
Real talk big Lewis
"Josh Norman is a better DB than odell is a receiver"???? Colin. Cmon man
"it all begins and ends on the offensive line" john madden
I don't think he should lump all offensive players in that group. Offensive lineman never get any love they are really in a worse spot than cornerbacks in a way.
Defense is like night shift never liked or noticed
I'm a offensive tackle and it is even worse for us than any defensive player
Agreed.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Rams v Patriots Superbowl.
Everybody was talking about how bad the offences were.
All I could see was brilliant defence. Sadly unrecognised by the pundits.
