Congrats on the realistic, down to earth review. You don't get to hear the negatives of new cars here in Greece when you watch the Greek "journalists" on RUclips. It's as if I'm watching a promo video, not a review. Hope you will continue in the same manner, this is what ordinary people need before they invest a significant amount of money on a new car..
Always good to see your reviews. Just bought an Octavia -18 modell with 1.8 L petrol. Love the car. I fully agree on the reservations you have not having knops to turn for your climate control. It is also safer I belive keeping the old school knobs.
Two things. 1 - If a climate control system works properly you shouldn't actually have to keep changing its settings. Other than rapid demist I find I rarely need to touch any of the knobs on my 2018 Octavia. 2 - The advantage of the iPad style touchscreens over embedded touchscreens is that you can put your fingers around the periphery and use your thumb to touch the icon. This is far easier and more accurate than using an extended digit. Try it sometime. After all, you use your thumbs to operate all of the buttons on the steering wheel so it is actually more natural to do this than you'd think.
There is nothing I appreciate more than a good shut line. A very different looking beast to the Octavia of recent years. Nice to see the return of some chrome to the grille treatment, always gives a bit of class and quality to a cars look. Don’t know what to make of the radio/sat nav display as a separate unit perched on the dash ? I suspect that will go back into its ‘proper’ place on future editions.
I got rid of my golf8 because I found the screen both annoying and dangerous. I swapped it for the car I wanted in the first place, the Octavia. Yes there are some touch bits on the screen but nothing like the Golf -- lane assist on the golf you have to go into the assist systems touch a certain part of the screen and then close it down -- on the Octavia I could do the whole thing with 2 touches on the steering wheel !!. love being back in another Octavia after the disappointing golf.
Great review which confirmed my impressions of the new Octavia. I'm one of those put off by the touchscreen-only infotainment/aircon control system. Having a Mazda with its (BMW-like) click-stop IT navigation wheel, and independent knobs for climate controls, I don't want to use a touchscreen when driving (which apart from being inconvenient is a safety hazard). I suppose that the VW Group is trying to reduce production costs following its dieselgate compensation payouts, but many a Skoda customer will be deterred by this simple design mistake.
We have a 2020 Facelift Superb It has manual climate controls but there is no clickwheel/iDrive it is touchscreen and it actually, in my opinion, is safer as it takes less time because we had a Mazda 6 rental, lovely car but that clickwheel for me just is too finicky Maybe thats just me being too used to touchscreens
By the way Bob, that spare wheel/tyre @2:15 in the boot isn't quite a "full size". It's still only a "Temporary" one. The only thing matching with the four fitted wheels is the approximate radius across the outside of the tyre. Otherwise all the parameters are different. Eg 16" wheel versus 17" or 18" fitted on the car. 60% tyre height versus 45 or 50 on car. 205 tyre width versus probably 225 or so on car etc...
Having this actual model now for 2 weeks in Belgium. Had to configure it online and didn't had a test-drive due to the pandemic. Initially I was hesitant for the temperature control but after 2 weeks this is getting a non issue. It's quite convenient actually. I think the seat heating is more clumsy to adjust. Indeed, the vents are a bit too low. It's a failure to see Skoda hasn't changed the home and menu button to the right for right hand driven cars. Not good! I opted for the slightly lower and stiffer sport suspension and 18 inch wheels and actually really like the ride quality. Not super spongy but certainly not firm. Nice review Bob, as always!
Had a Superb Combi but it was stolen and never recovered. Was thinking about getting another Superb but may well go for an Octavia now. Great review and I’m leaning towards a high spec version now rather than a Superb.
I have a Škoda Karoq 1.5Tsi Dsg.. wow what a motor.. these Škidas now are just as good or better than VW.. this Octavia is a beautiful motor.. Cheers Bob great video . Keep em going mate.. 👍👍
That’s the problem, their price is almost matching VW now... I guess if there’s less and less difference between Seat Skoda and VW then it costs less to produce them all...
I sold my 2017 Octavia estate a few months back and just waiting on a Kodiaq to arrive. The Octavia was a really fantastic car, very hard to criticise anything. The new Octavia certainly looks better but I'd have a few criticisms about the lack of buttons. What I can't understand, and Skoda seem to be unique with this, is the load bay. My car, an SE-L, came with a variable height floor as standard and it was so good, you could hide tonnes of stuff under that floor that you couldn't in most other cars. Even somthing as big as an E-Class couldn't carry the amount of gear I could in my Octavia. And you'd still have that spare wheel, something an E Class didn't have. The variable floor is an option here in the UK, not sure about Ireland, but it really needs to be standard equipment - it's certainly not clever for them to exclude it. Good honest review by the way.
You will love the Kodiaq, I think that SEL Kodiaqor “Style” as we call it, is really the best Skoda has ever done. Massive space, low running costs, good spec, great residuals and lots of buttons!
Smashing car, bought the new model Superb this past spring as couldn't get the VRS Octavia in manual. Might go back to Octavia when the upgrade is due though!!
Bob are you doing the 2020 Grandland X , a week or so ago i thought you were doing one on it but i have yet to find or see it any update ? and yes i have the bell icon so i get some but not all notification's :/
Dear Bob, which car do you recommend between the new octavia combi 1.5 tsi and a toyota corrola sports touring sports hybrid 1.8 ? They have similar prices and I realize that the octavia is more digitized and has a large trunk ,but the corrola is hybrid and eco friendly and the consumption is 4,5-5 % in congested trafic.I I want to buy one of them for a family of 3 people, but I can't decide.I need your opinion as a professional.Thank you very much.
Hi Bob, enjoyed this review, but some more technical information would I am sure, avoid buyers buying the wrong model. I will be retiring shortly and set my heart on a 2 litre Octavia Estate. We will use it for towing, so need a decent amount of power. Never trusted the DSG gearbox, so wanted a manual. Fine, but this only produces 116 bhp!, this is the kind of information many viewers will appreciate. Also a quick question have VW/Skoda sorted out the cold running on the TSI 1.5 engine, which had a habit of hesitancy when cold? Keep the videos coming!
A great review Bob. I always appreciate your practical advice and honesty. It's a beautiful car but I agree with your assessment of the stand-out screen, absence of knobs for a/c and the low centre airvents. I can't understand the behaviour of the DSG jumping down to 1st gear. That must be a fault that can be rectified. You said the car you reviewed has all the bells and whistles at €40k but I notice it does not have heated rear seats. I presume it has the front seats heated. Also, no sports mode. Do you know will there be a Scout 4x4 version available ? Again, I congratulate you on an excellent review.

So I went with the Lean ST fr 200 TSI DSG . (What a name) Basically the same car but the leon estate has better lights. 2 years in and no complaints at all. It's a little thirsty maybe.
Another fantastic Bob Flavin review. Thanks! Skoda have lost the plot here. No handbrake, no dials, infotainment screen and an electric tailgate? Too complex by far. The Octavia is best in MK1 form.
Hi Bob, great review , are there any variants of the new octavia fitted with multi link rear suspensions ? Or are all fitted with the cheaper torsion rear bar, which gives a softer bouncer ride over bad roads/speed ramps ?
Ordered mine yesterday Bob. When I made enquiries about the headlights it seems that LED lights are standard but not the one's on the vehicle you're driving. Those are the matrix LED and are a €1300 plus extra. I like having a good light when night driving but not at that price. At least with the older model I was able to upgrade the bulbs for better one's for an improved spread of light. Otherwise I'm looking forward to picking it up at the beginning of the year.

Great car but that screen position and the infotainment system are a let down, hoped they'd have improved it but it's worse if anything. Kia do it so much better. That's from experience as a current Kia and Skoda owner.
That colour and alloys are the best combo for the Octavia. Still one of the best all round cars on the market IMO.

Not a great fan of the electric handbrake I prefer the manual one which I have in my mrk 3 octavia. Also the rear windscreen wiper is an option we’re it should be fitted as standard in a wet country like England
Just thinking, Skoda didn’t fall out with you after the Scala ha
Looks very much like a Ford Mondeo Mark 5 from side and front.
I like your reviews very much mr Flavin, but pushing adverts on the viewer the way you did in this vid.... I don’t agree with that. I pay youtube premium membership to get uninterrupted content.... not impressed.
snore off you turd
Bob you didn't even mention anything about the engine! I don't even know if it was a petrol or diesel!
All new cars made by VW are way too expensive, these PCP deals are a ticking time bomb.
Great car but that screen position and the infotainment system are a let down, hoped they'd have improved it but it's worse if anything. Kia do it so much better. That's from experience as a current Kia and Skoda owner.
Uhhh an umbrella??? oh wow. oh wait. in my tiguan and golf it has room inside the car. clever.
I love to freeze to death in my skoda oktavia style 1.5 litre.
Skodas aren't the cars they use to be they got soo much problems nowadays
Haha - gotta laugh when the car infotainment system makes a lier out of you - damn bugs 😡
bad design from Schoda bobby boy, no KNOBS, for the heating................NO KNOBS , NO GOOD ............
