  • Welcome to Shiogama home to a CRAZY auction for Japan's most coveted ingredient : TUNA!!
Book your own Japanese Food Experience with By Food : www.byfood.com/experiences/se...
Today I'm taking you inside the auction to get a closer look at this beloved fish. Before heading over to the Shiogama Wholesales Fishery Market where you can sample fresh, never frozen tuna like you've never had before!
Shiogama is located just a short train ride from Sendai city which is also known for a lesser popular cut of meat : beef tongue!! Gyutan or grilled beef tongue usually using USDA beef is a speciality of Sendai City. In the typical Japanese fashion Gyutan is grilled to perfection, making it taste on par with other premium cuts of beef. Gyutan is NOT to be missed in Sendai.

I grew up buying pickled tongue at the butcher and grocery store, boiled for 2 hours, then sliced. Also, the Jewish delis always had tongue sandwich on the menu. Delicious.

To do justice to the Gyū Tan/beef tongue, pairing it with Kimoto or Yamahai Sakè (sah keh) would be a match made in heaven. Japanese Sakè and Japanese cuisine have evolved together for thousands of years.

This same Tuna auction happening in the US would end in fighting, property damage, claims that the white man got the best Tuna and all the usual nonsense. Notice how in spite of the chaotic auction, the Japanese people are still humble, respectful and non violent. Its nice to witness.

I think Sendai is nice place!! It is a good video!!
I am a Japanese, If you come to Japan, I recommend strongly to buy SUICA card at the first station. (500 yen for deposit.)
JR SUICA Card is a prepaid transportation card of JR By recharging the card, you can get on and off the train very smoothly.
SUICA is available in the Kanto area, but is compatible with transportation cards for other areas of the JR group.
SUICA can be used with PASMO in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Kitaca of JR Hokkaido, manaca of Meitetsu and Nagoya City Transportation Bureau, TOICA of JR Tokai, PiTaPa of Surutto KANSAI Council member stations, ICOCA of JR West, SUGOCA of JR Kyushu, nimoca of Nishitetsu and others, Hayakaken of Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau, etc. The cards can also be used with the Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau's Hayakaken.
Other electronic money can also be used at convenience stores and some vending machines.
It is very convenient to recharge one card.

What with Sendai and Shiogama being so close (only around 50 miles) from Fukushima, I wonder if there are any tests run on the fish caught around the area? Should one be concerned at all? After all, we are told that the fallout can last for hundreds of years yet?
