Supplies:
Acrylic paint in dark brown, reddish brown, turquoise, white and copper/gold amzn.to/2sylQ56
Texture powder amzn.to/2FcmiJ0 (or sand texture for house paint: amzn.to/2FeNib6 or you can even use ground cinnamon)
Palette knife amzn.to/2BBQzRJ
Paint brushes amzn.to/2ERlqvO
Spray bottle with water
Think cardboard (like a cereal box)
Dies I used:
Tim Holtz Gadget gears amzn.to/2CvuvFo
Spellbinders gears amzn.to/2EDPPi0
*I also used an embossing folder but little of that showed after we did the effect. Use any embossing folder you have as the design really won't show
*Here is my faux pewter tutorial: • faux peweter jewelry
Directions for rust paste:
1. Mix grit in to dark brown (burnt umber) and reddish brown (burnt sienna) separately. You want a loose mud consistency.
2. Apply dark brown to your substrate (use embossed thin cardboard with layers of die cut cardboard for a nice texture) with a stiff brush working it into the nooks and crannies. You can stipple on the paint for extra texture. Let dry.
3. Dry brush copper or gold over the panel.
4. Use a palette knife to apply the reddish brown. You can stipple on some of the red brown color too.
5. Mix turquoise and white to make a pale aqua. Add water and apply to panel then spray with water so it will drip and look like patina.

I want your sponsors to know their sponsorship is working. I bought Lava soap just because you said it works. My husband remembers it from long ago and will be using it after working in cars.
Lindsay, your technique is so realistic looking even the up close shots look like rusted metal. Thanks for sharing such a great technique. I just about fell out of my chair laughing when you commented "I care enough to send you something that looks like it's been neglected in a junkyard for years, you're welcome." I think it was the "you're welcome" that did it. You're so cute and energetic and funny.
Hi Lindsay, I go to the local pool supplies store and I get the very fine bags of pool sand. It comes in white or in sand color. I use it for texture paints, textured grout, making my own colored sand for sand art, slime. One 25 lb bag is $7. I still have sand from 4 yrs ago.
Great tip! I definitely will get myself a bag of sand or go to my nearest beach and get some. I was thinking of the pet store too, the fish section, for pebbles, and so on.
great tip, thanks!
I liked this! I enjoy these card making projects. It seems like they don't take too long. And I work as a welder in a factory and these gears speak to me. Another great video, Lindsay
The timing on this video is perfect - making a steampunk box for my daughter. I knew I could do this at home with what I have but I forgot that I have sand for the texture. And the turquoise looked so bright when I practiced it other times ... just add water, white paint and spritz and it looks perfect. I feel so silly that I didn't think of that! Thank you so much for the tips !!! You know paints so much better than I do, of course. I guess I can use this on clay? I am certain that I need to bake first, then add the paints and bake again to set? Maybe? I want to make a porthole out of clay for another project.
Lindsay, you are so cute. I died laughing when you said, "I care enough to send you something that looks like it was neglected in a junkyard for years, you're welcome." Ha ha ha ha that's so funny. Personally, I wouldn't want anything that was or looked like it was neglected in a junkyard for years, but I still thoroughly enjoyed your video and what you made certainly DID look like it had been neglected in a junkyard for years. Well done!
Dori Agreed. Too funny. 😂
hahahaha:)

Made me laugh, too! I love worn out vintage items (real or faux!) so I especially loved this piece.
That's funny. I don't like anything that doesn't look like it's been drug thru mud, dented, and left in a barn, and forgotten for years. My mom says I'm crazy. She said she grew up with that look, she wants new! LOLOL!!!
Gotta say, what loved the most was how you didn't use the glue gun perfectly. Made this seem a lot more real/easy. I can never make my glue gun work without a lot of strings, and it always frustrates me when someone uses it perfectly precisely, seemingly without effort, like no, that's not how it works for most folks. Subbed!
You're always a ray of sunshine to me Lindsay....thank you....that was so cool!
I love that you are always looking for ways to save us crafters money!
Thanks for recycling old boxes. Also, I remember Lava soap! My dad worked on cars way back when and used it. Us kids thought is was so cool. Thanks for the memories and I loved your rusty project.
that soap is the best! It never fails to remove paint and ink stains from my hands!
Linda Smith I think I will buy a bar of Lava ....brings back memories.. I love these videos.Happy ART to YOU.
I really love your cheap product stuff! I usually adapt others to cheap versions as well as we sometimes do it with the kids and this one would be great as well! I'd love to see you use the panel in a card as well. Thank you so much for all the inspiration, I learn so much from you!
I love rust! Fun technique! My dad always used Lava. Now I know why. Thanks, Lindsay.
Now I have to make some rusty gears!! Love the tutorial. And you brought back a smell memory for me, Lava soap grew up on a farm and we always had that on hand and I loved the scent!
Yesssss love this video, it's good to see you helping us to do frugal crafting. Thank you
This is beautiful. I love the look of it! Thanks, Lindsay 😊
I LOVE how this turned out! Super cool. And yes, Lava soap is awesome. Especially for artists!
This is one of the nicest easiest aged rust techniques I have seen. Thank You!
aww, thanks!
Just loved that process, looks like so much fun and easy enough. TFS!
Very cool idea! I love the rusty, patina look!
LAVA! I haven't had that since I was a child! Must get.
Thank you for this technique, I been meaning to do a project but didn't know how to make it look rusted. So this really helps.
Oooo thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out how to get that rusted patina look. Also I use Lava soap as it gets my hands super clean after a heavy paint session. Love it!
Pretty cool the way that turned out, I love watching what you come up with
Awesome! And thanks for the tip on the paint additive! Just love your channel, and have for many years.
This is really cool! Getting a lot of ideas for my mixed media incorporating this into it! Thank you Lindsay!
I spent $30 on a rusting kit at a stamp show about 6 years ago! Worked great but I have tons of stuff that you used that I already had in my stash. Great demo!
thank you:)
Lindsay this is a great video . I love the look of rust & steampunk , so this is awesome for me. Thank you very much for sharing
Looks really great!!! I'm going to try this one for sure.
Thanks, lots. This is just what I was looking for. So many of the examples require so many specialized products. I have so much stuff that needs to be used around already that I don't want to buy things I don't need. This was perfect. I make journals and sell them online and this will help me make a dynamite journal.
Thanks, Lindsay...love it & you are full of energy & so entertaining. Tfs
Great project❤️..... Love your energy
This is just an awesome tutorial. I used this technique to make some steam punk boxes for my grandsons this Christmas. The boxes were to store Pokemon cards. Super big hit. Thanks so much!!!!!!!
awesome!
I too use the lava soap after I am inky and messy. It also cleans my brushs as well. Thanks for a great video as always.
Phenomenal technique - looks authentic!
That looks amazing! Another fab idea, thank you.
thanks!
Great card idea. I didn't know Lava soap would work so well + have conditioners in it. Thanks for the video. I learn so much from them.
thank you!
Great Video as per usual. Your a Legend. Keep on Truckin.
I love this! Looks so real. Would be cool on tags too. They have small bags of fine sand near fairy garden items or in floral sections. You make it look easy! Tfs
Love this! Thanks Lindsey for sharing xx
I love it!!!!!TY for showing us how to do this. I am going to try this.
You are so clever. I love watching you. Great idea for guy cards. Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas with us.
Amazing use of bits and pieces in the craft room, the good thing is that you are able to get complex ideas in a simple way across to your audience. Showing the talent of both the teacher and the artist\crafter. Thanks for sharing and regards to your family and friends .P.S. hoping you and yours are well. Regards Paul from London
Great video Lindsay! 😁 This looks really cool.
thanks Val!
Thank you for sharing . I sure am going to try this technique . Looks very cool. Makes a great masculine card. 😊
Thank you for sharing this technique, Lindsay! I also had to laugh at your comment about caring enough to send something that looks like it was neglected in a junk yard! I'm so glad you said that, because I really needed the giggle. I love how your final piece came out, and thanks for the tip about using the spray mister to do the patina step. It looked nothing like a recycled oatmeal box when you finished, that's for sure! :)
Thank you for this easy way to rust. I just bought the sizzix die the gears and was wanting to paint them to look old. 👍🏼
those are nice dies, so versatile. Have fun with the technique:)
Awesome card from an awesome lady!
This was fun ! Thanks Lindsay. 💞💫
I love it Lindsay! I will have to try it xxx
Another great video, Lindsay! Super that you offer alternatives and substitutes so your videos aren't infomercials for us penny-counters. Did faux pewter picture frames years ago (much fun), so looking forward to this grownup "let's get messy with a purpose". Yeah, and Lava soap is fine. Hmm, a lava experiment would be interesting. You can do it, kiddo.
this is a great diy keep it up !
Hard to believe that is paper. Love it!
thank you!
Awesome , love that look, tfs
Love love love it, new subscriber from Canada 🇨🇦
Bienvenue!
Love lava soap and it was a great tip about the cinnamon this would be great to try at Christmas time with Christmas cards smelling like cinnamon
Super fun video! I gotta try this!
This came out great! Thank you for sharing the technique, it is so realistic, it actually looks like it should be super heavy and 2ill require tons of extra postage on that card, lol! 💜💜💜
As usual, great ideas, and video.
Loved it!
What a cool idea! Thx Lindsay 😉
Really cool!
Really cool process!☺👍☺
Lindsay love, love your video tutorials. I love what you have demonstrated to us crafters today it is a bit of fun but also a great piece to put on a male card (they are always so difficult to craft for). I think that they may appreciate a bit of old rusty metal LOL ! :O)
Cool effect. I'm off to the beach to get some sand!!!
Thank you for sharing this! I bought some of the texture powder at HL as well, but didn’t have a clue as to how to use it! Lol Now, I know! 🙂
I enjoyed watching the process and think I'll stick to using the texture powder for starts. Paint grit is a great idea but I would hope that it comes in relatively small containers. Thanks again Lindsay.
Love it!! Great video
Thank you!!
Very cool technique
I love your energy, always so inspiring! But uhm... it is almost midnight here in Sweden, should be going to bed :)
Hahaha:) Art or bed, tough decision:)
Brilliant Lindsey, going to do that in a mixes media painting so cool. Yes more cheap diys please. Wish you could make a cheap diy craft spinner sort of like the black one on your desk. Can't get them in England, they would sell so well too.
This is so cool. Thank you.
Loved it! Thanks.
I’ve got to save up for your “tree” stamps! Love them!
aww, thank you:)
I think bird cage sand would work well as it's quite fine and I like the smell of that, too. You'd just have to sand out the bigger chalk pieces.
this is soooo cool. Thanks for sharing.
That looks so cool. I just have no idea what I would *do* with it.
so cool!
Daler and Rowney used to sell marble powder for texturising acrylic and would be great for this. Mixed with a white heavy body it made a good cheap texture paste.
good idea! I would think marble would be expensive but dust must me leftovers that are unwanted for other applications I guess. I have never used that.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich It’s not even marble - it’s usually calcium carbonate waste tbh. Sold as “limestone flour” for folk who have horses.
Tfs, Lindsay!👍🏾
This is great!! Thanks so much!!
I love your mind. Thanks for sharing.
Been using that stuff since childhood and I'm old!
it's a classic!
Great stuff! It's reminiscent of the rusty porthole you demo'd a little while ago. It might be great to add some of this technique to that painting, perhaps even using the acrylic gel medium with sand I have on hand. Thanks! (I know this is an old post, but what better time than now).
Loved this! Thank you Lindsey! Hugs, Kathy
Love this ❤
Nice tips...ty Lindsay :)
Great technique
Nice technique. 😀 I actually just went through a bunch of your diy art supply videos today. I made the coolest pastel purple ink pad with glycerin, alcohol and several drops of ph martin's hydrus wc. And I made a bottle of pink shimmer spray. I have to buy some gum arabic because I have got to make shimmer watercolor paint. Thanks for all the great videos!!! 💖
thanks!
Hi from Australia Love your idea 💡
I use sand when I can to mix with paint 🙂
Very cool! TFS
thanks for the video, you are so fun to watch. I don't think I want to put a rust texture or look on anything, even for a man, but interesting. Had to watch. TFS
great idea
I love the look of it so realistic ! Thank you. By the way Lindsay unless you have changed your camera,I think we have the same A Samsung, and I would like to know what are your settings, light, autofocus or not ..... because your videos look so good but mine blurry. Thank you in advanced for your help.
yes, I am still using the same one. The key is lots of light and custom white balance. Using the menu button scroll over the "WB" then scroll down to Custom WB and then zoom in on a white piece of paper and hit the menu button to set the white balance. It is a game changer! I us auto white balance when I am talking facing the camera but custom for any tutorial portions. I still love this camera, in fact I bought a second one used on ebay as a back up!
I bought mine according to yours after one your videos wayyyy back than !! like 3 or 4 years ago and love it for the price. In fact I'm ok now with the light but my problem is more about the blurriness What are your settings bout the autofocus and are you in mode still or sport and do you have the "flower" icon or infinity. I am lost in these settings. Thank you
Sponsored by Lava soap. That’s hilarious. Work it lady.
I am happy they are a sponsor, I have used their soap for years and it is wonderful for crafty hands:)
Excellent x
Great video. TFS
I forgot about Lava Soap! I will get some!
Samantha Van Pelt Me too. I can't believe I forgot about it. Perfect for messy art and craft hands!
It is wonderful stuff and one bar lasts for ages!
My dad got some non-skid additive at the hardware store and it was ground walnut shells.
Super inspiring.....
Hi, once it is all done, is this something you frame ? What do you do with these once you have completed the work ? Can you use this as a cover of a note pad ?
