Save your rusty oxidizing liquid. You can 'stain' wood with it and turn it various shades of grey, weathered look (always test your wood first in a small area because different woods react differently, ie lighter grey versus nearly black). It will darken in the grey shades as it dries.
best way to do that is if to use a glass jar, i used pasta jars.....put however much vinegar you want in the jar and a piece of steel wool. let that sit for a few days to a week then use that liquid to fake age your wood. works really good!!!
Love the video!! Thank you for the tutorial! I have rusted the bigger dollar tree bells but I found that they rust easier if you take the top finish off first. I do that usually by putting the bells in our campfire when camping and the heat from the fire takes the bells down to their original metal. I have also used. A small torch lighter also but it takes longer. Just a thought I would share.

I finally tried the rusting method with small bells and safety pins before I saw the video. I remembered your directions in another video and ventured into it on my own. Since seeing this video I now have the exact measurements. They’ve been in the solution for two days and still need more time. I hope they come out as good as yours. I love all these little tricks for crafts. They make a lot of difference in the outcome of artistic projects. Thanks.

Can you use a tissue to wipe off the the powdery rust? Or will that take off all the rust color too? If it's powdery won't the powder stain your craft project? And how do you glue the powdery bell onto craft? Won't, bell fall off if it's powdery?
So I’ve been trying to rust a spoon. It’s stainless steel, so I learned (the hard way) I had to get creative 😂 I’ve been playing around with soap as a way of getting bubbles. I drop some iron into the mix and rust comes off and gets in the bubbles. Then I rub the bubbles onto the spoon. It gives a really cool crusty look
Have you tried spraying the rusted items with a matte finish varnish or clear coat of some sort to keep the rust from coming off ? Do you think that would help?

Hey Cheryl! I have found the best metals that work quickly for rusting are Dollar Tree metals. I have used other metals, like bells and safety pins from Walmart, but they take longer to rust. I think the Dollar Tree metals are lesser quality and don’t have the outer layer, so to speak, that other metals have...if you know what I mean...so they rust lickety split! I get the silver wire in the automotive part of Dollar Tree. And then the safety pins in their craft section, or a lot of times up by the cashier. They come in a little plastic container. And then just the normal silver bells you can find at Christmas time. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Warning...once you start rusting, it’s addictive! 😉 TFW! 😀

You said you let bells stay in liquid til the bells have a powdery surface. Doesn't that powder stain your craft & get all over your hands & work surface? Does it smell after you remove bells from mixture? You said the vinegar was smelly.
The rust can get on things yes, but you can wipe it off. It won’t take the rust look off of the objects! I don’t know if I’ve smelled the vinegar smell once they have been taken out. Hope this helps! 😀

I used 20volume, but, unfortunately it didn’t work, but, I’m sure it’s the metal and not the mixture. I’ve used this mixture before and had no issues with it. Thanks for the video and reply, as I said, I had used the mixture before, but for the life of me I could not remember if there was bleach in there too, thankfully, I didn’t add the bleach.

It’s oxidation, rust isn’t dangerous. Sharp metal is get your tetanus shot, but this isn’t harmful. I love it.
